I dont think he means it in ways of development. The two games were competing for the same playerbase. If D3 had been good POE would have had no or significantly less players and probably would have died early on or again would not have gotten as big as it is. Its not about the creation of POE ist about its success. D3 gave a large boost at the time to POE because even back then people were saying "hey here is this better game you can play for free" and it gave huge amounts of publicity to them.

The development was started before D3 came out yes. But if D3 had been good in the same way as D2 it's doubtful POE would have survived this long.

@@Turmio1 D3 was programmed from the bottom up to be a 4 player game, Multiplayer was the focus, Which resulted in 15 million people playing season 11 For context the most players that a solo player programmed ARPG has ever got is 3.5 million POE 1 The actual mistake Blizzard made was going backwards to make a solo player ARPG which they massively failed at , trying to rehash D2 as an inspiration If they had just reskinned D3 took the GR back to impossible to complete and added a few more bits There would be 15 million playing every season again So D3 is bad solo player game, but it kills every other ARPG out there when it comes to 4 players on the screen at the same time and having meaningful play and I mean destroys the opposition nothing even comes close when 4 players are playing together
@XirpzyАй бұрын
Eh. Most D3 players switched to poe over time, but for a while they both had pros and cons. Major con of poe was the horrendous performance, worse graphical fidelity and smoothness of gameplay. Many stayed on D3 at the start despite poe being a better game at its core. Years later poe was in a much better state. Maybe I remember wrong but as someone who jumped on poe very early, the playerbase definitly seemed split at first and many played both games.
@prinegonbevaris1788Ай бұрын
@@Turmio1 When D3 came out, POE was still only 2 acts long and quite rough to play. It would still be 8 months until the 3rd act released and about a year for the 1.0 version (with the 4th act). The next big release was the D3 expansion Reaper of souls, that was percieved well. So it is not so much that D3 being bad was much of a help for POE. But the big difference was, that while D3 released and did pretty much nothing, you could POE evolving and growing constantly. There was a stream of patches rebalancing the game, adding new content and skills to it, there were developers actually in contact with the comunity, there were seasons and races and things happening, while D3 was released, the difficulty was nerved and the real money auctionhouse was closed, and that was pretty much it. The contrast of care for the product could not have been more apparent.

Yeah, the confusing part is that there are going to be videos of him upset with PoE too. These are mainly a result of the fact that he wants to figure it out on his own, and goes into each league trying to cook his own build. It often turns out as you might expect, with it not working as he had hoped, him getting frustrated until he has a meltdown. In those moments, he can have harsh things to say about PoE, but then once he's cooled down, he is usually gets back to loving PoE. But if you don't watch him regularly and just catch a vod of him melting down and saying how much he hates Necropolis, you might think he's no longer in to PoE. They act like they did it...they are just using the brand and selling sub-par product. Grinding Gear is carrying the torch and creating a well thought out and fleshed out game that pays respectable homage. They did it once with PoE upstaging D3 and they are going to do it again. Designers David Brevik, Erich and Max Schaefer made incredible games with Diablo 1 and 2...I don't see passion and creativity at Blizzard like that anymore other than the art and cinematic teams. Even Matt Uelmen's music in the first two diablos is iconic and ahead of it's time. Feels funny to see these people that had no part in building that trying to coin "Diablo like" terms. Grinding Gear is making a game for gamers by gamers. Blizzard is making a product with one narrow focus in mind. You just know the guys at GGG are sitting back and enjoying everything coming from that tweet.
@Illusive1313Ай бұрын
The actual funny thing about the whole tweet crap is that GGG congratulated Blizzard for the D4 release and were excited to see what the future has in store. It's not GGG's fault that Blizzard brought literally nothing to the table, but a butthurt tweet by Rod.

The First ARPG I played was D3. I was hooked. After Tons of Hours, I started played POE in the early access. Years later the first time I ever played D2 was in the remaster. When I played D2 I realized what a Good ARPG needs to be like. That made me to start hating every other Diablo game excluding D2. POE had the success recipe that D2 had.

I hope D4 focuses on its end game more because of this.
@emptynight4861Ай бұрын
No dude. Just no. They've had years to hear that message, if they were interested in learning it wouldve happened. They want to feed slop to people who will pay for slop, thats what they are.
@mrlacksoriginality4877Ай бұрын
@@emptynight4861 Still though, D4 needs to be the "baby's first ARPG" for the most part. If Blizzard can learn even basic things like how to do drops better and have a better end game, it will result in more ARPG players and that will lead to more POE players in the long run. I just want this genre to have the respect it deserves.
@emptynight4861Ай бұрын
@@mrlacksoriginality4877 I hear you, I agree it would be better for the world if D4 did get better, but the amount of people putting their hope into that happening while locking themselves into the sunk cost fallacy of being d4 players is just tragic. We can all go back to d4 if/when they get their shit together, but no need get people to try to bear with it when blizz hasn't shown any indication of change.

As business developer it is easy to say ; If someone is paying 30$ to start a game in Early Access and others not bothering even paying you 40-50$ for your full game you gotta think about it. POE2 rocks!

I'm sure I'm gonna get toasted by the comments, but I don't think Diablo 4 is a shit game at all. It just ticks virtually zero of the boxes that Diablo 2 fans are looking for. It's a great casual game if you want to get a full build together in a couple days, kill some monsters and be done with it. The problem is, generally ARPG fans want to have meaningful character progression that is essentially endless, so they can keep powering up as long as they want to devote time to doing so. Diablo 3 was the exact same sort of idea... fun to play on a new season launch, get a build together in a day or two, blast for a few hours and then it's over. It's still mind blowing to me how after TWO "brand-new" Diablo games, they still haven't been able to come up with an endgame that's as fulfilling as clearing the same campaign zones over and over in Diablo 2 was. PoE fills that void and expands upon it beyond our wildest dreams. Can't wait to play.

Looks like the only option for D4 to keep a hint of relevance after PoE2 launches is to go free to play. And bring Diablo back to the game in the next expansion. But if it was up to me, I'd be considering starting to develop D5, but as a completely different game... Maybe the souls-like one that was canned before D3 was released.

I personally love how Path of Exile 2 is looking and I will definitely try it, but the lack of damage numbers really puts me off. There's no real way to understand how your power increases when you level up and improve your skills. If there were a toggle option to display/don't show damage numbers like in Diablo, I'd prefer playing this over it 200%.

in all seriousness, i firmly believe that the D4 devs WANTED to make something more akin to PoE/PoE2, but...the powers that be swatted that shit down since it wouldn't be as "monetizable". so, they either stick with it and keep their job, or just quit their job. and most people can't just quit their jobs on a whim. blizzard aren't making the same type of game GGG is making. blizzard are making a platform that is first and foremost their to get the broadest appeal possible. GGG are making a product for (mostly) the blasters and higher-end arpg players. both companies want money, but two very different ways of getting it.
