The original PO49 is indeed a marvellous colour as seen here. I have the White Nights Indian gold and use it for painting tigers. Thank you for mixing PY129 and PR122. I really liked the fourth and fifth mixes from the left, specially the fourth one. I mixed a somewhat similar hue with PY150 and PR187 which is somewhat less glowing.

The hues never cut it for me. They're beautiful on their own, but my use for po49 was always in mixing, and the hues really do not mix the same way due to the azo yellow. I always used it to mix a very particular middle earth tone back when it was just being discontinued, and was so confused why a new tube was just not mixing the way I remembered until I discovered it was a hue ): Your genuine version looks like the "deep" version of the pigment-- Dan Smith carried that, too, as a single pigment po49, but it was a redder tone and had less perceived glow than the one without the deep demarcation. I have a similar version of the pigment that I assume may be the same source as the one here, and was manufactured by Dupont in the 70s!

I'm honestly really happy that I only started painting with watercolours when PO49 was running out. It's definitely something I'd love and miss if I had gotten used to having it around; it's right up my alley. But since I never had it, I don't miss it. I like the WN Indian gold and W&N Quin Gold (Hue) really well, and I like mixing PY129 and DD PV32, but it is clear to me from videos that I would find them lacking in mixes if I had used PO49 first. Thank you; this was lovely!

I love the original PO49. But with PO48 being discontinued I stocked up on the M Graham and Holbein versions so I wouldn't run out. I got 2 tubes of M Graham and 2 tubes of Holbein with the base of PO48. There's some colors that I just can't do without on my palette. Anthraquinone Scarlet I got like 5 tubes of, Anthraquinone Blue (The old version) I stocked up on too. I'm not some hoarder, but I just don't want to do without in my range. When I eventually run out of PO48 based Quin Gold will be a sad day, but at least I can mix it. Color mixing is fun and weird.

Great video! I came back to watercolor after PO49 was long gone. I have used various hues and I have a PO 49 from Dan Barrett. I guess it's not quite the same as the old DS color. I totally missed the PY129 and PR122 mix in Jay's video. That makes sense. It's a very yellow green and a very purple red, so they are near compliments.

I returned to watercoloring after a gap of 25 to 30 years. The number of brands and pigments were a complete surprise to me. I discovered quin gold after the pigment was discontinued. So I bought the DS quin gold hue and honestly I don’t have any use for it… yet!!! I bought it because some artists on YT mentioned it and in hindsight I think that probably wasn’t the best reason to buy it LOL. I thought I would use it to makes various mixes. Well I’m still trying to figure out how to use it. 🥴

I started with Daniel Smith's original PO49 and fell in love so when I heard the pigment was running out I went around to my local art stores and picked up 4 tubes so I luckily have not run out yet lol. Daniel Smith's PO49 is actually pretty close to the DS Quinn. gold hue (if maybe a little deeper in tonne) but without the vivd yellow undertone that happens with PY150. It's interesting how different Nightshades vrs is. Thanks for sharing your results.

I really like the holbein one which is nice since i don’t have to pay too much for the color, its funny since holbein doesn’t have the single pigment version of PO48 or PY150, oh that mix of PY129 and PR122 especially the redder hues are so pretty i might invest in both but i’m not at the time for buying more paint then what I already have. I actually got a dot sample of quin gold by daniel smith and when i painted it its much browner than the holbein one, i think i actually got a genuine sample of PO49 the color when diluted doesn’t have a glow like a PY150 would its very earthy yellow, probably this is why so many people love the original quin gold ?

I love PO49, especially for making luminous greens, and I still have two tubes each of DS Quin Gold and of DS Quin Gold Deep. I like the new DS Quin Gold Deep hue, because the PY150 doesn't get as neon yellow as other Quin Gold hues I've tried. That's the problem with switching to a hue for me, the PY150 (a pigment I love in other cases) keeps the hues from performing the same way as PO49 and from looking as natural. But I'm sure I could adjust when I finally use up my stash, and will try to make my own mixes. However, I plan to stock up on PO48 and PR206 before they go, as they're both very useful pigments like PO49. A note about the handmade versions of PO49 that I've seen--I think they use the Guerra Paints pigment which is a little different than the DS version, they seem browner in mass tone, but the undertone seems similar to DS PO49. But I'm mostly basing this on KZbin videos, haven't seen them in person, so hard to know for sure.

I got into watercolor after po49 went off the market, however, I was gifted a bunch of older daniel smith paints about 3 months in. In there was a tube of quin gold po49 as well as sap green original po49 and pg7. Both are gorgeous. For me none of the hues are quite the same but I tend to like po48 versions better than other mixes. Now with po48 going off market I am starting to worry that burnt orange shade won'tbe easily replaced either, for me it is the only orange on my palette and irreplaceable. PO49 mixes quite differently than mixes with py150... impo.

Hi there! Almost all of the mixes that are marketed as a replacement for the original PO49 pigment are wrong. PO49 was an orange and as such had a more orange -ish undertone and not a bright yellow one that in the hue mixes is made by the PY150 mid but very bright yellow. You can see better this if you remake the gradient swatches in wet on wet manner. Prewet your paper and then apply the colour in order to have a more even spread of the tints. The closest match to the original PO49 pigment that I managed to mix by other colours was a mix 2:1 of PR101 ( transparent red oxide or W&N B. Sienna that is the same) with Azo Yellow PY129 and that because PY129 is not so bright as the PY150, it is more muted with a slightly greenish undertone ( blue+ yellow in other words) that mutes the orange -ish PR101 and brings it closer to the hue of the PO49. PY150 is the most irrelevant pigment that those who made the Q. Gold replacement hue could ever use. It is completely irrelevant. I don't even know how they came up with the idea to use it in the first place.

I think the mix of PR122 and PY129 has the rights to call itself as Quin Gold as they are Quinacridone Magenta and Green Gold. The only reason White Nights doesn't label the paint as Quin Gold is because it doesn't contain Quinacridone at all. If I remember correctly, Winsor Newton also plan to rename their Quin Gold due to pigment change caused by discontinuity of PR206.

@PaintinHiding

ahh yes. i don't believe it's the way they're ground up. it's just the property of Quinacridone paints. Quins as well as Phthalos (PB15, PB16, PG7, PG36, etc) are naturally higher-tinting when compared to other pigments. Viridian PG18 is an example of a pigment that is low-tinting. No matter how much to scrub the paint, it'll feel like there's hardly any pigment at all.

It's about quantity, any paint manufacturer that sells to major retailers needs to buy a large quantity--and current price might be an issue too. The big chemical companies that made this synthetic pigment are no longer making it. Guerra Paints still sells the PO49 pigment for paint makers, I'm not sure if it's because they bought a stash before it was discontinued, or if they have a way of making it on a small scale. Would love someone who knows about the chemical makeup and process for making PO49 to chime in :)

You either have a color shift in the video or I would describe the diluted Nightshade PO49 as a peach, so a pastel orange. But then I'm from Germany and Germans tend to have orange shades range further into yellow than English native speaker and less into red, where we would classify a color as red, I hear native English speaker still talk of an orange value. So it just may be a cultural difference. :)

Hello great video!The thing that you've gotten wrong(please forgive me for saying that)and not only you, but everyone else who has used this version of PO49 that you have, is that it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the PO49 that Daniel Smith used to have.What ''Handprint'' has mentioned for the mix of PY129 and PR122 is that it creates a similar hue to the D.S's version and not to the one you (and everyone else,handmade brand or not) has!I am really sorry to say, that neither the hue nor the mixing properties of this PO49 come even close to the D.S.'s version.I am not saying that this is a bad thing or that it is a bad paint, BUT the thing that really,really anoys me is that every single one of theese ''new handmade brands'' on Etsy and everywhere else who ofcourse uses the PO49 you have, even though they are very well aware of that fact, they don't even mention it and even when asked they somehow avoid a direct answer!The video you created is great and very well made, i just wanted to clarify a few things so that other people will be made aware of it!
