Iqbal ,The Japanese quince bonsai is a very nice tree 👍 do you have any suggestions on how to turn my lemon tree into bonsai?
@mikbonsai6 жыл бұрын
Your lemon tree,, is that the one in the deep yellow pot on Instagram ? I that is the one, then you need to thicken the trunk , so leave it in this pot for at least one or two more seasons. You can start working on the top. All the branches are growing up wards and are getting thin and long. You will need to wire and re position the branches horizontally and also reduce the length. You are not on fb, so it is difficult to show you where to reposition the branches. By doing this you are making a start on the tree, except it will be in this deep pot instead of a bonsai pot. I hope that is helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers

After you have joined fb and have your page, join my KZbin subscribers only group also "mikBonsai the link is to follow. Read the pinned note carefully as I have having to rewrite it all for each individual, after that post four pics at eye level as per the pined post. I down load them, work in MS paint and mark the work you need to do and up load. Do not get carried away and do work I have not suggested as you will need to post after pics for me to fine tune if necessary. As any work I did nor suggest, messes the tree up and I give up at that point. I hope you understand, as its is hard to teach online. See you inside. facebook.com/groups/mikbonsai/

@mikbonsai6 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, After it finishes flowering is the best time to prune. Do try and propagate the cuttings and you will have lots of smaller trees. Thanks for visiting and watching. Cheers.

Wow!What a lovely tree it is! It has a nicely shaped trunk.Bonsai trees with blooms are just amazing. I'm sure you are definitely going to reshape or restyle it. Then it'll look more beautiful obviously. These days instead of scorching summers surprisingly we are enjoying very pleasant weather, as it's raining with hails every other day. Though it's not a good change...Climates should not change at all...But.. Love

Hello Anita, For the last four years I have not done much with this tree, except for the occasional pruning. Was nurturing it back to health as had been badly neglected in this bonsai nursery for over 20 years. As no one was buying, no maintenance was being done, no feeding, just about got watered. Its the first year its flowered. I hope to prune it this summer and will not do too much for now. Weather here is also crazy, March we had snow and April was very cold and now its very hot, un bearably hot. All the best x

Hi Eman, Glad you like the video, these trees are stunning when in flower, this is its first year as has suffered neglect at the hands of the bonsai nursery in Wales. Now its back after four years of TLC. If ever you come down this way do let me know in advance so I can make arrangements to spend some time with you in the bonsai nursery. Cheers

Beautiful tree. I just recently purchased one. When is the best time to repot and prune?
@mikbonsai6 жыл бұрын
Hello Tiffany, Spring is the best time to repot and if it is still cold where you are, then you can do it now, other wise wait until next spring. The flowers will turn into fruit. You can prune after it has finished flowering, but if you wish it to fruit, do not prune where the flowers are turning into little fruits. You can propagate the cuttings and make more little quince trees quince. Thanks for watching and commenting. mikbonsai I'm in CT in the US. I'm asking because some people have told me to repot this particular tree in November. And thank you for the quick reply
@mikbonsai6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for letting me know your location. If I was planting a bush, shrub or a tree in the ground in my garden, then November is a good time to do it. However, for bonsai its traditionally done in Spring, just as the trees are coming out of dormancy. I hope that helps.

Hi I'm looking to purchase one like this with the trunck about the same size in white flower. It's a Japanese quince and the bark is really really flaky to the extent that it crumbles off and underneath it look like the one you have in this video. Is this normal? How old is the one in this video
@mikbonsai5 жыл бұрын
irstly apologies for the delay in replying, had two deaths in the family in the last six months. I too have had flaky bark which I leave on and it fell off on its own accord and my tree is fine. Just check to make sure the tree is healthy, foliage is dense after flowering. Cheers Iqbal

I'm confused about quince. please explain about the difference varieties as there are large quince trees which produce a large fruit.
@mikbonsai6 жыл бұрын
If planted int the ground and left to grow, this and any of my other quince trees would become big. It is the same quince trees of various varieties being made into bonsai. This one happens to be Japanese. As for fruit, my trees do bear fruit and is slightly smaller than the normal size. I hope that helps.
@michaelcowart61006 жыл бұрын
So you are saying that all varieties of quince will develop into a large fruit bearing tree if cultivated as such? I have a friend who has a rather old quince plant which was left to grow and it developed as a sprawling vine type.
@mikbonsai6 жыл бұрын
You got it. Having said that, the quince trunks are very difficult to thicken and tend to be long and thin (sprawling vine type) and tends to be a clump style, many trunks when left to grow unchecked.
@cristianbranea50343 жыл бұрын
@@mikbonsai This is a confusion. This tree is not Japanese flowering quince (Chaenomeles Japonica Chojubai), but the quince tree (Cydonia Oblonga). They are not just two different species, but different Genus as well, they look very different. Beautiful tree though.

Great, nurture it and it will delight you next spring with beautiful flowers before any leaves appear.
@chrisscott38935 жыл бұрын
This is a Chinese quince not a Japanese quince. Chojubai are amazing but would never get this big. Completely different variety. Dont want to be that guy but I am being the guy to correct an obvious fault.
@mikbonsai5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I bought this tree many years ago from aThomas who lives and has run his bonsai nursery for many many years. He had it in his nursery for a very long time and when I bought it, it has been badly neglected. At the time he told me what it was. Besides I have a lot of Chinese quince trees which both flower and fruit. The Chinese Quince flowers are very different from this one and I do believe this to be a Japanese Quince. As for its size , this tree is incredibly old and I do know all about the thickness of the Chinese and Japanese Quince trees. Appreciate your desire to help, but sorry mate you got this one wrong. Cheers Iqbal
@chrisscott38935 жыл бұрын
@@mikbonsai didn't mean to be rude but was just noting that it wasnt the chojubai variety of Japanese quice. I have Japanese quince ( toyp nishiki) which are larger variety and definitely different from Chinese quince and the larger variety. All I was saying is that it is not the chojubai variety which I also have a ton of which have leaves no bigger then an eraser and smaller overall size. Sounds like we were both correct in our own rights
@mikbonsai5 жыл бұрын
Apologies for the late reply. There are many different varieties, as my tree is so old and changed hands a few times, all people remember was that its a Japanese Quince, but not what variety. So you are right about yours and I don't know what variety mine is. Mistry solved.
@tayh36455 жыл бұрын
If it helps, try comparing your specimen to something called 'Cydonia oblonga' a 'fruiting quince' which I believe to be what you possess here (but couldn't get a good enough look to say for 100% certain) most species of quince (Chaenomeles spp.) that I am familiar with will hardly ever get a trunk like this, much less a bark texture like that. The flowers also tend to bloom along the sides of the stems, not near the tips like yours seems to do. Despite their differences quinces (chaenomeles) and Cydonia (''fruiting quince") are often spoken of interchangeably which only manages to complicate things.
@tayh36455 жыл бұрын
Strike that, I'm almost positive now that it's the Pseudocydonia (False cydonia.....which I suppose could also be read as 'false fruiting quince'.... though it still makes a similar fruit.) Pseudocydonia sinensis has the same upturned pink flowers and beautiful bark/trunk as your tree here, and can still make the same kind of fruit flowering and fruiting quince are known for.
@addran12103 жыл бұрын
Looks like a pseudocydonia to me
@mikbonsai3 жыл бұрын
You probably may have more information than me, as I don't know which specie of Quince it is.
