I remember playing as one of the spider-hives in the playtest for this game - though I made a hive that was still pretty new to existence and hadn't solidified its identity yet. So, I played "D.A.V.E.", the Democratic Arachnids for Voracious Exploration. And I had to keep a copy of the constitution all my spiders had signed, and transparently tell my party members the results of my hive votes. "You wish for DAVE to be captain of ship? 45% of DAVE agrees this is good idea. The rest are smarter than that." :P Good times :) Loved this review, this setup, and this new expansion into RPGs. Stay awesome Quinn and team!!

Personal tip: instead of using those cardboard tabs, use different sized dice to represent clocks, moving to the respective number on the die to represent each stage. It allows you to dial them up and down in equal respects

Currently a couple sessions into a Wildsea campaign where my crew have also stumbled into making an ambulance. They've leaned heavily into the coastguard vibe, with one player playing a Kitesailor from the new Storm & Root expansion to act as the helicopter. But in classic RPG fashion, they also very hungry to get reward for their good deeds, and so it's turning in to a strange turfwar game with other rescue ships, a la 19C New York fire brigades! This game is a joy

@@felixisaacs Felix, I''ve said on the Discord already (plug for everyone interested in the game to join).... the stories are so emergent! You've made such a compelling game, almost to a fault, where Session 0 is as exciting as gameplay itself! Other party memebers include an Augur and a Steep who, before even Session 1, decided that they were in a symbiotic relationship; the Itzezko Augur drinking hallucinigenic teas to point the Gau Steep towards wilder and weirder ingredients. You guys have killed it, in Core and S&R. Can't wait to see v2!

Take all this with a chill vibe as I wouldn't bother with this comment at all if not to boost engagement on a channels 1st video. I can absolutely see where you're coming from. In fact, I'm the sort who would enjoy these more if all the gimmicks were jettisoned entirely and we just got straight down to the insightful review and thoughtful commentary. But these aren't made just for me! Content like this always has to be something the creator wants to make and also something with sufficiently broad appeal. One of the strengths of the format is that it is so easy to replay a portion if you find yourself distracted. In this case, there was no chance that I'd miss out on Felix's comments no matter how distracted I got, as I could trivially go back to review them. @@thpion

i am surprised than the whispers mechanic does not interacts with the languages mechanic) like, whispers in foreign languages become more powerful the better you know them, and better knowledge also allows you to find more exquisite whispers, or maybe DRAWS them to you because you (probably ONLY you) can understand them. Mechanically, it can be reflected as much greater impact of whispers in certain language if you know it especially well. Maybe some players will even ask their master to increase their language skill to FOUR - just to unlock more whispers and their power!

A great initial episode! The setting really reminds me of Jim Butcher's Cinder Spires series with its terrifying danger forest covering the land and humanity & friends sailing above it on airships; just replace Cinder Spire's brass steampunk, spires, & crystal magic with monster parts, more fantasy species, and even weirder things. Though I imagine you can slide the sentient cats into Wildsea with minimal changes. I really like the idea of tying your characters knowledge together with languages. It makes sense that if you spend a lot of time on a subject, you'll learn all the nuances and slang and acronyms.

I need more of this as soon as possible. Also what a wonderful world that TTRPG sets up! I'm instantly hooked by the concept of playing a moth person.

This was absolutely brilliant and I loved the outro John Carpenter music vibes This was so much fun, I love everything about this game (especially the wierd fantasy of China Mieville nods) and the review. I've followed SU&SD for over a decade I'm pretty sure. One of the things that got me back into DMing and getting my group to play TTRPGs again was the SU&SD video about "Why now is the perfect time to get into TTRPGs" And here we are...

I consume a LOT of RPG reviews and yours are among the best. I really get a sense of what the game might be like to run or play from your descriptions. For example, I’ve listened to reviews of this game before and thought “okay this might be interesting “ to now it feels like a must play for me.

EDIT: Forgot to say, great video and I am keen to hear more from you. Subscribed :) no criticisms for you personally, I just wanted to share my experience with the Wildsea RPG. 4:07 as someone who tried to run a Wildsea campaign, I must inform you that unfortunately this is not true for everyone. I really struggled to enjoy running the Wildsea RPG because, despite the sheer richness of the setting, it felt like it lacked an actual game to play. I constantly felt like I had to create my own game with my own rules, and all the book offered was the concept of tracks and the core resolution mechanics. The monsters don't even specify the number of boxes their aspects should have i.e. they don't have stats, I have to try to figure it all out myself. Which would be fine, if there was at least one example of an encounter containing hazards and/or monster with stats, so that I had some benchmark to base my decisions off, but there isn't (AFAIK, happy to be corrected on that). To provide some contrast, Borg-likes (Death In Space being the one I've played the most) seem to do a good job of vibes-heavy, rules-light. But that's because they are actually rules-light. Wildsea seems to have a subtle complexity to it, but just doesn't explain how all the pieces are supposed to fit together into a cohesive gameplay experience with clear goals and challenges. As the GM, I did not feel like I was playing Wildsea. I felt like I was designing it. For myself and my friends who are avid gamers (many of us also have some game design experience and/or education), the mechanics are supremely important. We want to play a game, not just imagine a story and occasionally invent some numbers to roll against. Wildsea felt like it lacked that, or at least didn't do a good job of conveying what the core gameplay loop is supposed to look like. It's very much a "writer's room" game, which is fine for many people, but not for everyone. I hope it gets a 2nd edition that addresses this in some way.

16:57 I encountered the exact same issue with the healing rules lol I just shifted it all up by a few points so that a failure heals 1, conflict heals 2, and triumph heals 3. It was a combat-heavy campaign so that made sense for us.

I love the 3 session or so long promenade I got to do with this game, where our crew created a giant sentient chainsaw-snake ship who's means of being "stealthy" was having such a terrifying presence via sound/appearance it made others wanna avoid _us_ thinking we were one of the leviathans that prowled the Wildsea. And on that ship I played some sneaky, grumpy Mothryn Char (moth chef!!!) that emerged from amber-assisted pupation and expressed themselves through shade/hues of grey whilst cooking up meals made-up of questionably edible ingredients who eventually gained the ability to cook book's contents into the food!! And that's not even a fraction of the amazing, heartwarming nonsense we got up to in this game!

Haha, convincing the forest that you're a leviathan? That's genius. You've gotta do a plot where other leviathans come investigate, though.

@@Quinns_Quest I would love nothing more than to do that (if we were ever to return to that group). Oh my gosh, it being an actual creature itself could mean the ship falls in love with said leviathan instead of us fighting it!! :O

So so pleased by this new endeavor. Add Wildsea to the pile of FitD games that I want to play a full campaign of one day (the Sunless game vibes give it some points, but Band of Blades still comes first, sorry!) You may have a point about Symbaroum's lore but that book is so gorgeous I don't even care. The vibes, Quinns! That's what's important! You said it yourself! Next game: Lancer? Mothership?

Lovely review as always, Quinns! I was intrigued and want to try this one out. I am not very experienced with RPGs and have never DMd before, although I have been a player for some time. It would be interesting to hear your reflections on the difficulty levels of running/playing the RPGs you discuss in future videos!

That would be a welcome addition! Maybe not "difficulty" per se, but some thoughts on whether the system requires significant flexibility/improv chops, relative amounts of prep time, etc. could be helpful.

Online play is surprisingly decent these days. In addition to being an easier sell to my local friends (no travel, no hosting duties, no cleanup); I also found a purely online group a couple of years ago on a reading/book sharing forum of all places. We've got a core of 10 who may skip a given campaign, but always show for the ones they do join. Such that any given campaign generally has 5-7 in it for the long haul. Since it's a decent sized, international forum, each new campaign attracts a few new folks. Only about one in 10 sticks, but that's been plenty to sustain the group and add a little spice now and then. I've met folks from Scotland, England, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Romania, Japan, Australia & New Zealand. We've played a half dozen campaigns in games from 5e/Dark Eye to Shadowrun, Fate & Delta Green with 5 different long term GMs. Plus each of us in the core group has GMd some one shots to get our feet wet or to try out new systems. Overall it's been a great experience. We've played on Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Foundry and most recently Role. With the possible exception of Fantasy Grounds (which was both pricey and fiddly in our experience) they are all perfectly enjoyable to use. Even Fantasy Grounds would probably be fine if you were willing to throw the necessary time & money at it. Absolutely worth looking into if you don't have a local group handy ... even if you do it can be a great way to meet and game with a broad range of people and systems.
