I've seen all four videos of these and am beginning to think that each episode of iCarly and this are just cries for help from the writing staff. Would explain the amount of sexual harassment, violence and sadism behind the scenes. It's subtle messaging for what Schneider was really like. I expect Sam and Cat may also have similar plotlines.

@@lorddrayvon1426 i’ve seen another video addressing how sexualised ariana was while playing cat (whilst also talking about the sexualisation of jennette mccurdy). it becomes really prominent in the later seasons. as soon as she stopped acting natural while playing cat, it went extremely downhill. like when she was “drinking” water upside down, they all knew what they were doing to her. and it’s upsetting. jennette and ariana were some of the most sexualised characters, thus why they randomly got a show together. most of this paragraph is from that video with some of my own commentary.

in case anyone was curious, as an avid viewer of matt bennett’s twitch streams (my comments on stream were in this video!) i’d like to clarify that matt is very sarcastic on stream, and he completely made up the “lost episodes”. in a later stream he even made up a whole story of how you have to find a treasure map to find them.

Honestly, a better running joke about Trina, rather than just 'she sucks at everything,' would've been that she's really talented, but only at things she doesn't care about, or when she's not trying to be. Some examples to get my point across: -Trina and Tori are trying out for the cheerleading team. Tori gets in because she's perfect at everything, but Trina doesn't. She angrily kicks the ball and walks away, not seeing that she's scored a field goal all the way across the entire stadium. The coach tries to get her to try out for football, but she was only interested in the cheerleading part. -Trina is trying to audition for the school; she is trying to sing a pop song, and completely botching it. The faculty all tell her she sucks, to which to gives an impromptu, passionate monologue about how they're all jerks who don't know anything and how she's struggled to get here, and that wows them so much they let her in on the spot. -Some kind of art class. Everyone is painting portraits, and Trina is doing terribly. She gets fed up, just throws a bunch of stuff on the canvas, and storms out. An Art Guy™ shows up and immediately begins praising such a well made abstract expression of pure rage, asking who made such an incredible piece. Tori takes credit because she's a terrible person.

if we ever get a victorious reboot i want them to elaborate on that damn "playing pirates" joke. i KNOW it's a molestation joke but MY ideal interpretation is that robbie just really, REALLY likes historically accurate pirate roleplay, including things like descriptions of ship-borne illnesses, and various torture methods, but cat just wanted to put on pirate hats and hit robbie with a fake sword over and over. so she doesn't like how he plays pirates because she gets freaked out by his grossly detailed story about dying of scurvy

i met victoria justice once! she had this random signing at a random shopping mall in brazil, i think it was 2012? i was maybe 13 and spoke very broken english. anyway, we were only allowed to get one autograph from her, but i went up to her and explained as best as i could that i had a friend who lived far away who loved her but couldn't make it, and if she could sign an extra pic for said friend. she was like "of course i can! that is so sweet of you!" she had to get up and ask someone from her team for an extra pic, because we were all only given one to sign. anyway, somewhere someplace i have an autograph from victoria justice, my friend has hers that i mailed to her and i have the memory of her just being so nice and warm to me

One thing the Slap segments really illustrate is how deeply, deeply uncomfortable so much of this show's humor is when you remove the laugh track. Beck and Jade's fights make my skin crawl. They make me want to leave the room. The Slap humor surrounding Robbie either makes me feel really bad for him, or it makes me want to remove him from this mortal coil with my own two hands. The only exception to this is Sinjin, who somehow gets exponentially funnier when everything he says is buffeted by long periods of uncomfortable silence.

Actually, the fact that Jade watched the livestream of Beck and Tori till the end and didn’t turned it off after they leaned in for a kiss makes me very glad. I’m so so so tired of this annoying plot device when there is some love triangle or similar stuff and one character leaves too soon or doesn’t listen till the end and then there’s a huge brawl caused by a simple misunderstanding. So, the writers managed to do something great, good for them ig

Trina brought them tacos. She also always supports Sinjin's endeavors. And she once drove to Bakersfield from LA (after school, mind you, so with traffic) to retrieve the solvent for the industrial glue. We never talked about how Liz Gillies was almost certainly groomed on this show when she was a minor. She was 16 when the show began and was introduced to the Victorious music composer Michael Corcoran, who was nearly 40 at the time. They didn't "officially date" until shortly after she turned 18, but... it's clear what's happened here. The rumors about Schneider are one thing (and are probably also true), but Liz Gillies being groomed at the age of 16 for a man far, far older than she is definitely happened.

It is absolutely ridiculous how nickelodeon would make jokes about Trina/ Daniella Monet being ugly when she is clearly not in Victorious and then in Grow Up Timmy Turner she's now the "hot girl" character when she looks the same. It also continues the whole "conventionally unattractive people are bad people" stereotype.

I mean… I think it’s more “pretty girly girls are bad people” because it’s always the nlog that’s plain looking and “she wears short skirts, I wear T-Shirts” type girls that always gets the guy. But anyways, it really was stupid for them to pretend that she wasn’t really attractive.
@cajunguy6502
@cajunguy6502 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely. They didn't even make any effort to make her look any less attractive than the other girls! But even if we talk about "ugly on the inside" she doesn't qualify. Her biggest flaw is overestimating her talent? She's not a bitch like jade or a bimbo like Kat, which are normally the two "she's hot but I'll pass" girls in TV shows. She's an attractive girl who is annoying. Her character is a failure of the writing mantra "Show, don't tell" they told us she was terrible, but showed us nothing to support it. Even irl Tori Justice shipped her with THE HOT PRINCE in her headcannon, so we know the actors saw this as an issue too.
@panashe5268
@panashe5268 2 жыл бұрын
If they used a girl who was actually considered unattractive by beauty standards then people today would’ve considered it bullying and Victorious would’ve been looked down upon as a series. So of course they use someone attractive. I think they tried to allude to the fact that Trina was unattractive because of her personality not because of her facial features. It’s the same thing with Drake and Josh. Josh was supposed to be considered “unattractive” because he was overweight. But when he lost all the weight he became significantly more attractive to women so instead of using his outside features they continued to make him really awkward, whiny, nerdy etc. so that Drake still seemed like the “cooler brother.” A similar formula was used on Zack and Cody.

The storyline about beck faking being interested in in trina really broke me because I had something similar happen to me. Not to that scale if course but this really pretty guy pretended to be interested in me and asked for my number. You have no idea how amazing this made me feel, I was on cloud nine. I was so insecure about myself that the idea of a guy being interested in me was a fantasy but now it finally happened. (It was especially exciting because they’re weren’t many other gay guys in the area ) I was so happy that someone finally liked me that I ignored all the red flags. This guy was one of the popular kids, he played football, he hung out with people that I knew for a fact where homophobic, but I was so oblivious to it. It was to good to be true! And it wasn’t. He eventually blew his cover when I actually started texting him and as soon as I realized it was a joke my heart shattered and I felt the same way trina did. Extremely insecure, no one could ever like me and no one ever will. It’s so screwed up that a middle school boy can traumatize someone like that in the matter of a week. I felt so stupid to ever believe anyone would like me. In short: DO NOT under any circumstances fake liking someone because it can cause so much damage.

Same here, I had something similar happen to me, also in middle school. When you already have low self-esteem and you get built up by someone gaslighting you like that it can REALLY mess with you. To this day I have a hard time believing that I'm actually worthy of love or even a good person, all because someone used me for their own amusement in that way. I would've preferred a flatout rejection rather than finding out I was being lied to for so long, and in the worst way possible too (got added to the vent group chat as joke because everyone had just finished making fun of me). Albeit in the episode Trina started spreading the rumor that Beck was interested in her, but the hurt still stands. Trina gets gaslit and the gang goes back to emotionally abusing and manipulating her.

Jades reaction to Sinjin's sock puppet thing is so kind compared to how she is usually presented in the shows. She tries to show and reason with Sinjin why what he is doing is wrong instead of blowing up and cussing him out like she would with, say, Robbie or Tori. She had every right to be creeped out and call him names, instead she grabs him by the hand, looks him in the eye and says "hey, this isn't ok." which is wild.
@BadDrawer

She is surprisingly gentle but firm about it which is very mature. She just tries to get him to look at her so she knows he's taking in what she's saying and just tells him in a soft but assertive tone "this is not right" and an "okay?" So she can confirm he understands. Granted I see that more with kids that are elementary and middle school age but considering how completely ashamed and terrified he presents I think that was pretty appropriate

Suggestion for fixing Trina's whole weird treatment. Make her a stunt woman. She is a martial artist, and stunt acting would be a believable reason for her to be in Hollywood Arts. Also it would mean all the injuries she gets could be hand waved away as her just being able to take a hit or knowing how to avoid getting properly hurt even in sudden circumstances. Also it would add a good source of rivalry between the sisters because Trina could be the tough one who kinda bullies Tori a bit. Lastly, she can still want to be a singer and all that, and her story could be more about realising her talents lie elsewhere - but are still fucking cool

Do stunt doubles tie into the “Hollywood” part? Yes. But does it tie into the “arts” part? Not really. Sure there could maybe be an argument for that but it typically wouldn’t be considered a creative art which means art schools wouldn’t accept them. Edit: some of you guys seem to be misunderstanding what exactly in saying to fit the theory being presented. Because sure it can be considered an art, but stunt doubling being in an arts school _is_ a stretch, I’ve never seen any arts school have this as a course or have been a qualifier to get into an arts school.

“The Victorious fandom seems to have a version of Victorious that exists exclusively in their own minds.” That’s pretty common in fandoms, in my experience, especially fandoms for media that’s noticeably flawed. Some of them even drop the pretense and have people doing complete ground up rewrites all over the place. A show gives people something that sparks an idea in their heads, and they like the idea it sparked better than the thing itself, but the thing is what made the spark so they keep it attached to the thing.

Just because Lila said she'd steal all of Marinette's friends doesn't mean that she'll actually succede. Like, Alya is such a supportive friend in cannon, she might fall for some of Lila's lies, but she doesn't immediately abandon Marinette or side with Lila over Marinette. She was one of the first people who stood up for her when Lila almost got her expelled. People need to stop hating on Alya. Sorry, this went on a complete tangent, my point was that the MLB fandom does this too.

yeah exactly this. when quinton first mentions how she pretends she's under her bed i was like "oh okay, kinda sad", but then when he played the clip i was like "oh, yeah that's a genuine trauma response there. she has definitely grown up with people arguing in her house and beneath her bed was her hiding spot/safe space". she's seriously terrified there and it's heartbreaking to watch, especially as someone who's had frequent arguments happen in their house througout their childhood.

Sinjin being a senior makes perfect sense to me. He's been around the block. He knows. It's not just that he's above it all, he's on a whole new level. He knows what he's about. Like, at the very least, he just doesn't have it in him to care that much about all the bullshit anymore, and that brings him the power to truly live free. After 4 years of being teenage morons, most of my graduating class felt and acted the same way. Why give a shit what everyone else thinks when you're gonna be gone the next year?

I agree that my memory of that relatiomship was different, but I liked that there was a couple and not another thing where the lead ends up with the pretty boy after a bunch of back and forth during the runtime of the show. Even nowadays we hardly ever have couples that ARE a couple. Most shows even then just have people get together, and then they realise it's not true love and then they replace the love interest with another. Eventhough the relationship itself was bad, I thought it's interesting that they put a couple in thebshow that is consistently dating for most of the show.

@@Lucifersfursona riiight?? I will from now on blame Nick for shaping my shitty communication skills in relationships. My comment here was really just a throwaway "give credit where credit is due" type of comment. Before Victorious I watched Zoey 101 and ICarly. Both have an endless back and forth with the leads about who should end up with who, both have an episode where they have a guy rescue the girl and have a 1 episode relationship that ends because they want to be sure they actually love eachother. All of the shows end with the leads finally getting together, but when I watched Victorious, I thought it's kinda revolutionary, who else had a couple in the show that was going to remain a couple? No one did. They clearly don't know how to portray a couple, but I thought it's great that Jade and Beck are seperate characters that also date eachother and no one had to be hit by a vehicle for that to happen. It's the most normal thing Nick was capable of portraying at the time.

I honestly feel so bad for both Tori and Trina. Their parents neglect both of them, and it's implied that this has been going on for their entire lives. Trina likely got told to look after Tori, which made her resent her sister. That's why the writers try to make it seem like Trina is so mean to Tori, and that's also the reason Tori doesn't like Trina. They both wanted the same thing, and both felt like the other got in the way. They tried to tear one another down at every turn to "win" their parents affection, and their parents did nothing about it. The worst part is that they never got what they wanted, which probably fueled the fire. I think that Trina tried in more flashy ways to get their parents attention, and that's why they don't love her. Tori, in the pilot, seemed like the type to suffer silently to get her parent's attention. Maybe getting good grades, or cleaning her room better, doing dishes, cooking, etc- quiet activities. But then Trina had her accident at the stage show, and the crowd loves her. Their parents started tolerating Tori because they started seeing more potential. They see a chance to get famous by association, when they don't give a shit if either of their daughters have their basic needs met. They care about them shutting their mouths and leaving them alone. It doesn't matter if they have nothing to eat. It doesn't matter if they get mouth surgery and are in massive pain. It doesn't matter if they need their parents guidance and god forbid if they want to hang out with their parents. They don't give a shit about their kids and that's why they're so fucked up. They're both need a lot of ✨therapy✨

I didn't really watch much Victorious (especially after the first season or two) and how the parents are written absolutely blows my mind. Like... why exactly did they think writing an affair into a kids show was a good call? And that scene where Tori's mom just straight up eats all the food in the house and tells Tori to starve... like who does that??? Do the writers have some mommy issues they're trying to work through???

@@suicune95 I think it's an outgrowth of a gag from Drake and Josh, where their dad is a weatherman whose rival is an extremely handsome weatherman. Megan is obsessed with the handsome rival weatherman, and while I don't think the mom is implied to be unfaithful, she does acknowledge that he's good looking. So the Victorious version of that is meaner, edgier, and probably a punishment to David's actor for quitting the show. As for why halfway through the show Tori's mom becomes a terrible person, I think the writers just thought that was funny. For a Watsonian explanation, maybe Tori turning out to have talent led to her parents deciding they didn't have to put as much effort into taking care of her, as she can take care of the family now.

@@breadeater1194 "the writers just thought it was funny" is the true reason behind everything. They didn't put thought into these characters or relationships beyond "it's funny." There are a couple of scenes where there is subtext, even if unintentionally. What comes to mind to me is in the diddlybops, where Tori tries to cheer him up, then he writes a love song immediately after she leaves and then it cuts to him singing it to Tori. That isn't as solid as it sounds in context, as the show would go on, it would be common for them to write and sing songs that have nothing thematically to do with what's going on, but I could totally see how someone would look at that scene and think it was meant to suggest a romantic relationship. I'm actually not a Tandre shipper, I'm a Jori shipper, but I think it's odd when some ones says "it only exists in there heads" because that is literally all art. Every piece of art in the world is interpretable, and it's entirely possible that some one else could pick up on a different subtext than you or the next person.

I was a background actor (shrugger) on quite a few episodes of both iCarly and Victorious. Your info at 5:38:38 is all accurate. Yes, that is exactly where the Asphalt Cafe scenes were filmed, and the glass doors you see in those scenes are literally the front doors that the background actors used every shoot. Was it for the Hollywood sign shot? Maybe, but it was also super convenient to shoot there, as often one day of filming would be able to cover a wide range of scenes (inside the school, Asphalt Cafe, ect) without wasting too much time going between locations for shooting. Also to add, typically the noise was not TOO bad as the outdoor scenes were usually done in the morning after rush hour. I remember a police/ambulance siren would cause a few seconds of delay in between takes, but that was a rather infrequent occurrence.

IDK if I’d want to watch him talk about the Disney shows. The fun of analyzing the Nick shows from that era is that they were still very corporate and formulaic kids tv but there’s this manic, unhinged aspect to them, especially in the ways where they don’t quite pull off the things they want to do. I honestly think the Disney ones of that era are too well oiled and competently managed to be that engaging as a retrospective. You watch Drake and Josh or ICarly and you’re like “Ok these people are either working through some stuff or they’re deliberately trying to one up each other with how much they can get away with” while the Disney ones all felt very carefully tested before going forward with anything.

Like I would say Sinjin is the only character in this show I would look at and say that I can actually relate because in a way he was the creative theatre kid at school who was definitely way more fun to be around and the production ending is something I agree with Quinton on, it is such a befitting ending that the real theatre kid in the show who was a punching bag for the others pointed out how they failed, I think the only thing that could've maybe been a better ending is "Trina actually proves to have talent," but because the other kids can't see past her being a little bit annoying and maybe a tiny bit cringy, they weren't able to see that she was actually a talented person, it's just her trauma was holding her back because really sometimes trauma can do that.

My take on the trina character is that she ended up so obssessed with being better than everyone else because of all the emotional abuse she recieves at home. I dont doubt that they treated her just as badly even before her personality became the way it is. Also the more you start to learn about hte character the more I started to realize that its basically a defense mechanism against all the negative things she's told by everyone and all the comparing everyone does between her and tori

I figured it out. There are no mistakes. When Cat's favorite actress says that she's playing David Schwimmer's wife on The Dead, it doesn't imply that David Schwimmer himself is alive. In fact, it implies the OPPOSITE. The show, after all, is called "The Dead," so it's about dead people. She could very easily be playing the CHARACTER of David Schwimmer, the dead actor's, wife, WITHOUT the man himself being involved, OR she is playing the wife opposite a DIFFERENT actor playing a CHARACTER named David Schwimmer. There ARE no mistakes.

my guess for why people regard beck and jade's relationship as wholesome and cute is that it was the first physically affectionate relationship we actually saw on tv. the two are always touching, especially with jade always sitting on beck's lap, and it isn't like most kid's show relationships. most of the characters we saw dating on tv when we were growing up would barely hold hands, they would mostly just kiss on screen. but since beck and jade already have all the same classes and friends, they spend all their time together anyway in a way we just hadn't really seen before. we saw dating as going on occasional dates, so the idea that a relationship could be physically affectionate in ways other than kissing was new and exciting, and it overshadowed all the stuff about them hating each other.

That's a great call. Most of the time you'd only know they're a couple in those shows bc they say they are or the occasional kiss. But most of the time they come across platonic. Which is kind of funny as teenage couples irl are probably the touchiest. They're constantly on top of each other and are dysfunctional. So jade and beck were pretty realistic when most on these shows aren't.

For those wondering, the Andre's age rant at 2:46:50 is as follows: "You see, in the Pilot Episode, Trina says that Andre is in the Tenth Grade. And while you might argue that she just got his age wrong, just like she just got his name wrong, you also have to keep in mind that Trina is a year older than all the other characters. And when Trina finds out that she can't do the annual showcase, someone comments, "there's always next year", implying that she's NOT a Senior, because if she WAS a Senior there wouldn't BE a next year for her, meaning that she has to, at the very least, be a Junior, or earlier. Through the end of Season 2, Trina talks about the Seniors at the school as if she isn't one, and it's not until Season 3, where it's first implied that a year has passed In-Universe, that Trina's been at this school for four years, something which is allegedly confirmed in Season 4, although I haven't gotten that far yet."

As someone who's never watched the series beyond these videos, here's my theory on Tori, Beck, and Jade: Imagine Tori is closeted. She doesn't even realize it herself. Despite this, she's friends with the one guy who every girl INSISTS is the most attractive, but she just doesn't see it. Still, she convinces herself she IS attracted to him, because she thinks that's "normal". As long as Jade and Beck stay together, she doesn't need to think about it. Despite her competitive tensions with Jade, she grows attracted to her which only further intensifies their jagged friendship. But when she sees Beck and Jade together, she still FEELS something, but convinces herself that it's for Beck. Time passes after Beck and Jade break up, but when Tori has a genuine chance at being with Beck, she can only think about Jade: the one she's supposedly hates.

Hey, good job with just how much attention you put towards properly conveying the tone of this segment. It gives the text life, and I feel kinda silly for not having done so myself. Also, I'm curious: Did you have to use some other software to make the dialogue in that segment discernable, or could you tell what he was saying just from slowing the KZbin video? Because at first I thought I'd just do the latter, but it was clear right away that it wasn't going to work since I still couldn't make out a single word being said. So, if you had to use video-editing software too, I'm glad I'm not alone in that regard, and, if you didn't, that's really impressive.

If this show was a true anti-sitcom in the vein of Always Sunny or What We Do In The Shadows, the episode where Cat's favorite sitcom actress dies and Tori fails her drivers test would end with the realization that the old woman in a wheelchair that Tori ran over *was* in fact Cat's favorite actress, cementing Tori as a canonical murderer and forcing Cat into a downward spiral ultimately pushing her into a psychotic break, at which point she hallucinates the events of the April Fools day episode. But the writers of this show are cowards so none of that ever happened.

During the scene where Trina and Cat sing Five Fingers to the Face in Season 1 there's a part where Cat refuses to sing the next line "because it's dirty". When the song is revisited later in full Andre sings the next line, which is "I'm a pirate and you're my booty". So it might be foreshadowing through retcon, but the writers are really trying to establish that the concept of pirates inherently has some sexual connotations in Cat's mind, which yes, feeds into the Cat hating Robbie playing pirates thing.
