At that point, governs making more off the home "owner" than the bank that financed the loan. Reminds me of the fuel taxes in some places where the government takes more per gallon in taxes than the oil company takes in profit per gallon.

Prop tax equals 5% of property value/cost for new home. I never heard of such a high rate. In Fl new home prop tax about 1.5% of value then capped by Homestead for as long as you live in the home and can be transferred to a new home moved into.

Mother's LI, NY $400k market value 1700 sq' house prop tax $9800. My Fl $400k market value 3000 sq' pool home 5 miles from beach prop tax $2750 a year. Fl has Homestead protection laws protecting homeowners. LI, NY screws theirs. Why I left many decades ago.

You forget mortgage.. utilities.. house repair. Unless they had 800k laying around to pay cash which who the hell does. Realistically between their mortgage and say 20k a year in property taxes their bills are 4k+ a month excluding utilities. Factor in random home repairs and utilities their bills are closer to 5k a month easily. Now because they just got screwed on taxes their bills are probably somewhere closer to 7k a month EASY. Home insurance, taxes, mortgage, utilities, misc home repairs. Easily close to 7k a month. Guess what. Nobody will want to buy that house now. 40k in property taxes? Ya right. They are gonna take a major loss of they have to sell.

Thats still outrageous. An 800k home in other states across the country may cost 10k or less a year in property taxes. Its theft along with the corrupt teachers unions. And guess what. Long island doesn't exactly have the best schools but thats the majority of our taxes. 40k a year in taxes that house won't sell to anyone now if they can't afford it anymore. Don't worry people that live here are to stupid to realize how badly the schools are raping them in taxes. I pay 16k a year on a 1400sq ft ranch built in 1950. Just about 11k just going to the schools. 150 to 160k classroom of as little as 8 teacher salaries must be worth it. Its highway robbery the taxes we pay in long island. Anywhere else the same house would be not even 1/2 the the taxes even if the value was the same.
