+ivabra Yes. You're starting with all the surface covered so you obviously can't rotate the pieces and get something with less surface. When you rotate the pieces you make the square somewhat bigger and all the surface of the void in the middle is spread all around. You can actually see in his demonstration that the new square doesn't fit exactly. It is larger by something like 2 millimeters on each side. Print it you will see by yourself (pdf in the description).

+FigK7 The second square is about 2 percent bigger than the first square. Since the square is a little bit bigger there is a space in the middle, but since its only about 2% bigger its hard to tell the difference. Edit: Sorry the side length is about 2% bigger the actual area is 4% bigger.
