Hey everyone, in this video I wanted to do a Doug DeMuro style video talking through some of the quirks that I have found on my 2002 Toyota Tundra over the last 2 years of ownership. Let me know if you've got any other quirks down in the comments below! Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoyed the video! - Sal

Great list, Sal! One quick note on the transmission though: The early years of the Tundra actually had a 3 speed + OD. They didn't get a 4 speed + OD until 2005, when they also added VVT-i. I have a 2004 DoubleCab myself, and I have to say my favorite quirk/feature is the ability to roll down the entire rear window!
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I completely misunderstood that the earlier models had a 3 speed + OD and the later ones had a 4 speed + OD. In my mind, the OD gear was added on top of the 4 speed trans, not actually being the 4th gear. I always hate spreading misinformation in my videos, so I apologize for the bad info and appreciate you clearing it up. That's a great quirk for the double cab tundras to have that roll down window. Really wish that I had one in my truck, maybe one day I will upgrade to a DC. Thank you again - Sal

@@JDMDriveway Right there with you, it was an oddly difficult fact to confirm when I was originally looking for a vehicle with the 2UZ. It was made more confusing when I found that the 'luxury' models of the same generation/year (e.g. the Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus GX470, and Lexus LX470) all had the 5 speed (4+OD) even though the Tundra didn't until 2005. The easiest way I found to visually confirm this was by looking at the gauge cluster of a 2005 vs 2004 and seeing which gears were selectable below Drive. Thanks for reading the comments, and keep up the good work man!

My 1997 Celica GT had the same Key-Fob they were common in many Toyotas around that time. The bottom button could be programmed to unlock another car so you only had to carry one key-fob and you could unlock both of your Toyotas with the same one. It was a very handy feature for family's with two Toyotas in the drive way!

Great video. I have the ugly 05 stepside access cab. A cool quirk on it is the hidden center console compartment. It's actually next to the 4wd shifter not under where your arm would rest. It just looks like a flat spot to hold a phone but comes up and is a great hiding spot.

Bro it’s good to see your videos again! I loved my old 85 Toyota truck and that locking gas cap, lol… Loved it! Seems back in the day gas theft was legit man! People siphoned gas from unlocked tanks all the time. Keep up the great work man! A/C on when defrost is a safety thing to remove the moisture from the air! Helps no matter what temp the air is, if it’s dry it’ll clear your windshield faster and stay clearer. Love these trucks man! I just discovered your Tundra videos and they are very informative. I have the same model 2002 TRD Off Road. Mine is white with 123,000 miles and I bought it new, so I am the original owner. These trucks are very durable, but mine had gotten a bit run down over the years and I was having some common issues such as a water leak in the corner next to the rear seat and the dreaded check engine light, so I had to replace the rear window, 3rd brake light, EVAP canister and the O2 sensors. I recently did a three stage paint correction, applied a 5 year graphene/ceramic coating and cleaned the interior and engine bay with a steam cleaner. I was going to sell it, but my truck looks so good now I decided to keep it and drive it until the wheels fall off. Thanks for the videos. You have given me some great ideas for upgrades that I wasn't sure about like the stereo unit and the weather stripping under side windows.

I've had my 2002 for about 7 months now. Something that kept throwing me was when I'd go to get out of the truck, I'd see the Cargo light button lit up. I have 180k on my 05. There's obviously costs for wear items like oil, brakes, tires, fluids etc...but I have spent less than $2k on things that have broken in 18 years. I'm about to redo the whole front end, decided I'm gonna put a small lift on her, it'll come in at about $2500....Even including that, over the time I"ve owned the truck, the maintenance costs have been pretty much negligible

Funny thing. I work in Princeton Indiana where these trucks were made. The T-150 was publicity stunt by Toyota to try and get the name out there. After they “lost” the lawsuit we had tundra badges very quickly. Quicker than the amount of time it would take design to get the drawing to the supplier and that many badges cut. My dad worked at the factory there my whole childhood. Likely put a lot of these parts on. 👍

Another great video on the Tundra! My 2005, regular cab, 4wd, does not have locking gas door. The regular cab skimped on a lot of cosmetic/convenience features which you probably found in your research. Most people know vinyl floor, bench seat, manual windows, locks, mirrors, but glove box light missing and wiring plug still there? That's not saving much, ha. Also missing the double sun visor, but mounting holes above headliner make it easy to add.

Two quirks I would add in part 2 of this video are the map lights and the LSPV I wish I had noticed and removed the pieces of metal located behind the map light covers before I had already bought LEDs - these pieces are designed to reduce the light output making it usable to illuminate a map at night while driving without blinding yourself. They are a lot more effective with these pieces removed and without removing them LEDs won't even be effective. Coming from Chevy trucks I had never heard of a Load Sensing Proportioning Valve before, so I would call that a quirk too. In most cases of soft braking complaints, this LSPV needing a bleed is usually the cause, but it goes unfixed because they don't know the component even exists.
@JDMDriveway
@JDMDriveway Жыл бұрын
Great addition here, I have heard about the map light covers and plan to remove them when I upgrade my interior lighting at some point. I didn't even think about the LSPV, and its definitely a cool mechanical quirk of these trucks that seems a bit ahead of its time to help spread the load of braking when towing. Every vehicle I have owned for that last 30 years automatically kicked on the air compressor with defrost regardless of whether or not the ac button was pushed in or the light was on or off. It is to remove the humidity from the air (the cause of the window fog) and also the vent is automatically opened to help remove stale air from our moisture wicking bodies.

I was wondering what that Velcro part in the sunglasses holder was for, I would have never thought it would be for a hidden garage door opener. A quirk I found on my 2005 Tundra is that power to the running lights is cut off when you lock the truck, even if you have the switch in the "ON" position. That feature has definitely saved my battery once or twice when I forgot to turn them off on an overcast day.

2000 Tundra V8 motors were MIJ (Made in Japan) and shipped to the US to be installed into the Truck, I think that was the only model year for the MIJ motor then they were made in Indiana. @@jerrybaltazar2401 Before you replace your interior lights with LED, just remove the covers on the lights and then take the piece of metal off of the back side. It looks like a reflector but it's only purpose is to limit light through a small hole, designed for use while driving so it only illuminates the map in your lap. Sal, you are incorrect about the transmission. It is a four speed total. There is no fifth gear. Third is one to one. Fourth is overdrive and the gear ratio of fourth gear is 1:0.705 (overdrive). Only the 5 speed manual coupled with the V6 engine has five gears and the fifth being overdrive. The truck will not shift out of third until engine is warmed up. The feeling of the shift into “fifth or overdrive gear” is actually the torgue convertor lockout which makes both halves of the converter couple mechanically versus hydraulically for better fuel economy. All vehicles using torque converters have that feature. I had an old chevy car from the early 80’s that the converter would not unlock and stalled the engine at red lights because of a stuck solenoid. I unplugged that solenoid, got control of the converter again but mpg did suffer on the highway.
