I woke up this morning and went to the fridge. I grabbed all of my liquor and dumped it out in the yard. Today is the day I decided to get sober and it brought me here. I want to make it for real this time.

I am an alcoholic of 24 years. I’m a 43 year old woman. The longest I gave up for was 10 months. In that time I lost 2 stone and worked out 5 days a week. My body had never been fitter and stronger. I had courage. There is courage in facing the world sober. I am an addict. I have relapsed over and over again but I believe this is my journey to sobriety. I’m 3 weeks in and exercising daily. I read constantly about addiction. The more I learn the easier this is becoming. Children have to face so much and deal with life without hiding behind a source of temporary relief that drugs and alcohol provide. As adults we constantly seek out respite from the realities of life - a quick fix. I have nothing but admiration and respect for those who fight the daily grind of life sober. There is an absolute strength and resolve living life free of addiction.

I stopped drinking alcohol two and a half years ago. I quit because I got sick of how I felt the next day, even after just two glasses of wine. Now I sleep better, and I have more energy and clearer concentration. My blood pressure is lower and my joints aren't as stiff. The best decision I ever made.

After I lost my daughter last August I drank heavily that whole month. I was drinking about a 24 pack a day. From when I got out of bed to passing out at night with a drink in my hand. It felt so good to be numb to the pain inside of me. Haven’t had a drink since September and thriving mentally and physically.

I quit drinking around 7 months ago. It was time. I’m only 27, but I felt like one of these times I will either end up seriously injured, dead or in jail. The last straw was getting blackout drunk at my ex-gf’s friends wedding. Completely made a fool of myself. I hurt her more than I ever wanted to. I don’t even remember 90% of it, but apparently I was flirty, dancing and getting close with another girl, being mean to and ridiculing my gf at the time. It was so bad she even left without me. I then got even worse, got kicked out of the venue, couldn’t accept it and starting banging on doors, screaming and trying to get in. Ended up even fighting someone too. Ripped my pants, my shirt, I looked like a complete mess. The venue was in the middle of nowhere. I left the place by foot at early morning hours. Walked into random people’s houses… walked on random stranger’s properties… I think I may have got the cops called on me too. I’m not even sure how I made it home alive, and I’m not even sure how my ex-gf took me back. She pretty much did give me an ultimatum, either I stop drinking or we’re done, but by the time I had made it home and had half-sobered-up, I just knew. I had made the decision. That’s it. I’m done. Looking back. The amount of times I’ve been thrown out of clubs/bars, the amount of blackout’s I’ve had, the amount of times I’ve had super close calls to either dying or being seriously injured, the amount of people I’ve hurt, the amount of times I’ve made an absolute fool of myself… Quitting drinking has quite possibly been the best decision of my life. I don’t even bother counting how long it’s been, because I know it’s permanent. There’s no going back, ever. I love being sober. It’s really, really worth it.

@@WoWUndad oh my… I can’t even imagine. absolutely terrible. It would have deeply, deeply hurt me. I’ve thought about that before and I feel so awful about it. The way I hurt her that night was inexcusable on many levels. I honestly didn’t even deserve her back. I should have been dumped then and there. I regret it very, very much and I’m still working on forgiving myself for it. Although I would have never, ever done anything like that being fully conscious of my actions, I don’t blame the booze, I blame myself. I should have known better. I had many, many warning signs prior to that night. I’m someone who considers his loyalty one of his biggest strengths and greatest qualities. And to throw it all away and betray someone because I couldn’t put the drink down? It’s just.. I don’t know. I’m very angry at myself for it. Unfortunately I can’t go back in time and change that, but I do know that I will never, ever put any woman through that again.

Around thirty years ago I had a drinking problem and tried to quit many times. After getting my third DUI I was talking to a friend while driving my car. I had a trip to Mexico go awry due to a “Priveledged Club” wristband and an open-self serve bar with top shelf tequila… stopped drinking after I almost lost my marriage. That was 6 years ago. I’ve dabbled with having a drink maybe once a month .. then got a cancer diagnosis. Thank God I stopped drinking heavily back then or the cancer I now have would have riddled my liver. The main lump was removed from my colon but the cancer still tries to show up in the liver…. And the correlation between when it shows up and when it fades is due to sugar and excess calories. So just like stopping the addiction of alcohol, I had to get off the addiction of sugar. I’ve cut out every bit of excess sugar, including fruit (still eat cheater vegetables like cucumber, tomato avocado that are really “fruits”. And I cut my carbs. Just like getting off the sedation of alcohol, I’m off the sedation from sugar and carbs and I’m clearer and have more confidence and I deal with my problems in a healthier way. PLUS the cancer in my liver had shrunk from only 2 months of diet change. That along with oblation treatment .. may just save my life.

@@kaprinal492 I was told the same thing at around 37. I’m in my 50s now and stopped in Jan of 2020. Yes, it’s bad to drink. I did for 20+ years. But, you can get sober. And everything goes back to normal afterwards. The liver heals. But make no mistake, it’s dangerous to drink. There are many ways to get sober. Try them all. Really. For me switching to recreational marijuana saved my life from alcohol. There are many ways to quit. But, the bottom line, you need to get cut off for about 30-60 days. I became recluse. I have gone on insane diets, meditation, work outs, God, traveled, solo hikes where I gasp for air and pass out. Iv been to about 30 heart doctors, asthma doctors, psychiatrists. Not even Xanax helps. I have fasted and done everything in my power. I have gone weeks without it, even months and the pain is unbearable. I guess I am just writing because I’m happy for you. I go back and forth between drinking and not. I've really got to stop. I've lost so much because of it. But I'm definitely doing better than I was 5 or 6 years ago. My drunkeness caused me to cheat, then lie about it. I lost the woman I love, the mother of my son, that I still love dearly. I let my guard down and my "closest friend" at the time weaseled his way in and lied his own sociopathic lies, and she cheated with him. I'm living in my own personal hell stuck living with my mom, bout an hour away from all my friends and children, and any hope of rekindling a relationship with my son's mom... Avoid drinking.

As someone who rarely drinks, it's frustrating that so much of our society is built around drinking. If I want to go out and do something, be around people, be social, after 5pm (when the coffee shops close) the only option is the bar. Yes, I can go to the bar and not drink, but I'm still interacting with people who are drinking. More outing options beyond the bar would go a long way.

Having spent my early childhood (left at 12) growing up with my mother & step-father (both alcoholics) and experiencing abuse that still affects me today (I'm 71... that's not a typo) My sister died young from complications from heroin and her son (who was adopted by these 2 same monsters), ended up killing my step-father with a hammer. (50+ years ago) It was never investigated as a crime, but ruled an accident (my mother lied to authorities) saying that my step-father died after hitting his head on a curb. My mother died in her mid 50's of cirrhosis of the liver and jaundice. I struggle with alcohol and very close to stopping and hoping this video gives me the strength to accomplish this. I have nothing but respect for Dr. Peterson... thank you for ALL your talks, they are always excellent.

The extra cortisol release when not drinking makes absolute sense and another talking point for myself to use when I get stressed and "need a drink". If I buy any alcohol I continue to drink until it's gone (exactly like you said about not wanting to "plateau". I kicked pain meds as well a few years back and only use alcohol... One aspect of my drinking to handle stress (my mother used to give my sister and I cakes & candy) whenever times were a nightmare in our household causing weight problems for both my sister and I, which we replaced with drugs & alcohol later on. Never was able to understand my trigger points for stress and how to deal with them without self medicating... ALWAYS an excuse for me. Understanding that I could never have good friends until I learned to be friends with myself first... to be alone with myself and my thoughts without panicking = turning to drugs/alcohol to assuage these panic attacks was a revelation. I've been alone since 2013 and never been happier (I drove every woman crazy) and now workin on kicking my substance abuse problems. Better late than never..? Thank you for any and all kind thoughts in advance. (sorry for such a long story)

Your life has not been easy, but take the strength of perseverance of what you had to go through and use it as a fuel to light up your life. Try to stop for a month Dave and see how you feel and take it from there. You can do it and and after a month you will see and think with a clearer head. It's very hard to quit but it is much harder to live with the consequences and the regret that comes from alcohol. I wish you good luck. You got this. Stay strong 💜

I stopped drinking 4 years ago. The consequences I experienced are not the obvious. I never missed being drunk or the feeling of being drunk, actually the body forgets that pleasure... i replaced that with exercise, which the body also forgets how good it feels when you stop exercising.... The consequences i felt were social. I tried to go the the regular events i used to go, the experience and the connection with 'friends' was never the same. With time i no longer got invitations. I wasn't part of the circule no more. i got lonely. The amount of extra time I now have is ridiculous. I went from (on weekends) waking up at noon, feeling good by 3-4pm to waking up fresh at 7-8AM... what do you do for those 8 hours when all your friends are still hang over? You reconstruct your live. I am healthier than ever, look better than ever but it doesnt bond well on a social scale. I learned to be alone and be happy, proud of myself with no one around. I do have a fantastic girlfriend, shes my go to on any giving situation. But i cant even hang out with her friends and their drunken boyfriends hahahahaha waste of time!

These loads of "life changing" videos to stop alcohol, caffeine, sugar , for a lifetime...it would be nice to see a video where the protagonist consumes a healthy amount of alcohol or coffee or sugar and that's obviously changed his life! I live a pretty healthy lifestyle, with lots of activities, clean food, and in measure and occasionally I consume some good red wine, fresh beer, some sweet, and a good cup of coffee. Mostly I experienced that real pleasure is in moderation. I'm convinced, you don't have to say never to these things,. Be conscious, enjoy life.

I can still enjoy a beer now and then but it feels more earned when I do. For me the dojo is a more fullfilling social enviroment then any bar could be. Annie Grace wrote a book called the 30 day alcohol experiment. It's NOT a 12 step program - It's a non-judgemental way to see how you feel when you remove alcohol from your life. I averaged a six pack of beer a week and rarely drank more than 2 in a sitting. But it was regular. That was 6 weeks ago. I sleep a bit better and generally feel pretty good. Continuing my "Dry January" into the spring. Maybe I'll drink socially in the future. We'll see. It also saves money 💰 and keeps empty calories out of your diet.

His diet consisted of Campbell soup, ice cream, about 20 cigars, coffee and a bottle of Maker's Mark a day. He still was driving at 110 years old.

My dry date was December 15 2018. I'm over 4 years sober and yes guys I was sent to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings by the courts. The reason I am clean and sober is because I never went back to my old friends. This was a year before the first Covid-19 infection was found in China. If I can do it, so can all of you! God bless you all. And may God guide us. Amen.

@@AffluentPrinciples1 Yeah for real man. I'm not saying they're evil. Some of them wanted me stop but they weren't ready yet to stop. Thankfully a small handful have slowly quit aswell. It's the stigma of being labeled an "alcoholic" that is shameful, as if you are weak. The last step for me was to research all negative affects of alcohol, and this was a reminder. Thank you.

I gave up on alcohol 18 months ago. And ever since i experience that so much in our society evolves around alcohol. And how weird is that? Its toxic, its a drug. Why do we feel the need to be drunk?

After years of drinking on a daily basis. 12-15 beers everyday led to a pint of bourbon and a 6 pack. I got tired of waking up in a fog and decided to just stop. November 2021 was my last one and the urge went away alone time ago. My mental being is just better off without alcohol entirely.

Last summer I decided to quit drinking completely for the rest of the year to show a good example to someone close to me. Alcohol has never been a problem for me and I don't consider myself being addicted to, so it really surprised me how much quitting affected my well being. I'm way more happy now, I sleep better and life simply feels better and seems to have more colour to it. Year changed, no drinks. Now we're in march and still none. I don't believe that I would never again have a glass of wine etc, so I could do it, but I simply haven't been feeling like wanting to drink any alcohol. I like my life and myself more without it, so I guess I will continue on this path without any alcohol even though some people might think I've become boring. For me partying or even just relaxing with alcohol seems more boring though 😄

I quit alcohol for good in 1978. The drink drive penalties were my stated reasons but since I've always been contrary the real reasons were that I didn't want to socialise with drunks, smokers and gamblers. My real friends pursued their hobbies after work as did I . The world is far more interesting without clouded vision.

My problem with Alcoholics Anonymous was the never-ending recitations of drunkalogues and no examination of deeper issues. There's one sentence in their "Big Book" that says that they're drinking is but a symptom of bigger problems, but all their spoken language in meetings and in their literature points to alcohol being the center of their problems instead of examining the actual problems that they're drinking over. Every time I would speak about actual core problems I felt like I was the odd man out. Their fixation on the alcohol or the drugs only always made me feel like I was in "The Devil Made Me Do It" meetings. Personal accountability, at best, they only take a portion of the responsibility.

Interesting! You would think with AA being a support group that they would want you to get to the root of the issue. I truly believe in accountability! Have you ever heard of the book The Body Keeps Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma? It helps get to the root of the issues and can help heal. Best wishes!

Fantastic insight 👍 I'm 2 months without alcohol (was on 3 bottles a night easily) still have strong cravings but I have the willpower for that, but what's worrying me is I don't feel any better physically or mentally for quitting and mentally I seem to have a lot of brain fog and lack of enthusiasm in general going on. Hope it passes and I see the benefits soon.

I started a medication call Antibuse. It makes you sick if you drink. Very very sick to be exact. My drinking got so out of control and I literally couldn’t stop. There would be times when it felt like my body was driving me to the liquor store and not my mind. I feel free now knowing I cannot drink while on this medication. For someone who is truly struggling ask your doctor. You’re not alone with this people.

For forty years I'm sure I drank at least 8 to 16 beers every day. Sometimes I could go through a case in a day. Well out of nowhere, I decided I'd had a enough. I quit cold turkey. The first three days were rough but I got through it and never looked back. My doctor said my liver is fine. I was shocked. I figured my liver would be damaged beyond repair. I just retired. Now I get out in the sun and work to sweat. Mostly, all I drink is pure water with lemon. I feel so much better and I look so much better. I thank God for a clean liver and that I never got a DUI.

Stopped drinking alcohol on the 26th of December 2018. It changed my life dramatically. Within 1 year I had paid off 16k of debt, bought an apartment, found a job I liked, improved my relationships with my parents and even placed first for my age group in a local triathlon. Alcohol holds you back from your true potential

I used to drink 1-3 beers daily for 5 years and now my body is rejecting badly alcohol. Down to 2 cups of wine a week just on saturday and woking to cut it off totally. It is true. Even alcohol users feel the huge difference when no drinks at all. Any one struggling just take the desicion, is the best thing.
