As a courtesy to other gymgoers, I just leave the weight on the barbell so it's ready for the next person after I'm done doing bicep curls in the squat rack.

@@TartarianTopG It honestly wouldn't be out of the question for a new lifter. It would increase your grip strength giving you more control on the bar, all with greater muscle activation across your body. There is white paper research confirming that.

What convinced me to change after ages of doing it the “wrong way” is just to not have D-bags think I’m a novice when I lift more then them. I never went to the gym to make things easier for myself anyhow.

No he is trying to teach you something. Just like it is proper etiquette to put the dumbbells back on the rack when you are finished and the barbell loaded with weights shouldn’t be left out in the middle of the gym. And leave the cell phone in your locker and quit checking your Facebook or instagram or tweeter account for 5 minutes between sets. It’s a gym not Starbucks.

I think it is easier getting it off of the rack "backwards" because the way he shows it, you have less grip on the pickup because it is angled away from the lip. You're going against gravity and optimal angles. When he takes it off of the barbell, it is the other way which optimizes grip. Either way doesn't really matter because you have to make compromises either way, so it really doesn't matter.

i agree. he also a rack my gym doesn't have, the weights being at an angle. with the rack being parallel to the floor, its really easy to grab the plate with 8 fingers and transfer directly to the bar, the front of the plate facing away from you the whole time

I was actually taught this without an explanation and naturally intuitively do this. It is at the point where the weights the other way “feels funny” because my peripheral vision would see something it wasn’t supposed to see! It was never explained but muscle memory makes me do it like this every time. Thanks to my coach who showed me the right way and thanks for exposing why!

I was at Gold's Gym and always noticed this one dude who just hung around and occasionally wiped down the benches and equipment. Then went back to sitting down and chillin' on his phone. I got to talking to him one day and asked what he does and he says he makes $15 an hour to clean the equipment and rerack the weights left on unused equipment. I haven't racked a weight since to give that guy stable work.

At the gym where I work out, I am lucky if anyone even returns weights. My first place to look for plates is the floor.

In the UK we have employed an even safer measure to not hurt yourself and significantly decrease the chance of injury in the gym. We set up the bar, load up the weight, and when we're done we just walk away. No de-rack, 50% less chance to injure.

Good point. I have been taking the plate off the rack correctly, but then I have been flipping the plate around to put it on the bar with the numbers facing outwards for years. Now I know better, and see how dangerous the incorrect way of doing it could be. One sweaty hand and that is it.
