As an avid fanfic reader (send help) my literal favorite things is when longtime hiatus old stories that I forgot existed get updated. As an AO3 author, a few things have happened to me that stopped me updating: (edit: my wrist bones got rearranged twice on the 23rd Dec and I am now in a cast. Jinxed it ffs) - Hospitalised with Covid - In the middle of the North Sea on a small traditionally rigged sailboat in 40 knot winds and 6 metre waves - British - Having a seizure - Finding out I have a neurological disorder - Just fucking passing out randomly - Couldn't sit at my desk and could only watch YT whilst pacing back and forth And probably more, but I can't remember. I feel like every fic that goes over 100k the universe must balance it out with some kind of disaster in my real life.

One time I updated the same day my dad deliberately illegally parked us right next to some trolly tracks RIGHT outside a parking garage and we were all screaming at him to please please park anywhere else in fact if we leave the parking garage within 15 minutes we won't even have to pay the five dollars, he started screaming at us, and then my life flashed before my eyes because a trolly went by, less than an inch beside my window. if it were just one inch closer i would have had injuries and the trolly would have crashed. anyways, he kept parking us pretty much ON trolly tracks after that for the rest of the day no matter how much terror we were in and i updated my fic when we finally got to the hotel where we all shared one single room

Message to all ao3 authors or writer on platforms that don’t reward you as much: Many people really appreciate you. Your writing inspires entertains… entertains, and save some people. Awhile ago I was going through some shit and contemplating some… less than favorable stuff I was bored one day and started going through ao3 found a fic where the author put a character into a similar situation that I was in and the other characters gave that person some… really good advice. It ended up having the two ending types of things and that really made me take a step back and asked myself what the fuck I was thinking. It really helped me. Now that we’re over with the cringe section I just want to say the actual message to the authors, editors, beta readers, etc. don’t be afraid to take breaks, indulge in things that you want in your writing and in your life, and let yourself feel. This goes for anyone who’s still reading this shit. Whether you’re the average non-content creating person or if, especially if you’re a content creator. Let comments get to you. Don’t bottle things up. Share what you want. Share whatever you feel necessary. It’s all part of growing. Take criticism however you take it. It’ll help you. Don’t just push past all of the hate or negativity, take it with you and grow from it. Everyone needs the dirt and the grime to truly grow. I’m saying this because there are SO many people struggling and hiding it and bottling it all up. It’s better the let it out. Not necessarily let it go, it’ll never truly leave you no matter how hard you try, but it helps. I hope I didn’t bore anyone to tears. This is already quite long. Take care of yourselves in all the ways you can. Drink water. Eat some of your favorite foods if you can. Go outside. Take a break after reading this to look around you and take in everything that has gotten you to this. And just be. That’s enough. You are valid. Your feelings, fears, everything. You are enough.

Oh my God, i remember reading this one fic, where the main character was a fic writer and his after not updating for a while he came back with this gem: "As some of you noticed, updates stopped for a bit. I am not apologizing for that. I had to be talked out of smuggling my best friend out of the country because a certain group of people wanted him dead. We are currently crashing at my beta's place while we sort that issue out. It seems I write under stress so when I can I'll update. If the updates stop completely, I'm probably dead."

As an AO3 author who's currently writing back on a smut that's been paused for like a semester, The things that got me unable to continue my fic for so long was : - Mom got cancer, twice. In and out the hospital multiple times. Me acting as her caretaker. - I was diagnosed with a genetic hormonal condition that may or may not make me infertile. - was also diagnosed with depression and excessive tiredness and stress. And oh my eye sight was getting worse by the year, as i might go blind. - Got my car hit by a massive water truck. Didn't die, but massive wreck to my dad's car door. - Found out dad cheated behind my mom's back with another wife he secretly had, while mom was in pain. That's about it, i think??. And oh- i also found out that the women in my mother's bloodline wouldn't live long enough to pass their 50s-60s. So yeah, that also includes me. So idk, I'm just going on with my positivity, trying my best in life. Enjoying the smut i made while seeing the reaction of other people in the comments section.

2:02 be gay do crime i write on my phone, mostly (it's just more convenient, fight me). it's really well suited to keeping the flow for poetry. it kinda feels closer to handwriting than a computer, i think because it's more tactile, but unlike pen and paper it has useful tools like backspace, autocomplete and autocorrect (which can both be hindrances at times too), and copy/paste. especially if i'm using slide typing, since it's generally much faster and is even more similar to the motions of writing. also for stories and worldbuilding it's good for jotting down ideas and drafts. i only move stories to my computer for formatting, if it's a serious fic or original work. nine times out of ten though, when i use my computer to write, it's for professional/academic work (like essays and resumes). this might kinda be because on keyboards i type chaotically as fuck. like i'm not a full on pointer finger typer, but i definitely don't have designated places for my fingers on the keyboard lol. also my left hand isn't as dexterous as my right, so i guess using my phone solves that problem? idk
