That's awesome that you got to go to one of my favorite coffee joints! If you're ever in Fremont in the Old Niles District (Old Charlie Chaplin films were made there), coffee is on me! Hint: There's only one coffee shop there.

Thanks for sharing Chris! Shortly before Christmas last year, I had started working at a coffee shop down the street from where I live. I've never enjoyed a customer service interaction more than I did there. I abosulutely loved sharing my love for coffee with every guest that walked through that door. I ended up quitting the coffee shop shortly after for various reasons. I feel like I can be most myself and express myself best when I'm behind a brewer at home, brewing for guests and talking them through the process.

The time where I feel most of my ideal self is when I brew coffee on my V60. I like the experimentation and exploration of different techniques and coffees especially when I enjoy the results. I'm no barista, though I want to be one soon, but I get to share my experiences with my barista friends and to the roasters where I get my coffee. Coffee, more specifically third wave and specialty coffee, has given me new purpose in life. I've been stuck to a day job that I didn't want but it pays all the bills including my specialty coffees and the trainings I need to be better in this new passion of mine. Coffee is more about empowerment of one's soul, my soul. It's also a language that we get people to communicate with. Thanks Chris for sharing the knowledge and the passion. Keep it up. 👍😊👍

Chris this video speaks to me so much. I ended up dropping out of university, doing history as my degree, and floated around in hospitality. Having worked my way through the ranks of a successful pub/restaurant I slowly discovered my passion for coffee, learning and teaching myself as much as I could. A week ago, I left that job and am now working as a barista in a speciality coffee shop in London, and I know it's early days, but I have a good feeling about this. Love the content, keep it up, and hopefully I will be sipping on some Cat and Cloud some time soon. Peace.

Fucking love this honesty. Cannot agree more with following what makes you feel like you. I'm on my way out of a 10+ year submersion in the music industry (family stuff - real life comes first), and I'm glad its at a time that I'm working at one of London's best coffee shops, as I've managed to find something else that makes me feel as awesome and fulfilled as touring the world and recording songs I love with my best friends made me feel. Always so stoked to see you putting your truth out there for the world to see, and can only hope it encourages others to be as true with themselves as you are to your audience. Keep it up dude!

In right there with you dude. I’ve said for years that I’m most confident and most genuinely myself when I’m behind the bar. When I’m behind that bar I feel as if I can achieve anything, but the second I step foot in a different environment I get awkward and unsure of myself. I do wish that I had something else besides my job where I could feel as comfortable like you have with skating, but I haven’t quite found that yet. Thanks for sharing your story!

I have two semesters of college left. I can't say that college itself has provided any value to me. Not the classes. Not the potential degree. However, the mere question that comes up when going through college, "College sucks so much. I hate it. What else could I be doing?" is what is really valuable.

Good video. In 2018, I backpacked in SE Asia for four months. Later, I read a book about vagabonding and discovering who you are when the world back home isn't applying expectations and you are not worrying about a job or bills. All you can be at the moment is your authentic self. It was an important lesson: to always be your authentic self when you finally go back home.

Chris, this really hits home. Some months ago I had just quit college and was at what I think was the lowest point of my life. Much like you said, I thought I didn't really fit anywhere. I always enjoyed coffee but had never heard of specialty until I found about James Hoffmann videos and yours. I was stoked about finding a new hobby but then one day I decided to go to a barista course that was near me. Feels weird to say but that kind of changed my life just from one day to the other. I felt like I found myself and a place where I could really be myself and have the energy to put the effort to get better. I'm just starting out, but I've never really felt so sure about what I want to do with my life. I don't know yet exactly how I fit in this coffee crazy world, but I'm damn sure I'm gonna be a part of it. So thank you Chris for being such an inspiring person. Cheers from Argentina!

Awesome video Chris. The answer to your question, "when do I feel most like myself?" is working as a pastor of my small church. I gave up my engineering career to do it. My parents weren't impressed. It is less money, more stressful, more consuming...but it makes me so much happier. It is something I'm passionate about. Definitely bad days still. But it feels like I was made for it.

My safe space where I really feel like myself is when roasting coffee. It was my hobby, now it's my work, but still I feel the same joy and passion as the first day when I started the journey. The work you and Matt put together is outstanding and I feel that I find a bit of myself in both of you now that I know both your stories. Grew up a loner. Lost in college. Didn't exactly finish. Found myself in coffee and 10 years later in Niles, Fremont, I am still behind the bar and loving it. Being less than an hour from Cat and Cloud, I feel spoiled having the ability to visit. However, with the pressures of life and expectations, I sometimes find myself questioning whether it's right to be doing what I'm doing. Have you ever had those moments since you've been in coffee? If so, what did you do about it? Feeling a bit lost. Thank you for doing what you do, Chris! Much love!

For me, I feel that I’m my most true authentic self at my cafe. I work at a small cafe in PA that just feels like home. Not necessarily the people I work with or the location (even though they’re also amazing), but the coffee and how it’s a fuel for people’s creativity and hard work. I’ve learned to love and enjoy the small things working with coffee. It takes time to be a good barista. Making drinks as a barista is an art form I thoroughly enjoy. It’s an art trying to find or make the perfect roast, the perfect grind, the perfect pull of a shot, the velvet milk, right amount of flavor. You’re creating this drink for people to enjoy and become revitalized and it makes me feel amazing. I’m inspired to run my own cafe one day. I look up to you for how far you’ve come with coffee, and finding yourself in the crema of it all 😂💛🥰

I like how you said that nothing felt as right as skateboarding. 32 now and I’ve been skateboarding since I was 13 (decided to start when I randomly watched the ‘99 xgames and saw tony hawk land the 900) and without it, nothing felt right. Sad to say, but I haven’t skated in about a year as some life changes kind of interfered, but I’ve been itching to set up the new local shop deck I bought back in January and just get after it again. What’s cool is I feel like skateboarding led me into being into coffee. There’s just that DIY aspect of it coffee and brewing that I love that I learned to love with skateboarding.

Coffee became a passion at a young age since my grandfather was a small coffee producer in Panama, Boquete Chiriqui, I’m a coffee enthusiast and ocasional blogger @awakepma and I understand your 30 days without coffee because I myself like not losing myself or my senses to anything in life.
