I got sick almost 6 years ago with a spinal cord injury and overnight lost everything that made me, me. My career that I loved, my marriage I felt safe in, how to walk, etc, etc. Two years ago my 75 year old mother moved me in with her after I decided that, as you said, there was no reason for me to go on anymore. While living in her spare room has helped me crawl a little bit out of that hole, I still have a long way to go. 3 weeks ago I decided I had to make a drastic change and find a new life, or all her efforts would just fail. I decided that while I am in bed and in pain 4 days out of 7, and I can't really walk at the best of times, why not at least move my bed on those days when I can drive? If I'm going to lie here isolated and alone except for my wonderful mother and son, why not be isolated and alone looking at a different view every few days? So. I've sold my condo, bought a small Class C, and will head out in 2 weeks to see whats next with my fingers and everything else crossed. Three things though: a, I have a Disability pension which is not dependant on my location and b, I'm Canadian so medical coverage isn't an issue and c, I live on the farthest West Coast so I don't get snow and the scenery of this island is staggeringly beautiful. Despite each of these, I'm still terrified, but if I keep monkey barring I'm going to dislocate a shoulder and get a concussion as I knock myself out from the fall. Thank you for listening and understanding.

Ms. Casey, I watched your video and was cheering you with great advise in it's entirety! I had a stressful honorable career in Law Enforcement, retired at 46 y/o after 25 yrs. I was fried. Yes, I had the parachute of a pension and medical for the rest of my life. I am Blessed and lucky. However, I also needed to, like you said, plan for the "next chapter of my life". Very important! I did and I'm happy to report, I'm not a millionaire BUT who I am is fully back and happy after seeing humanity at it's worst everyday. Again, great video, excellent advise and THANK YOU! You are so spot on. I was working for a company I literally hated for 7 years. I was getting my degree so I had a better chance of landing a better job so I was “building that runway”. During this time, my Dad passed away, my Mom had to be institutionalized due to her Altzheimers. It was a rough time. The strange thing that happened, though, was that I got laid off a week after I had been there for 7 years. This meant I got 100% of my IRA. YEAH!!! I actually thanked my boss for letting me go. They were so shocked. I just sat there and laughed while cleaning out my desk. Best day ever!!! Since that time, I have actually been able to enjoy life again.

I need to wait till I'm getting some of my social security. I'm a single mom, my paycheck mostly goes to rent, can't save, struggle to buy food. Have benefits at work, can't afford to participate. Haven't had a raise in 4 years. Need to be in school zone. Some things are slowly falling into place. But not sure how long my mental stability will last at this job, I'm burnt out.

I worked at a high salaried corporate job that I knew I didn’t resonate with. I kept feeling like the job I had wasn’t my “real” job, that I was occupying someone else’s job. One day during a meeting when other people were excitedly problem solving, I realized that I couldn’t even pretend to care anymore. About four months after that, I quit. Before I did, I made sure that I had enough in the bank to survive for at least a year or so, until I could figure out what I was here to do. During that time, my house got caught on fire forcing me to sell, which felt more of a relief to me than anything tragic. Now 4 years later, I created my own business and very excited to work on it each day.

Thank you for sharing!! Been there. Tried explaining to folks - they just don’t get it. Realize now, i don’t have to explain, my monkey, my circus, my life. Other people - buttout!! So yes, been there. Done that. I am there again. :( I fear letting go of that monkey bar ... i think i need a few more swift breezes and i’ll just fall off into the abyss. Having a weak immune system and my job that is killing me mentally is playing havoc on me physically. Take care. Stay strong! Much success to you.

This was perfect! As we watched it, my husband looked over at me and asked - is that how you felt? I just started crying - you captured it perfectly. I worked 20 years teaching Science and devoting my all to the school and the community. I had wanted to leave for years (I loved the kiddos; hated the politics) but felt trapped with a mortgage to pay and no other income. I planned my exit and it took about a year to implement - quit my job, sold my house and moved somewhere cheaper and nicer but with no job and no plan - just took the leap because I knew I couldn't do it anymore. Not once did the admin acknowledge me and my 20 years of service to the school, thank me or wish me well - I was sooo hurt but the best part is I left and am now living my best life.

I hear you. I worked at a job for years (YEARS) trying to make it work. I finally decided to take a mental health break, and then was in two car accidents. I was forced to give up on my job, I could no longer do, concentrate on getting better, take a long look back. I should have left my job so much earlier. I wasted my life trying to get recognition from a job that didn’t care who did the job or what I did to get it done. It was heart wrenching. My life’s purpose was put into my job to get self satisfaction and approval. I look back and I worked other than banking good friends and relationships, creating my own family and amazing experiences. PEOPLE PLEASE DONT DO THIS. If something happens to you, your job will replace you with someone cheaper. Work your 9-5 but run out at the end of the day and on weekends and create an amazing life that will continue when you are no longer working or change jobs. Casey I agree with everything you say in this video. I am fortunate to have great healthcare in Canada. I do have personal health care too, but I know that anything that doesn’t pick up, everything else is covered. Still trying to find my side hussle. Thank you for your videos. Hope to see your photo excursion videos.

As happened in the job you left, almost always a "bad job" is caused by people not the work itself. There are exceptions, but in most cases the stress-inducing part is caused either by your co-workers or, in consumer facing businesses, those irrational customers that you must interact with.

So I got really sick, missed lots of work, and they eventually let me go. I’m applying for SS Disability now. Life is a struggle and I don’t see anything good happening to me. I know it feels so hopeless at times but you have to concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other and move forward.sure some days suck but when that happens for me I try to see what things I do have that I can count as blessings. Even if it’s a pretty cloud in the sky or a kid laughing. What it comes down to Sue is don’t give up things do get better maybe just not what you want but life is never stagnant. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Once I had to walk into the bosses office, throw the key on his desk, and say right to his face, "Take this job and stick it where the sun don't shine" of course I paraphrased that too clean it up. I did it for their protection... very close to going postal over a minimum wage job as I had ran out of unemployment and had a wife and 2 kids to feed. Was scared to death, but it had to be. 24 hrs later, after a trip to the unemployment office where they said i could go out to this ore mine 65 miles away where they hadn't accepted any of 14 applicants the office had already sent to them. End of story, I was hired at almost twice the pay of what I walked out on with a good future ahead of me. Moral of the story: life will go on, one way or another it will all work out.

You are spot on about setting up your living expenses before jumping ship (like having good insurance in place and leaving debt-free). If you will need to move just know ahead of time that cost a lot of money, plan for it. I fell into early retirement (everyone's dream?) and practiced living on no money for months before I left my career. I paid off all my debt and put the excess into over-funding my 401k and for 6 months and learned to live on $800/month for a family of 2 to prove it was possible to survive with a plan on nothing. (Supporting 2 on $800/month is living on nothing.) Now I am having so much fun, I can't decide whether to continue working or stay retired forever.

If you get lucky and stumble into a career that is highly rewarding, realise you will need and exit plan, when you are eligible to retire. There is so much to do, see, learn and enjoy, your responsibilities are met, you have given your children a great start, your investments should see you to the end of your life. I went on a solo adventure, backpacking and at the end of it, l had broken all the habits that jobs and careers require. My requirnments for a happy life, shifted. I don't need things, or acceptance. Experiences let you grow, change, reevaluate, live and thrive. My husband has never executed an exit plan and sadly he has never really left the job he retired from 4 years ago. Thank you for this great video. I feel most people knew a lot of planning and work went into your career change. Safe travels.

My only advice is to do all you can while you have good hearing and especially eyesight. While those are still good you can get along with some older age physical problems while doing what you want to do. Dad (90+) says old age isn't the golden years, not having drivers license and being able to travel on your own. Another half hour well spent with Casey while she is filling in the tough stuff others leave out. Take care Casey and I know you will be doing the best you can in your new real estate career and adventures.

Just starting watching this; I'll have to catch up on your videos, I hadn't been getting notifications. Weren't you going to be doing a documentary? Glad you're going to be a real estate agent; my sister & her granddaughter are getting into that field; even though my sister is "retired" and currently working at an accountant's office. Your logic makes perfect sense! I've been working at a cheese factory; pay is good, but I don't really want to be there! I'd love to be able to hit the road & travel, but I'm kinda trying to look out for my youngest (27) son right now. Hoping to be able to do it when I retire in 3 years; if not before.
