this was the insight i was looking for, because instinctively my first thought was why would his father be opposed to his son following behind his grandfather and father’s footsteps? (if my memory serves me correctly i believe the rock’s grandfather also wrestled) however after reading your comment it instantly dawned on me that his father had to endure politics of a business that is televised on top of being a black man during an era where the politics of race in the country as a whole was no where near a position of true peace and stability as far as true equality which imo i don’t think even now we have 100 percent reached that threshold nor will we ever, so i can only imagine what it was like back then for his father and family! shout out to dwayne rock johnson for chasing his dream fulfilling the legacy his father started and coming out the other end on top is all i can say! i salute him! 🫡

@realitythatdreams2940 he and Tony Atlas caught hell back then, but was always expected to turn the other cheek, smile and accept whatever thrown at them, not only from bigoted fans but others wrestlers as well. Naturally his first thought was he wanted more for his son, but he was there to help guide him

@@bigb2494 i could only imagine the amount of hate and pointless criticism thrown their way back then, like i said at first i was like why? then i almost felt dumb because the light bulb went off and instantly thought of the era and times and was like ya what father would want to see their son endure the same pain, but because of his dad he not only prevailed he thrived in the industry and his pops paved that lane so i’d say rock made a solid choice and his dad did great job of guiding prepping and mentoring his child! definitely a awesome story and turnout all around!

@@realitythatdreams2940 exactly. It's cool, I've seen some documentaries and while I respect what they all put their bodies through I lost some respect for a few for how they freely spouted hate towards these guys, but if they stood up for themselves they weren't allowed to work or labeled troublemakers. I remember watching Tony Atlas as a kid and hearing fans make monkey noises as he walked to the ring. I also saw Rocky Johnson when wore a mask and wrestled under the alias Sweet Ebony Diamond and things people would yell at him, right in front of their kids. Sad to say, it's how hate and ignorance is passed on.

I went to see a WWF wrestling match in the early 2000s and I brought my sign to hold up, of course. It said, "Happy Birthday, Dwayne Johnson!" This was before anyone knew who Dwayne Johnson was. Everyone knew him as The Rock. Sure, his hardcore wrestling fans knew his name like I did. But I remember thinking that not too many people at that EVENT would even know/recognize that I was saying happy birthday to The Rock, and they were wrestling fans. Now he is known to the world as Dwayne Johnson. Just one of those weird things I think about from time to time, if I happen to see a wrestling video of The Rock

I used to watch his dad and Pat Patterson wrestle as a kid in the 70's. Rocky Johnson is legend!

I would cry if I met him. Not because he’s a celebrity, but because he’s my childhood. I love seeing shorts of him!

I stumbled across a wrestling channel one day when Dwayne was still The Rock. He was having so much fun being the bad guy. He was snarling but his eyes were laughing. It took me about three seconds to figure out that he was going places ❤

He made the right choice, but I don't blame his dad. He knew how dangerous wrestling is. It may all be choreographed, but that still sometimes goes horribly wrong. Of course the other option, football, also sometimes leads to similar horrible injuries. Fortunately Dwayne did an amazing job.

Yeah, he made the right choice in hindsight but at the time of this conversation. The Rock that we know now, did not exist. It's important to keep that in mind.

His dad was right to be concerned and worried about the decision.... he was also right to come around and support him when he showed how serious he was about it

I do miss the og The rock. He didn’t stay the same people’s champ. He changed like everyone else did.

Seeing a YT Short with The Rocks face and then hearing Wally Buono's name in the same short is definitely one of the most random things ever
