The Wankel engine, also known as a rotary engine, was designed by German engineer Felix Wankel in 1924, but the patent for his design was only approved five years later, in 1929. During the following three decades, Felix continued to improve his revolutionary creation - a combustion engine without cylinders and with great simplicity of design that constituted a significant improvement in relation to traditional designs in terms of smooth operation, contained noise and great robustness, as well as very little propensity for breakdowns -, having presented the definitive version in 1957.
