To be honest, it took more than a year for grunge to take over. It wasn't until 1993 when grunge really took over pop culture. Def Leppard still had hits in 1992.

From what I remember at the time seeing this on TV, he seemed like a shy person - this was after the final nomination when the group won the annual video award. Tarsem previously appeared on stage (the video won several nominations) and hardly said a modest "thank you" and stormed off stage... so it wasn't like he minded the REM talking instead :)
