The "Bazz Lightyear" thing sort of makes sense. In Japanese, the english letter "u" is pronounced like "yu" or "oo", so "buzz" would be said like "byuzz" or "boozz", there isn't an "uh" sound like we would use in "buzz" to make it sound like "buhzz". The closest sound in the Japanese language would be the "a", pronounced like "ah", so like "Bahzz Lightyear".

8:56 The image made me think this might be the actual meaning, and as it happens, I speak a fair bit of Japanese. Turns out, this sign is actually _brilliant._ The word for paper is "kami", and for some reason it adds -sama to it, to indicate respect for the toilet paper in question. The reason for this is because it creates a pun. "Kami-sama" can also mean God. So it can either say "Please respect the toilet paper", or "Please respect the Toilet God." So when it talks about the spirit of toilets, it's actually translating it remarkably accurately. It's just the wrong half of a pun that doesn't work in english. That's why the sign shows a Toilet Fairy. Remember to always thank her!

If you're interested in why Japan uses English in such typical but fairly consistent ways, I can highly recommended Abroad in Japan's videos on it. In a nutshell, it's either "decorative English" (so it doesn't matter what it says to anyone, it just looks cool), or it's a mistranslation due to Japanese having a lot of homophones/homonyms and being a very context-heavy language, and therefor doesn't "align" with English .

Translation errors are not that uncommon if you look at the fate series the servants supposed to be influential figures in the history of the series being villains or heroes it’s only the English version that caused them heroic spirits

Russian is pretty up there because it doesn't make any sense as a language. I mean I can turn a verb into another one just using a prefix. And it means an entirely different thing. Like the verb carry. There are so many ways to say you're carrying something you become stupid trying to learn them all. Like carry on a vehicle, carry on your arms, carry using something. You can add a simple prefix and turn the verb give into given to you, handed to you, dispensed etc. There are two main motion verbs. Motion by foot is one verb and motion with a vehicle is another. Oh and you can practically turn anything into an adjective. For italian it's because most of us are lazy asses who don't speak a sentence in English so we slap it on the jankiest online translator. All they had to write was: "Push pedal with foot to run water". Which is a common old way to activate taps in public places. Like restaurants, bars and train stations. Honestly they probably asked their distant nephew down the road who knows a tad more English than them to translate.

Also I wanna point out that the term “engrish” actually comes from Japanese people learning English having trouble making sounds that aren’t in Japanese, just like how English speakers learning Spanish have trouble making the Spanish “rr” sound because English lacks that sound.

I can at least tell for Japanese that the translations are correct, even the funny ones. サンド means sand (phonetically) or is a short version of sandwich. Google might’ve just directly translated it to sand. L and R are identical in Japanese so Onry... yeah. As for Chinese the translations are quite literal as well. Google should have a hard time with food names as well.

If you can imagine Tonkotsu Ramen, and remove the "men" (meaning noodles), then translate it, you'll get "Pork Broth Ra" which is what just happened here.

So i see what happened in the Italian one. The Italian speaker likely didnt speak english fully but did enough for that to happen where they just directly translates each verb and then rearranged the sentence structure like youd expect if you translated it correctly. It should say "press the pedal below to release the water" but each verb directly translated to english because of different conjugation structures translates to "to push" or "to go" or whatnot. Sometimes direct translations of words dont carry over. Just like if you literally translated "its raining cats and dogs" into italian they wont get what you mean because its an English idiom, but it can technically be directly translates.

2:46 I live in Japan, so i know what they were trying to say when they said “Egg Sand”. So basically, Japanese people usually shorten words, often foreign words, so Television become “Televi”, and Remote Controller becomes “Rimocon”. In this case, Sandwich is shortened to “Sando”, but since Japanese letters always have a vowel sound after each consonant sound, I think the person who put the sign removed the “o”, so it became Egg Sand. In other words, Egg Sand is an Egg Sandwich. And yes, everything is overpriced in Japan.
