My grandmother was a fundamentalist Bible believing pro-choice Christian. She always said that no one should be allowed to speak against abortion until they had adopted at least one unwanted child. That rule would certainly shut a lot of people up.
@diablo.the.cheater2 жыл бұрын
That topic is a difficul one to be sure, but at the end of the day it comes to two things, "Where do you put the line between a person and not a person?" and after that "which you value more the freedom of choice or the freedom of future life" "unwanted childs having a hard life" is not really part of the argument, because if that was the case then you will have to start to argue about euthanising orphan babies, if you come to the point to argue that, it means you already made your mind before in where do you put the line between a person and not a person and considered the fetus to not be a person and then made your mind in the other and considered the freedom of choice trumps that of future life. So no need to bring "they will have a bad life" in to the argument, as it is not a point to sway it either way and is a pretty evil way of thinking as it is a less extreme version of "lest pity kill the less fortunate". Someone supporting abortion because they draw the line and say a fetus is not a proper person yet, and then draw the line and say that choice is more important is a morally correct way of thinking, if someone REALLY thinks the problem is that they will have a hard life then that is a shit take. Personally i don't have an opinion on prolife or prochoice, as i am yet uncertain of my position in the 2 important questions, specially the first, it is hard to draw a line between person and not person as i feel it is more of a gradient, you could make an argument that when the DNA is recombined and a full set of DNA that forms a new human is made, that is a new person, you could argue that it is when it take the shape of a person, when the brain starts to form, when the brain starts to have activity, when there is movement and last at birth. Those are the contention points morally/phylosophically speaking, "they will have a bad life/ will be left in an orphanage" is a no point as you could make that same argument about a born baby from a single mother that died at childbirth without living relatives. And if you rather not do it, then it is a not argument as you have clearly made your mind on what is a person and what is not and that is what truly matters.
@antonioscendrategattico23022 жыл бұрын

@spiritmuse2 жыл бұрын
@@diablo.the.cheater Actually, at the end of the day it comes down to *bodily autonomy.* A person cannot be forced to donate an organ, say a kidney or a lung, even to save another person's life. Heck, you cannot take an organ from a *corpse* without express permission from the person in life. Therefore, you cannot force a person to donate their uterus (an organ), much less force them to risk their whole life (a significant percentage of people still die in childbirth) to sustain anyone else's life.
@sable13342 жыл бұрын
@@diablo.the.cheater There are a lot of philosophical inflection points here, but most people find it very hard to consider a tiny lump of cells anything like a person or a baby to not be at least a sort-of person. Maybe drawing this line based on intuition is a bad idea, but a more rationalist ethical approach quickly comes to radical conclusions. Most mammals are more people than foetuses are, so the meat industry needs to be abolished and predators supplied with birth contol and meat substitutes. Mandatory organ donation. Sleeping people have no intelligence and thus no rights. We have to come up with ethical recommendations that are actually practical and make our world a better place. A casual look at the statistics says that making abortion easily accessible does a great deal of good.

The "tiny" electric eraser is mostly used by artists. Of course on a regular basis you don't need it because it's too small etc, but as an artist you sometimes just want to erase a very tiny dot or line without also damaging the art around that part. And with a non-electrical eraser you need a certain amount of space to get the friction you need, if it vibrates you don't, and you can therefore erase stuff more precisely. @@midnight_blue_moon awful take 😅 For example, I became a fantastic student in college once I was able to be around professors I researched and chose myself, because I knew they would care and not scream abuse at me like most teachers up until that point had. Not all of my k-12 teachers were bad, but I can count on one hand the amount that cared and didn't despise their job and take it out on vulnerable children. I also sadly was in far right catholic private schools up until college, so that's also a large factor. As for my behavior around the bad teachers, I just kept my mouth shut and occasionally would "provoke" my teachers wrath by tearing up when the entire class (small classes, and I was very disliked because I was extremely awkward as a child) would start picking on me. I'm a bit prickly when people blame victims of bad behavior from other people though. There is a surplus of horrible teachers, and I don't fucking know why. Maybe they thought it would please their parents who never cared for their children, and that got passed on to the undeserving students. My parents certainly took that path as teachers, at least. All that being said though, the above just increased my love and appreciation for good and caring teachers. I go above and beyond to make sure they feel appreciated and cared for in return. I have one professor who saved my life, and I'm still in contact with him sometimes. Bad teachers ruin lives, but good teachers can save lives. I wish there was more of the latter.
@midnight_blue_moon2 жыл бұрын
@@its_the_bird it's not a take, it's experience. Believe me, I also went through k-12 far right Catholic private school. I also didn't get along with most of my classmates. The teachers have only ever been a problem for the people who don't do their work. I listened to people complain about great teachers and try to say that they were bad at their jobs for *giving work* every day (easy work, mind you). The students in that school were an absolute menace, and literally half the teachers (all the best ones) left after I graduated because they did not get paid enough by the school for the bullshit they had to go through. The only staff at that school that deserved the way the students thought about them were the administrators, who treated both the students and teachers alike terribly. So no, it's not an "awful take," it's just true.

@Blue Oké, mate hold your horses. Now, I don’t know if it’s just the American school system that is fucked to give you that opinion, or you just believe it’s that way. Anyhow, I’m not American, and do not live in America, so I can only talk of MY experience, ok? So, my take on this argument is that underpaid people do get pissed quicker, and as result, they might not be the kindest of all people. And if you don’t give a shit about the student, they won’t have the motivation to do that subject that the teacher teaches. And then you get student that won’t even try to become better, or try to drop the subject as soon as possible. With that said, I hope that you understand, that, in MY experience, if you getter better paid, you’ll will do it with a happier aditut (or however you write that word, don’t care about that now) and your students will most likely like the subject more, become motivated, and well, preform better. And I, bid you a good day. Bye!

Fun fact: In the UK any food packaging and/or labelling that can come into direct contact with the product MUST be "Food Grade". This means it's safe to consume, albeit not likely to have any nutritional value. It's not that you SHOULD eat it, just that IF you do none of the material, ink (which is a special type reserved for use in the food industry) or any glue used will do you any harm whatsoever. This includes things like the paper wrapping around individual Starburst (former name Opel Fruits) sweets, the little labels you find on apples and other fruit/veg, and in THIS country at least - I cannot speak for the US food industry - includes that paper label on the Hersheys Kiss. I'm not sure about any foil that is used, however, need to do more research on that.

Click, the bear spray thing is actually funnier. So in the USA, bug sprays are applied directly to your skin to deter mosquito bites. Basically it's applied like sunscreen, directly on the skin, to prevent bug bites. Bear spray, however, is literally just pepper spray but worse to deter bears. If a bear is charging at you, you're meant to spray the bear in the face, and the irritating painful burning sensation will make the bear leave you alone. So people are applying what amounts to ballistic grade pepper spray to their skin, giving themselves burns and irritation (especially if they apply it to their face or inhale the fumes) trying to apply it like a bug spray. So to recap: Bug spray - doesn't hurt, goes on your own skin to keep bugs from biting you. Bear spray - hurts like hell, goes on the bear to keep it from biting you. Humans who don't read instructions - Injuring themselves trying to use bear spray like a bug spray.

I had a similar discussion with my sisters today about monkeypox. "It's a shame they had to give it such an awkward name." "What, they gave a disease a name based on the animals it infects?" But then they went on to mock swine flu and bird flu for having the same problem. I don't think they get that humans aren't the only species on the planet. Yes diseases can sometimes cross the species barrier, but before they do, they're diseases of those other species. Naming them swine flu, bird flu, or monkeypox is the natural thing to do. It's not a conspiracy theory to denegrate people!
@Netherdan2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but I found it weird because it came after covid. And I remember seeing whole discussions over how the media and the scientific community should stop naming diseases after animals or places to avoid stigmatizing them, like the swine flu or the Spanish flu, and that being the reason they're calling the disease "covid" instead of "bat flu", "Chinese flu" or something like that. What I guess happened is that everyone was so tired of the previous pandemic that when a new one emerged we collectively forgot all about that and went "meh, monkeypox, whatever"

Problem has been that when disease is named after place or group, people have attacked people who are from that place or belong in that group ( like when spanish flu was problem, mexican and other spanish-speaking people were attacked, same with chinese people when covid was called china-virus) or are mistaken to be from that place or to belong in that group... Organizations are inherently eviler than the people who are in them. In our normal life, we don't have a single task to do but many, and life is a constantly balancing act. Organizations assign single tasks to individuals, for example, maximize stakeholders profit, and regard the individual only by his effectiveness in that single task. Higher ups want something done, and middlemen are expected to have that something done, and to not bother higher ups with details.

I came into the office that morning laughing hysterically, because that pay-out is really less than $2 (not $2k... just $2). My co-worker next to me was pretty quiet.
