When Finnish was added to Google Translate, they based it entirely on EU legislative and other formal documents that had trusted translations (in many languages). As such, the more formal the Finnish, the more accurate. That's why it was pretty useless at everyday Finnish. Of course, it has been constantly learning ever since, and people have suggested better translations (for better and worse). It is MUCH better today, though never perfect. It still has tremendous difficulty with gender and makes sexist assumptions about male and female based on the circumstance being translated. They have made headway on this too though, offering 'he/she' sometimes. And let's not get into the US date format translations/assumptions....

2:26 I've always wondered what it's like to try and learn this because learning about it as a native Finn in school was absolutely terrible. I knew what's right spelling but the tough part was why it was right. The absolute horror of naming all forms of word bending...
@TheRawrnstuff2 жыл бұрын
For me, things like this were actually the reason why I fell love with the Finnish language. Obviously the meme highlights the confusing aspect of it, but the Finnish language allows for much more precise communication than English does. "Minä tykkään hänet" is not grammatically wrong, but the meaning is different from "minä tykkään hänestä". With the "hänet-variant", you are making a statement about what you are about to do. "Minä tapaan hänet", "minä merkkaan hänet", "minä katson sarjat", "minä luen lehdet". With the "hänestä-variant", the focus is more on the object of the sentence. In this case, "her". The confusing bit about this is just that the stä-suffix is also used as the linguistic equivalent of "from", making it look like "minä tykkään hänestä" would translate into "I like from her", which is a different (albeit identical) sentence altogether. Comparing Finnish and English makes English look like the quote "Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick?" The difference being, Finnish actually has the fewer words despite the increased communicative precision, as the nuance is in the suffixes and prefixes, instead of completely separate prepositions. One last thing about the meme though. The final correction in the meme is wrong. He should've corrected it into "Suomen kieli on vitun vaikea", not "Suomenkieli on vitun vaikeaa". "Suomen kieli" is two words, "suomenkielinen" is one word. Puhuminen on vaikeaa, kieli on vaikea.
@whazzup_teacup2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRawrnstuff "hänet" implies someone (some people) do something that inflict them so there's why it's incorrect. I don't have a degree in any language but that's the best I could come up with by just thinking.
@TheRawrnstuff2 жыл бұрын
@@whazzup_teacup Very true. "Hänet" implies that "hän's" status/condition undergoes a change of some kind. My point was that the sentence is grammatically correct, if we give "tykätä" a meaning that can be done in a one-and-done fashion. Like clicking the like-button. In that sense, "minä tykkään hänet" would be correct. Obviously, the most likely meaning of "liking someone" isn't in this one-and-done fashion but rather an ongoing process that never really resolves, so it's a very safe bet to say "minä tykkään hänet" is wrong, even when lacking context. But it's not wrong in the "absolute" sense. It's just very, very unlikely to be correct in practice and in real life.
@whazzup_teacup2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRawrnstuff Yeah, and again it's hard for me as a native to think why "hänet" is wrong so thanks for clearing up a bit.
@durabelle2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRawrnstuff And of course it gets even more confusing if we replace the verb "tykätä" with "pitää", which can and often does mean the same thing. "Minä pidän hänestä" means I like her, but "minä pidän hänet" means I'll keep her. Got to love this language.
