My mom, grandma, sister, and I were staying in a hotel in Virginia/West Virginia, and my sister and I were playing around watching the TV. Out of nowhere, this random big, hairy spider (which I would later learn is a wolf spider, one of the few aggressive species) just starts running at us and chasing us all the way to our mom's room, and would thankfully be blocked by the door. Fun fact: the reason why they said don’t stand too close to the TV back in the 80s/early 90s was because the TV released small amounts of radiation. They later discovered a way to make it so that there was no radiation (I think it was the discovery of LEDs but I could be wrong)
@John_Weiss2 жыл бұрын
I grew up in _the 1970s,_ so I know _why_ TVs, "released small amounts of radiation." Which isn't _exactly_ true. Let's get this out of the way now: What _most people_ think of when they hear "radiation" isn't the scientific definition of the word. It's only 3 kinds of radiation: Gamma rays [which is a form of light]; Beta radiation, which are electrons moving near the speed of light; and Alpha radiation, which are an entire helium-nucleus flying around at high speeds. The "radiation" from CRTs would've been those relativistic electrons. Let me explain. Before LED TVs became widespread [laptop and smartphone screens made the underlying tech much cheaper to mass-produce], TVs always used some form of CRT, a.k.a. Cathode-Ray Tube. A Cathode-Ray Tube shoots a beam of electrons at a screen covered in phosphorescent chemicals. Electron hits a phosphor on the screen, it glows. Hit it repeatedly back-to-back, it glows brighter. Different chemicals glow different colors. In the old Black-and-White TVs [which I remember], the electron-beam would fire electrons at the screen [the bottom of the CRT] in a stream, as the beam moved from left-to right, lighting up a line across the screen. The beam then very briefly shut off as it was repositioned back to the left side of the screen, _below_ the line it just made. Lather-rinse-repeat, until the electron beam reached the lower-right corner of the screen. Then it was back to the upper-left-corner, for the next frame of the video. So, the original TVs quite literally painted the image onto the phosphorescent screen line-by-line, each image being a frame of the video stream. The phosphor-coating was just that, a uniform coating that had to glow for less than 1/24 seconds [video needs to be at least 24 frames-per-second for our brains to perceive it as smooth motion]. The first color-TVs … which I _also_ remember … no longer had a single phosphorescent coating. Its coating was divided up into pixels, each with 3 "subpixels" containing different kinds of phosphor, one that glowed red, one green, and one blue. The electron-gun no longer scanned across the screen in a line. It had to shoot at each pixel, hitting each "subpixel" the right amount to get the right combination of red, green, and blue. And, the electron-gun had to aim _at every pixel_ on the screen _in under 1/24 seconds_ so that it could finish the entire frame in time. As a result, the electron-gun not only needed move around faster and with much greater precision, it needed to _fire the electrons much faster._ And as TV screens grew larger and larger, the electrons in the electron-beam needed to be moving _even faster._ By 1990, the electrons were moving so fast in some CRTs, that we needed to use Special Relativity to adjust the electron-beam or the image would come out distorted. CRTs with _relativistic electron_ beams? Yep, we were now painting images, 24 frames/second, using Beta-radiation. Which isn't in-and-of-itself dangerous. The beam only needed to be intense enough to light up those phosphors, which wasn't all that much. Also - glass is transparent _to visible light,_ not to everything. Any stray relativistic-electrons that aren't absorbed by the phosphors will be absorbed in the glass. But again, a very, _very, _*_very small fraction_* of these would get passed the glass. Again: this wasn't something that happened with Black-and-White TVs the earlier color-TVs, and color-TVs with small screens, which used far slower electron-beams. It was the larger TVs and flatter TVs of the 1990s which required the electron-beams to fire their electrons at relativistic speeds.

I remember waking up from a nightmare I had for weeks, nobody was around to help me out of my crib, so I spent 10 minutes slamming into the wall until it tipped over and I could get out. I walked into the hallway and into the living room before I heard my mom yell "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" and the memory stops there with happy birthday echoing in my mind.

My earliest memory was wrapping my teddy bear in a blanket along with a lit table lamp. I wanted to keep Teddo warm. Ooh I love when I get a chance to tell this story. Back when I was 3 or 4, I was visiting the farm where my mum grew up, and playing on the driveway. One of the steers managed to get out of the fenced area and was about 20 feet away. Suddenly my mother, who I must add was heavily pregnant with my brother, ran outside with a rope already lassoed, got the noose on the bull, and it was like a tug of war for 10 seconds until the bovine calmed down. I was just watching in awe. Also one of my favorite memories of her.
@electrowave1142 жыл бұрын
My earliest memory, which is from when I was three years old, was crying to my grandmother and asking why my mother couldn't visit me, while I was on the phone with my mother. (The reason was that my grandmother was trying to abuse the court system to steal me away from my mother. She didn't succeed, and my mother ultimately got me back (and did well raising me), but it was still a two-year court case.) So I gained sapience right when kid-me kind of realized I was in a traumatic situation. And my grandmother wonders why I have issues.

My earliest memory was when I was ~9 months old (unsure of specific number), and they took me in for a hearing test bc they weren't sure if I could hear or not(?). It was this big dark room with a bunch of glass boxes in the walls with a bunch of different things in them. I was on my mom's lap, who was sitting on a cube in the middle of the room. Suddenly, a quacking sound sounds through the room and a box with a rubber duck in it lights up. I felt fear for the first time that day..

12:10 I actually came up with a story similar to this a while back. Gods are extremely common beings, living in a fantasy world where magic is abundant. To make things exciting, one of them creates our universe completely devoid of magic to make things interesting. Moral of the story: it all depends on the perspective.

@@break_the_galaxy Labels arean't bad. But we should consider them guidelines more than anything. If you are using one label it can change over time as you learn more about yourself. @@szymongruca3068 Yes, exactly. My point is that people need to be allowed to use labels if they want to, but we can't limit ourselves so strictly to the same label or only one because people change. Labels themselves are a good thing, but we can't allow them to hold us back

The first few days my Boss really stressed me out because he wanted to know when I‘ll be coming back. I had a full blown emotional brackdown because of it and wrote him an Mail detailing that I have no idea what else I could do so he would leave me alone. I was keeping to my country’s regulations and had a excuse from my doctor. I really don’t get why he stressed me so much about that. Especially because I have a co-worker how was on sickleave for about 30% of her workdays and nobody gives a fuck. While I have probably all sickdays I‘ve had in the last 3 years now at once. Sorry but I just needed to vent because it really troubles me.
