How much of it is appreciated and how much of it is entitled depend on person. And sadly the entitled want to shout to the world that they deserve to continue to be "taken care of" by their parents while people who are truly grateful have to be searched and found. There's also the line of smothering and disrespecting the fact that your child IS an adult, which many adults want their parents to respect. The daughter in her 70s you mentioned was suffering from dementia, so she needs her mother's care just as much as she would need the care workers' when the sadly inevitable happens.

There once was a woman who had 100 children. She named each of them after numbers in the order they were born. There was a fire and all of them died except Ninety. Ninety went off to have kids of her own. They were very kind and loving. One day they found an injured dog. They took it home and nursed it back to health. They hid the dog and never told their mother afraid she would kick the dog out. In fact, they never told anyone. To keep from arousing any suspicions they named the dog "This" so the name could be used in conversation. One day This ran away. They never saw This again. No one else knew about This. For the writing one, the key thing: You cannot be limited to just your race and sexuality. I write the story of a guy with a Russian mother and an Inuit Father. My IRL parents are American. What I can do though is TALK to people who do have those experiences, to learn of the cultures, see how they may interact, etc. You don’t have to write yourself to be a legitimate writer, and it really pisses me off when people say otherwise. My protagonist and I would disagree on a lot of things. In my Aspergers I talk to women to see if another character who is also a woman, has a similar socialization (expressed via thoughts, behaviours etc) If you want to make a character that is not you, great! It is suggested to learn so that you properly represent people. This way you don’t make stupid mistakes, like merging the Inca and the Aztecs because that is all you think old Mesoamerican cultures were like, and not as diverse and fascinating as they actually are. TL;DR write what you know, is beautiful because you can LEARN. You do NOT need to write what you ARE.
@joylox Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't it be really boring if everyone just wrote about people like them? There'd be no diversity in the cast of characters. I like when people write about their experiences, but it's so important to also learn about others. We wouldn't have people who study history and write reports on it if that was gatekept, but they look into the region, the artifacts, the folklore and passed down history, to write about what that culture or that experience is.

I wish it were so simple as just asking people for how to write something. I want to be inclusive in my writing, especially with neurodivergent characters since I'm autistic myself and I know good neurodivergent characters are few and far between, but often when I ask, I'm shut down, told "just don't write about us you'll only fuck it up and if you even try we'll do everything we can to shut you down" and like. I get it, but how are you ever going to get more accurate representation, more people to understand you, and less people who think there's something *wrong* with you, when you lambast people for asking and wanting to get it right?

Not to mention you largely can't survive as a restaurant by only having a minority for guests. Sure, in a large city you can have that authentic eatery where you cater to a Chinese audience. But in rural areas you just don't have enough Chinese people to do that. And even if you're de facto a community institution, you still have to serve every customer and why not? Not having enough room to seat everyone is a rare luxury problem. There is a kind of trend towards more interest in exotic and novel food, particularly a larger variety of ethnicities and their dishes. Gatekeeping people from experiencing food, among the most accessible and shareable cultural expressions, is stupid and segregationist. I never heard of someone resenting paying customers for enjoying their food so long as they are halfway respectful.

10:20 So I'm Latino. I used to be relatively dark skinned. Idk what happened but every fucking ounce of melanin left my body. My black, Kinky hair uncurled and is straight/brown now. My brown eyes turned blue. My skin is so goddamn pale that I don't tan, I burn, INSTANTLY. I have no idea what happened. I just faded over 4-5 years. My brother too. There's no way it's vitiligo. Idk. But when I used to show my face I would get so heavily harrassed because I specifically said I was Latino and everyone was accusing me left and right of lying, that latinos are brown not white ect. I've never felt more goddamn rage. But the worst part? My hair REFUSES to curl. I tried so many ways and it won't. I used to be so proud and happy with my looks because I looked just like mi abuelo and it made me feel big and strong and brave just like he was! And after being harrassed it made my insecurity about whatever happened to me so much worse and now I won't even put my HANDS in public photos and I actively darken my skin tone when I post my face (which again, I keep to friends). I at least want my hair back...

A teen girl at a pizza shop gave me a dirty look because I wouldn't tip on a $10 pizza when all she did was hand me the card machine. I'd tip for a pizza delivery, but not that. "Guilt tipping" is getting out of hand. I empathize with service workers, especially considering the sitatution and the last few years, but geeeeeeeeeeeeeeez. I don't have a lot of money (poor) and so it just seems like there's so much extortion of extra costs where there used to be none. I can't afford to pay an extra 2-5$ for every cost on top of tax. Tipping isn't a thing in places like Europe. Restaurants need to pay their workers more and stop shifting the burden to customers.

fun story about people getting offended by pants one of my friends told me this story about her mom. so I'm guesstimating it happened in 1970-80 she (my friend's mom) came from a very rural area, very traditionalist. But she went to study in a big city in the north for university and picked up some more relaxed habits. especially about dressing. she started wearing pants because everyone else was doing it and she found them comfortable. not a problem untill she went back to her parent's house for summer vacation. she didn't want to get back into a gown because comfort so she just went with pants. her parents didn't really love it as much as she did but they knew better than judge her from her clothes' choice. her father told her that if anyone ever disrespected her she should tell him and that ended the conversation. well, as it happened there was no need for it because no one told her anything (apart from the disapproving looks) they just went directly to her father with their complaints (they were sure he could make her stop or something) the conversation went something like this: "Why are you letting your daughter dress like that? it's immodest and immoral. She should be wearing a gown!" "why? so that it's easier for you to lift it?" and no one ever said anything again.

That last story about the man with breast cancer is precisely the reason why, when I started the support group I run for recipients of hysterectomies and early surgical menopause patients, I made a point to state that we were open to all individuals who may fall into those categories... Specifically that We also would be welcoming any men who had had those procedures done. Up until that point, I had never come across a support group that was for that particular medical issue and not only openly acknowledged that we were seeking to work with people who had those procedures prior to having their own biological children, that we were focusing on it being a difficult but necessary medical choice in order to improve our quality of life and as such we would be celebrating those decisions for better health rather than do what a lot of groups do, which is try to talk people out of it if they haven't had at least one kid or make comments about if you're a young person you absolutely must go on to hormone therapy or your essentially abusing your own body, and that lastly we would be welcoming to any trans men or non-binary folk that were navigating these particular procedures and issues regardless of whether they had the procedures as intervention for something like cancer or if it was done as part of their gender affirmation. If I'm honest, I don't think that a whole lot of the people who have opted to join the group so far are specifically aware of that feature because of the less common instance of those kinds of cases, and right now it's about 420 people and one of those people is apparently male based on their info. I guess I just felt it was really important to acknowledge that those individuals need support to get through what is arguably an incredibly difficult decision and recovery just as much as anybody else. I've definitely had people tell me that they aren't comfortable joining a group that would have participants presenting as male even if they understood that they had a uterus to monitor, definitely been accused of being woke as the con say these days, but to this day, I haven't found anybody who was able to present a valid argument other than their own discomfort with the fact that by being part of the group they are essentially agreeing to those parameters. I feel sorry for that guy. It's not as if there are a plethora of groups focused on male gender identities dealing with breast cancer. It does make me wonder if that same group would do the same thing to a trans man though... At least in my case, when a person who has a male appearing photograph or their name appears to be a man, I make sure to reach out in private before giving them access to the group and ask them to help me understand. In a lot of cases, it's just a shared profile between spouses or something, and I'd expect that that group would also have people with shared profiles wanting in, but I've definitely seen group admins say that if it was a shared profile between you and your husband that you would not be allowed to join the group because it would be giving a man access to a group that might have personal photos and stuff in it as part of the spouses sharing access. If I'm honest, it doesn't make sense to me why people would get keep it like that anyway because it's entirely different than having an individual man under his own personal profile join the group as a means to try and take advantage of a bunch of women or something... I should think that if your husband and you share a profile that your husband's already aware of your illness and your need for support, and hopefully he would be capable of respecting those boundaries and letting you have your private space. I do understand to a certain extent why it would be uncomfortable for primarily female group with a multicultural participation count to reject male oriented profiles... But I honestly think that if you want to be a group admin for these kinds of sensitive topics, it's extremely important for you to not create the boundaries for that group based on your own personal agenda or political beliefs. Now, I'm a member of the queer community and my boundaries are certainly more in alignment with my politics than maybe the case for others, but an example if it not being in alignment with my beliefs is the fact that I specifically call out respecting religious affiliations and opposing political viewpoints that may come out during conversations. Just because I don't agree with most Republican policies doesn't mean that a Republican won't need support during such a difficult time... But it does suck to have to have arguments with other people who think choosing to do that is not okay.

It's honestly really cool to see so many people of an entirely different ethnicity all in one place just, chatting and eating food. Not being harassed by others like you would see in schools or on the streets, just living their own lives and enjoying it. My family is hispanic mostly, so sometimes when we eat at a Chinese restaurants we kind of just go "hah that's funny. we the only non-asians here" and sit down and eat. We didn't bother anyone, we didn't try to, we were just there for the food. And hey, we're supporting a local business and not McDonald's for once. I joke about the chopsticks being annoying to use but it's because I lack the proper skill and practice to use them. I'm bad at sculpting too you expect me to throw shade at Alice Adams? Chinese food tastes amazing and I don't understand why someone would get so worked up about eating food people like. If I told everyone to stop consuming tamales because it's cultural appropriation my family would disown me on the spot. The idea that you cannot eat certain dishes because they were created by people who you weren't descended from is stupid and ironically enough is pretty racist on it's own. Reminds me of something that happenned with my family at christmas- my brother's boyfriend was visiting us and he suddenly lost 1 of his fingers that he had a couple of days ago. All of my family ignored it and acted like it was just a normal, totally average day. I mean thats a surprising or shocking thing right? At least unexpected, and even i didnt think anything about it but i feel like i should have lol

I got a bit drunk with my friends this friday and busted out some shitty dance moves and was a bit extra at times, but in a jovial way. Literally nobody but me will ever think about that but myself, but I still cringed about it a bit after I was done nursing my hangover. Watching this gave me the Michael Scott cringe face a couple times and also made me feel better about myself.

The girl gamer example is 90% of the reason women don’t like to chat in video games. We mention regular shit like we like to play the game and weirdos come in to try and flirt, ask way too many personal questions, insult or gatekeep and get angry when you don’t immediately give them all your attention.

3:28 sometimes when watching certain shows or movies the actors speak so quietly it’s hard to understand them.. but then if you put the volume too high and an action scene comes on it’ll start blasting your ear drums

This is a legitimate issue and is why I almost never watch movies anymore. Hollywood just has no idea how to properly mix audio or whatever; why the heck would I want sound effects or music to be LOUDER than the dialogue? I want to hear what the characters are saying because that’s generally pretty important, how are productions with budgets in the tens of millions of dollars consistently messing up something so basic?

I was 5 years old, in prep (before year 1 in aus) and I remember this little kid teaching me how to draw a graffiti S. he explained it so clearly, I can remember the entire thing. Every single time in my life when I’ve drawn one, I remember that little kid explaining it to me, and do it step by step to his voice. It’s the only way I remember “You draw 3 lines, then you draw another 3 lines” “Then you connect these ones” “Then you draw triangles on the top and bottom” “The join the ends”

6:57 for those who don't know: A carburetor is an enginepart that was responsible for creating and maintaining the air-fuel mixture needed to run the engine. It got replaced by direct fuel injection into the piston chamber in the 90s, but it's still used in small motors, like those in lawnmowers or motorbikes. Also: 12:37 I also drive a manual, but boy do I love the crisp gear changes from certain DCT transmissions

TLDR: did the air/fuel mixture before fuel injection was invented. Now redundant.

if anybody is wondering, a carburetor is the part on an engine that mixes fuel and air together, which is done so for a few reasons, one being that it explodes a lot better than just adding fuel to the engine

Ah well I'll try to add that to my memory then. Never really learned about those since there are several thousand times more vehicles using fuel injectors than there ones using carburetors, or at least in terms of vehicles that are actually on the road.
