There's at least a dozen stories of Death coming for Humans only to have it be tougher than expected. Don't know if that's just a common theme, or a connected universe by the same author. One of the funniest is about Humans being in a war, and the medics are working on a dying soldier, keep pulling him away just as Death thinks he has him. At one point the medic literally punches Death if I remember right.
