A popular device used for quotation and storytelling.
This began on the *chan imageboards, where quoting text places a Less or Greater than symbol in front of it, turning it green. This effect can also be done manually. Before long, this feature was put to innovative use. When quoting another post, greentext is frequently used for summary, criticism, and ridicule. Its other major use is storytelling, in which a lengthy story is told through fragmentary statements in greentext.
Greentext became highly popular for both of these functions due to its convenience. When quoting a post, it is easier to summarize than to respond in full. When telling a story, stringing together sentence fragments is a grammatically easier alternative to prose composition (it also makes for lighter reading).
This feature has become so widespread that it is sometimes used outside of imageboards (eg KZbin comments).

If you had a 1000 kg projectile sent out at 200,000,000 m/s, roughly 2/3 the speed of light, it would have the energy equivalent to over 7.3 billion tons of TNT, more than 7300 megatons. For comparison, the energy of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was around 100,000,000 megatons. That wouldn't glass the entire surface, but I'd say their attack would be pretty devastating. All from a single ton of mass.

The asteroid did no such thing. The fact is the fossil record actually shows the dinosaurs were already on the way to extinction, WELL on the way. All the asteroid did was finish the job climate change had already started. The reasons for that climate change are fairly extensive. It was a period of massive vulcanism, continents were breaking up, and so climate changed rapidly. Climate change itself is not really an issue when it comes to mass extinction IF it is a gradual change. The mass extinctions occur when it is a RAPID change, as organisms do not have the time to evolve alongside the climate. Which is why small organisms with short generation times are most likely to survive such events. While the asteroid would certainly have had an impact, especially in the vicinity of the impact, the fact is all it actually did was finish off a process that had been ongoing for a while. It added to what was already ongoing, a period of rapid climate change. It is currently not actually certain whether the asteroid alone would have caused such a massive extinction event, however add that to the vulcanism and continental fragmentation that had already been ongoing, then you get the straw that finally breaks the camels back.....

Just had a thought about why the humans were admitted to the alliance, instead of it trying to punish them: Their observers watched the kutarians kill half a billion children, and did nothing. Admitting humanity to the alliance certainly helped mitigate humanity deciding the alliance was complicit and should be punished.
