This song is so good. Freddie was really sick by this time but he wanted to keep on singing and he knocked this out of the park. Written by Brian, he was not sure Freddie was strong enough to sing it because it has a lot of high notes. Brian told Freddie that it was okay if he couldn't do it and so Freddie Tossed back a couple of vodka shots and said "I'll do it, Darling." He did it in one quick session. People say that it was one take, but according to Brian, all songs, even this one were done three times in order to have a variety to choose from if necessary.

Yeah, it's kinda cool that even though they knew Freddy didn't have much time left, the still agreed to do multiple takes for fear of having a sub-par sound and disappointing their fans...the show must go on, indeed!

Brian recalls, “I said ‘Fred, I don’t know if this is going to be possible to sing.’ And he went , ‘I’ll f##king do it , darling’ - vodka down “and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal.” In writing the lyrics Brian said, “I woke up one morning with this image of butterflies in my head, and I thought I would love to hear Freddie sing: ‘My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies.’ I thought.”

His passing was a real tragedy. He is missed all the time and every show they still play it's a tribute to Freddie. It's really sad that he was never able to perform this live. It's an incredibly difficult song to sing.

ths was one of the best reactions i've seen to this one. love this song. My first concert was Elton John when I was 13, it was 93 fairly soon after Freddie died. Elton sang this in concert, dedicated to "his good friend, Freddie". Pretty sure everyone in the venue was tearing up.

We have a saying "a songbird sings its best song before it dies". This also applies to Freddie, he kept his radiant voice to the end. Mothers love was the very last thing he couldn't finish. Brian then sings the last verse.

Brian said it in an interview: “We didn’t discuss what the meaning of the song was, but it was of course evident in the background that it was an attempt to give a voice to the feelings that Freddie’s valiant fight against AIDS created in all of us, and even in Freddie. He was too low in energy to create it himself. But I had one unforgettable special afternoon working together with him on solidifying the lyrics of the first verse of this embryonic song about a clown whose make-up hid his pain, before he slid out to attend another treatment. That gave me enough lyrical material to later expand into the eventual two verses.”

Brian May wrote this during Freddie’s illness and boy did the show go on, his last recording is Mother Love, Freddie sang every verse when he was feeling well enough to go to the recording studio. Brian sings the final verse, poor Freddie couldn’t make it back in and he said once I can’t sing anymore he’ll die and that’s pretty much what happened

The song closes Queen’s final studio album released during Freddie’s lifetime. While “The Show Must Go On” was mainly written by lead guitarist Brian May, the song’s theme is driven by the probability it would be Freddie Mercury’s “finale”. His severe symptoms made recording Innuendo difficult. The “Innuendo” recording sessions were completed by November 1990; the album was released in February 1991. After those sessions, Freddie continued to record studio vocals as much as his health would allow. He loved his work; or rather, he passionately loved making music, and had always tried to keep his personal life private. Dear Freddie. My name is Mark Daniels. My brother Paul contracted HIV in 1987 when he ran away from home. He went to London chasing a dream of a professional dancer. Sadly it never happened. He returned home with us in 1990 and told his family he was infected and his heart broken along with our family and it finally took him in January 2020. My brother was beautiful and had a hearty of gold and for everything bad he did he regretted. When he died I reflect to this song because the pain was there but the love was genuine l.
