It was a different take on things. I had to put my dog down and carry it out. That’s how they do it apparently unless you pay for them to dispose of your pet. It was hard to drive home with my dog’s body next to me in the passenger seat but it was my choice to take her home and bury her in the backyard. As I weren’t there I can’t speak for the vet’s intent but I do know from my previous experiences with law enforcement that people sometimes use gallows humour as a coping mechanism. It would be hard as an animal lover to have to put down people’s pets all the time so humour can make it a bit easier. That being said it was the wrong time and place for that type of joke. People understandably can be sensitive about these things.

About that "executioner" thing. Last year I had to have a cat that I grew up with put asleep. I got home from work and didn't see her, and spent 2 hours searching my house for her I found her seemingly dead under our couch, only for her to make noise when I tried to pick her up. She was 17 years old, and it was very obvious that she was dying, so I took her to get put asleep. The whole experience was one of the hardest things I've ever dealt with, and I am very glad that the doctor was respectful and professional about it, because if she started making jokes like that "executioner" thing, I honestly don't know if I could have taken it

I was a bit younger than the daughter in that story when I witnessed my cat who I had had since I was a few months old be put down. The vets were extremely solemn and respectful of the situation and I knew her final moments were those of respect and dignity. If someone had made that joke to me I would have lost it. She was too beautiful and dignified to die while someone was making jokes about her. Treat peoples pets with respect because most consider them a part of the family and nobody “executes” the little friend and emotional support they have lived with for years. When I was in high school I had thyroid cancer, and when going through chemo she still made me do my work, all the other teachers didn’t and they sent their well wishes. She was in pharmacy school on her 7th year (almost had a doctorate) and she was in the late stages of pregnancy with my little sister but the dean wouldnt cut her any slack, my mom got kicked out of pharmacy school because the dean didnt like that the professors were letting her make up lectures and exams, she was doing really well in the classes and this was the only time she got any slack, but now she cant go back and finish her school because her student debt is to high. I had to recently put my dog of thirteen years to sleep, yes it was my choice but in reality I didn't have any other option that would have been ethical- my dogs health was failing and she was in constant pain. She could barely walk, she couldn't eat, she constantly cried and whimpered from pain and seemed to have no idea what was going on in her surroundings anymore. She was constantly anxious, scared, and acted as if people she'd known her whole life were strangers. On the day before her last she laid on the floor having a seizure and refused food the whole day. I made the call that it was time, keeping her alive when she was in constant pain and had no virtual quality of life was selfish, the most kid and loving thing I could do for my baby girl was to let her go out peacefully and painlessly in her sleep rather than force her to die slowly and painfully. When I took her in it was one of the hardest things I'd ever had to do. I'd had my baby since I was 5, we literally grew up together. I laid with her and comforted her for an hour before I finally allowed the vets to give her the shot. I sobbed and held her to me as she slowly fell asleep in my arms for the last time, and I'm pretty sure a piece of me died with her. The staff were all so respectful, caring, and understanding. Pets aren't just animals, they are family, and situations like this where a pet is being put to sleep should be treated with compassion and care, it is not the time for joking. They were very right to be offended and hurt at the treatment shown to them, I would have been more devastated than I already was and am if they'd joked around while I was saying my last goodbyes to someone whos been my best friend for my entire life. Rest easy, Lucy.

Totally agree. This is where I stopped watching the video. Having to have your pet put down (for most pet loving people anyway) is comparable to having to pull the plug on a terminally ill family member. Imagine the doctor or nurse coming in to the room and saying the executioner line just before taking your grandmother off her respirator. It's not funny, and not "making light of a bad situation". Also as far as having to walk through the lobby with a dead animal, MOST vets give you the dignity of being able to leave quietly out of a rear exit of the building, so you don't need to face other people in the lobby when you are trying to hold it together. Plus, imagine the other side, being a little kid in the lobby with a sick animal, and being forced to watch someone carrying out their dead dog through the same room. That could be traumatizing! The whole point of being able to cover up a deceased animal is for respect and dignity... the term "a to-go bag" just irked me.

I'm 23 and lost my mom last month, my cat Luna had 3 kittens before dawn last Tuesday which has helped me through it, Saturday Luna had put one of the kittens I'd been trying to bottle feed because she wasnt gaining weight in the opposite corner of the box her 2 others were in, I brought her to the vet and after being told to choose between putting a tube down her throat and into her stomach due to a cleft pallet at the back of her mouth (which they told me theres a low chance of survival because of how small she is with a high chance of suffering) or choose to put her to sleep. This is the first time Ive had a cat have kittens and also the first time Ive had to make this kind of decision. I cant imagine if the vet had acted like that and tried making jokes. I had a doctor who made a comment either making light of the situation or maybe he's just an asshole but I had a miscarriage at 19 and after my doctor had confirmed and put me on prenatal vitamins I was in the ER sobbing into my ex. The doctor seeing me sobbing and screaming straight up said "well we dont even know if you were pregnant." I had 3 options for what to do with her after: cremate, take home to bury, or donate her to science. Since I chose to donate her to help other cats I dont know what they would do if I chose to bring her home but with them actually letting me inside to sit with her and say goodbye and the kindness of the vets to me and my kitten they certainly would've given something to bring her home in if I didnt have something with me. I highly doubt that the person meant like a plastic garbage bag but something with more dignity and privacy to make it easier at least. I dont know why you got so angry with the reviewer because the insensitivity in moments like that and utter disregard for a family's pain is EXACTLY the reason a vet should get horrible reviews.

Having lost a cat that I grew up with and pretty much can't remember a life without before his death (there's pictures of me as a toddler having him as a juvenile cat on my lap, we go back THAT far), if the vet had been that insensitive when we had to put him down due to multi-organ-failure, I can't really tell how I would have reacted. I had a 14 year old Pit Bull she was an angel but she was going deaf, had arthritis in all of her limbs, and had other health issues that made her life much harder. Everday she looked miserable and we knew that she wasn’t living a good life so we had to make the difficult decision to put her down. The executioner thing was not cool at all. This mom had to explain to her daughter their long family dog won't be here anymore, and it was probably put down because of a sickness or old age. Maybe just maybe makes jokes afterwards, and don't joke about how you're gonna be the one to essentially kill the dog. I understand that it can be seen from a different point of view, but if my cat died, I really don't wanna hear a single joke. I personally think the “executioner” was in the wrong for the animal story... if you have to put down a much loved family pet (for reasons like age or illness) and are feeling a lot of grief and mourning, someone making a joke instead of expressing condolences or respecting your feelings can hit really close to home, ESPECIALLY with the young daughter.
