ive been saying this for so long. you need to be able to roll ur r's if u want to speak turkish with good pronunciation. everyone says u dont. and now look. i was right the whole time.
@laurendaryani4893Ай бұрын
I only just started learning Turkish and am finding that the language is not as phonetic as instructors have said it is. With the r, and also with the differences in pronunciation that my ear is picking up in other syllables depending on their locations in words (a, e, ı), there are more rules than I had anticipated. Not that they can't be overcome, but it's gonna take some more mindfulness to get good. I still feel like Farsi, when transliterated in English, reigns as the easiest and most straightforward language I've been able to pronounce when learning.
@musicandfanart5787Ай бұрын
I speak Norwegian, and this is NOT a rolled R. It’s actually more similar to the English R than the rolled R. They have a tapped R which is a tapped R, sure, but it’s never rolled.
@yerkishisi29 күн бұрын
no, it is not rolled, alveolar tap [ɾ] in word, and voiceless lowered alveolar tap (that sounds like sh) [ɾ̥̞] at the end.

@@laurendaryani4893 Our diction instructors always say that Turkish is not read as it's written, meaning it's a wrong conception even among Turkish people. You gotta know not to pronounce the R's at the end of the suffix -yor, you should know which A's to elongate and which L's to roll, the closed and open E's etc. because we don't have accent marks on our letters. Even looking at the suffixes, i would commend anyone that is aiming to learn Turkish. Good luck with that if you are still on the learning route ^^

Turkish R is rather like the Italian R... but less emphasized... That's why Italians have a good accent, when they learn Turkish.
@memetsbАй бұрын
good is an exaggeration. u can literally hear the accent. its like that italian guy on masterchef. u can hear his accent. idk how u think italians have a good accent for turkish just cuz of a similarity between one letter 💀

Interesting video. The thing is, of course, that the relisations of Turkish R still feel allophonic with R in English and several other languages, and so you might not notice it so much right away while learning. I certainly hadn't given it much thought before. The way it is actually pronounced, however, seems relatively easy after trying to learn how to pronounce Czech Ř.
@JRios270Ай бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. It doesn't sound like an alveolar tap that you would hear in many other languages. This sounds like a raised alveolar trill, which I think is what the Czech Ř is as you said.

Another helpful video, thank you. 🙌Turkish ‘R’ sounds always fascinate me. So different from Australian English. I’m from a rural area and our speech is quite ‘flat’. The letter R at the end of a word is almost imperceivable, eg, mirror pronounced more like mirra; better - betta. So different from American English. Can you please do a video on “K”? I have noticed that sometimes it is pronounced softly from the back of the throat or is that a regional accent? Çök teşekkürler. 😊
@Denizzyigitt26 күн бұрын
Yes, the pronunciation of the letters K and H varies from region to region. In the eastern parts of Türkiye, where Kurds predominantly reside, these letters are pronounced much harder and more gutturally. However, the official form of Turkish is Istanbul Turkish. In Türkiye, TRT announcers speak in Istanbul Turkish. That being said, it would be incorrect to assume that everyone living in Istanbul speaks Istanbul Turkish, as the city is home to people from various countries and ethnic backgrounds.
@Denizzyigitt26 күн бұрын
In this link, guests on a program aired in the 90s, who were TRT announcers, complain about how young people and others spoke Turkish even 30 years ago. I wonder what they would do if they saw today’s youth! kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5q9qoeVr7qgo5Isi=SIhym4QFIdr-PqOH

No, there is no hard K or a guttural sound like ‘ng’ in Turkish, at least not in Türkiye. I cannot speak for the Ottoman era. The official language of Türkiye is Istanbul Turkish. So, which person who speaks Istanbul Turkish uses a hard K, Q, or the ‘ng’ sound? Can you give an example? I am talking about genuine Turkish.

MERHABA. Bu yılın mayıs ayından beri Türkçe öğreniyorum. Çekçe ile bazı benzerlikler beni çok şaşırttı. Ben Çek'im. Aynı sese sahibiz ve onu Ř yazıyoruz. Türkçede de bu sesin olduğunu bilmiyordum. Sadece Çekçe'de Ř olduğunu söylüyoruz. Ama görüyorum ki bu doğru değil. Videolar için teşekkürler

Even us Turks sometimes confuse it. I was gonna enter a game show on TV, I called the number, answered the question and gave my number at the end. However my number ended with 1 (bir in Turkish), but the person taking the numbers heard it as 5 (beş in Turkish) and I had no phone calls. They had called the wrong number. I was notified of that afterwards by a clever employee of the TV channel who recognized my name from my previous attempts. From then on I always over-pronounced that R, like: "birrrrr".

congratulations on the video. Have a question : when watching the "magnificent century" series, I notided that Halil Ergenc pronounced his wife's name as "Hyuzhem", despite the two "r's" in Hurrem being in the middle of the word. Does a different rule apply for a double "r" ? I am a turkish speaker myself, and generally comfortable with your "r's", but some times I still feel concerned ! thank you, pls keep on !

It would be awesome with showing IPA, since some people need clear phoneme designations to see to fully grasp the sounds in a language. R sound in Turkish is alveolar tap [ɾ] in word, and voiceless lowered alveolar tap (that sounds like sh) [ɾ̥̞] at the end. And comment on Final devoicing is on point, being lowered and devoiced, final r's in turkish almost sounds like a whistle, and since it is featural proximity, it comes off as sh to some ears, but of course, different in articulation nonetheless
@yerkishisi29 күн бұрын
I speak Azeri turkic myself, and we have this kind of allophony in our speech too. You would hear lowered voiced tap with front close vowels, and at the end of the word. Sometimes it can be devoiced too in some people's speech
