I shook my head at the guy in Story 2. If your partner is getting an advanced degree, you should be lifting them up (and maybe telling others how awesome they are). Not getting jealous and needlessly competitive.

Just proves what I always say. You do not need a degree to show you are intelligent. One of the stupidest people I know has a double degree in a medically related discipline, but thought the capital of China was Berlin, and once ended up in London on a train, because she just got on the first train she saw at (x) railway station. She thought all trains stopped at her home town.

The legal rules are that while you do not have to sort through and organize things, you may not shuffle, disguise, or otherwise make the records worse than as you yourself have them. However, discovery rules also allow a 'reasonable charge' for the costs of producing documents. Between law firms it is usually waived, but it would have been fair to bill for something like 10 cents per page - I have seen as much as 25 cents per page, but since OP was not doing the printing, the lesser amount seems more reasonable.

I think OP got a bit sensitive over her first Christmas with the in-laws. Absolute certainly in my family, if you had to be given hints on how to open a pretty parcel, the next one handed to you, no matter how well wrapped, by 'Santa' would be accompanied by variations of "Would you like someone to open it for you?" or "Do you need instructions?" On the other hand, there would have been NONE of the kitchen backstabbing afterwards. That WAS a reason to be steaming.

1: I have a quick story from the other side. Years ago I was in a very abusive relationship... like EVERY kind of abuse. One night we're driving back from his parents place (about an hour ride) and we stopped in a town about 40 min from our place to hit the gas station. I cant remember what started the fight (usually it was me breathing) and I got out and told him I needed 5 min to cool off. I got out and started walking to the otherside of the parkinglot. He followed me in the car screaming that I'd better get in now. I told him to leave me alone for 5 MINUTES. He left. Middle of the night...40 min drive home. So I started walking the highway. I know that's not legal but I didn't have a choice. Couple ppl tried to get me in their cars...really sketchy stuff. Finally a concerned person called the police and they found me walking. He offered to drive me to a town 15 min from my house. Thankfully I had a friend there. She woke her poor bf up at 1am and they drove me home. He was very kind about it. When I got back...he was in bed, sound asleep without a care in the world. Stayed with him way too long... even his parents said they didn't understand why I stayed. The funny part? When I finally broke it off..he told his family it was because I cheated. (So I broke up with HIM because I cheated?)😳 😂 ... and they believed him! (Except his sister) Good God... they were all crazy. Like genuinely.

Story 5: I wanted to write about my financial situation. I live in California and I currently reside in Section 8 housing and every year like clockwork, I have to prepare for my housing recertification process. Invariably I will receive a document stating which financials I’m required to send. Think 6 months of bank statements, four months of Direct Express statements, etc. Well last year I nearly had a conniption. Every time I thought that I had finished complying with the document, a week later I’d receive a statement claiming that I still owed more documents (this went on for four months). Finally, I sent a message that if the housing authority needed any more documents, they’d have to contact my landlord as I gave everything required and I was tired of being asked to resubmit the same crap! Recertification is supposed to take at most a month’s time; last year it took four months of my life, that I’ll never get back! Hopefully this year’s recertification won’t require that I have a nervous breakdown in order to comply with the stupidity that the housing authority?

I didn't know if its possible to do in the us, in my country i can wrap all documents together and send via certified mail with receipt for sending and receiving. And when they send a letter they want something what was send certified i only reply that i have the receipt they got what they wanted per certified mail and therefor they had it, if not that is there mistake and they had to search inhouse. Here it stops this crap very easy and fast and every judge would laugh at them when it comes to court, cause certified mail with receipt of receiving counts as they had all what they wanted. If lost, thats on them. And best have someone with you who sees and can testify that you take all documents in an envelope and send it all together. And if make it paranoid secure, let this person write a testimony that he saw you pack all in an envelope and send it via certified mail. In most cases this would be overkill, but better safe then sorry. ;) But, this would it be i handle it. After having a similar event with state bureaucracy.

@@SebastianDPunkt , yes, documents can be easily sent certified mail in the US. It will cost a bit, but at least you have the receipt that stuff was sent. Also, document by taking pics or video of the docs before putting them in envelope and after.

@@SebastianDPunkt By the letter of the law, the confirmation requirement from certified mail counts as bulletproof evidence of receipt. That's not to say that state pencil-pushers can't deny it regardless of the law, but the resulting court case against them should be an eventual win in your favor. Unfortunately, those jobs attract a disproportionate number of people who think that their very existence is a gift unto humanity granted by every single diety simultaneously.

Then, after the gifts were (carefully) unwrapped, and all the hoopla was over, she would proceed to collect up all of the wrapping paper, ribbon, and bows, flatten and carefully fold the paper, and then stow it all away for the next Christmas. And about the sudoku husband. Every generation in my family has done better than the generation before them. I'm better educated than my dad and he HATED it. He got in a screaming match with me because I simply said that humans and dinosaurs didn't live at the same time. It was that exact moment when I told myself I was going to be different with my kids. I stressed education to them and they grew up smarter than I am. Do I get an upset? Of course not! Do I ask advice when I don't know something? Hell yeah!. And my grandchildren are much, much smarter than I am. My oldest granddaughter asked for help with her math homework one day. The last three problems. I'm a pretty smart guy. My IQ is 148. Even though I never went to college, I have a college level education. That being said, the only problems she got wrong on her homework were the three that I helped her with. I was properly humbled and told her right then and there how proud I was of her and how much smarter she was than I will ever be. If more people spent less time competing over stuff that doesn't matter and instead built each other up, maybe this world would be a better place .

Story #3 - That bit about saying OP paid to have the gifts wrapped really annoyed me, as I've had similar happen. Just because I'm a guy people think that I don't know how to wrap a gift, so I have frequently been asked who I got to wrap them for me. I do leatherwork, woodworking, chainmailing, and a lot of other crafting, which they know about. Why would putting a little bit of coloured paper around something give me any trouble?

Get in the car story: OP, you let that bs go on far too long. Look what happened when you finally called her bluff. She stopped using that particular technique. "Too fat" story: Well done Jen!!! And you shamed him in front of his coworkers and bosses. Bet that made for some interesting work conversations afterwards. Fax story: Go ahead and complain to the judge. I'll bet he'd laugh you out of court.

Third story..... During the Christmas ceremony you're not supposed to talk and you're just supposed to sit there and creepily observe people??? Did she marry into an effing cult because that sounds terrible... That would just destroy any happiness about Christmas that I ever had. And as for that comment I wouldn't have waited I would have walked right in the kitchen and just dropped it I would have been like really working? Considering you're on holiday and you haven't been doing anything at all and I specifically asked you to help me get gifts that were appropriate for your family and you basically blew me off and then I would have looked at the women and said oh and I wrapped all those by hand by the way sorry that you suck so much at rapping that I can understand how you wouldn't be able to discern a store-bought wrap gift or someone who actually knows what they're doing and actually took the time and effort to put in because I wanted to be engaged for this stupid ceremony of yours. I would have been said speaking of this stupid ceremony are we going to slaughter a lamb or have a human sacrifice next? Then I would have taken the car home or gotten an Uber because yeah no I wouldn't put up with that disrespect hell no

Story 1. My husband was being a huge angry jerk (not unusual for him) at a gathering for great food, swimming in their pool, and playing games with HIS family. He said to me,” Get the kids we’re going home!!” I said, “I drove us here in my car. The kids are having a wonderful time and so am I. WE are not going anywhere but you can if you want”. He yelled, “What? Am I supposed to walk the 25 miles home??” I replied, “That’s up to you!” He took off on foot. We stayed a good long time with his always lovely family. When we got home, he was there still ticked off. He said, “I kept looking back to see if you were coming to get me and each time, you didn’t and I got madder with every step! And I’m hurting.” My response to him was,”Well if you’re going to be dumb, you better be tough!” End of conversation.

First year with my bf. We started dating before Christmas last year so this is technically our second Christmas together but we didn't celebrate and agreed not to get gifts last year because it was very early in the relationship and didn't know eachother well enough to get gifts. Our first anniversary past and we got eachother gifts. He found out that I am the type to wrap gifts needlessly decorative. I'm talking origami flowers and curled bows. Even the box is wrapped in a way that creates a pattern on the box. He is the type to put it in a gift bag and maybe put tissue paper in it. Its very cute, he hand made me a card that I'm planning on keeping. He's just not crafty like I am but his gifts are very thoughtful and his message in the card was beautiful.

I happen to enjoy making elaborate wrapping with ribbons, bows, trinkets attached to the tags, and not just always pre-made bows, either. I use wire ribbons sometimes, a snowflake ornament between the curled ribbons, mixed with sparkle things or yarn..all sorts of things. But that is me, and I love wrapping stuff. If everyone did so, mine would be like everyone else's, so who wants that?My sis put lottery cards and $100 bill in oven mitts one year! I LOVED that....she is a basic wrap gal, but I look forward to seeing what she comes up with this time. I also make sure my wrapping things can be reused in one way or another.

Story 1: My abusive ex used to pull the "get out of the car and insist on walking" thing. Except that several times, she did it *when she was the one behind the wheel.* I had to scramble frantically across to get into the driver's seat so that I could get the car out of the middle of the busy road where she'd left it, with me and the kids inside. I was terrified that somebody would rear-end us before I could get the car into gear and pull over to the side. So glad I've put several years and an ocean between myself and that partner by now.

About the Christmas story. My family doesn't worry about ceremony or wrapping paper. We do have someone play Santa Claus to hand out gifts. But we don't wait to watch as each person unwraps their gift. It's pretty much an organized free for all. And who really cares about how it's wrapped? The wrapping paper is just gonna be shredded and put in the garbage. I do wrap things neatly but there have been times when I've run out of wrapping paper and I've ended up using aluminum foil or newspaper Sunday comics pages. My tradition is, every year, I pick someone at random to completely envelope their gift in clear packing tape. They've come to expect it and will only waste about a minute looking for an opening and then just use scissors. And my whole family is good about giving gifts but if you do happen to get a gift that you're less than enthusiastic about you still make a big fuss and thank the person for it. It's not really about the gift anyway. It's about the fact that this person spent time to get you something and you should be thankful. People that get Christmas crazy drive me up a wall. Lol

This wasn't planned, but ended up awesome... One year when wrapping christmas presents I had bought some kind of plasticised wrapping paper and used this really good scotch tape. I was enjoying the process of wrapping and for no real reason I taped down all the seams on all the gifts. Turns out that no only can't you rip the "paper", but because I'd taped down all the seams there was no way to get your fingers in under a seam -- cue my dad reaching in his pocket, pulling out his jack knife and cutting his present open. Everyone else had to use a pair of scissors that were passed around. I've never found that type of paper again, or that type of tape...

See, the only time I ever got out of the car to walk I meant to walk the three miles home. I needed the fresh air and to calm down. I didn't do it for manipulation purposes. I felt better with the time to think and the walk, and could calmly discuss what bothered me when I got home.

Story 2 I can relate to this story, some people have fragile egos when they play games & get beaten. I been playing chess since i was 7 so i naturally got very good at it, as you do when you play something for a long time. I had friend who could not beat me at chess & it used to drive him nuts & get him chucking tantrums like a 2yr old, which used to make me laugh & him getting angrier. But he still wouldn't give up. He had something to ptove by beating me & his ego couldn't stand it. I would even be gracious and make it easier by removing my queen from the board & still beat him, sending him into another tantrum. To me & others around it was to funny to watch. We had a great friendship except for the chess part. Poor fellow ended up passing away & i was allowed to leave chess board on his coffin & it still makes me smile to this day.

The thing is, when you use a computer to send a fax it doesn't resume from where it left off. If it's interrupted, it restarts from page one since it has no idea how much was successfully received.

In the early days of fax they were expensive to operate but we used ours for business purposes. During the night we began to get fax spam mails. We'd request that they stop and most did except for one persistent spammer. After a week of increasingly rude requests asking that they stop, I realized we only needed to send one very different fax. I carefully joined several pages together with the stop message and fed the paper in. As the paper began to feed I attached the first page to the last. Now this endless loop of paper began to run through the fax. I locked up and went home, leaving the fax to send our endless request to stop. They did.

I'll admit to anger walking to end an argument, though I don't expect any attention for it, if I'm walking home I do mean to walk the whole way on my own. I do this to actually calm myself down, end up too tired after the walk to stay mad, or the solution to problem comes to me while I get my blood to flow in healthier ways.
