The lower reading and math scores are something that I take issue with. Nowadays, there are an increasing number of children who should be failing and held back for lower scores, but they aren't. They aren't because schools are expected to be successful and are punished when students don't do as well with things like cutting funding. I would argue though that passing someone who is doesn't deserve it is doing the kid a disservice, and is ultimately going to harm the kid in the long run. What if the kid doesn't know how to read and is about to graduate? Imagine being in a job interview and asking someone who seems promising "Do you have any weaknesses?" and the reply is: "I'm illiterate." WHO THE HECK WOULD WANT TO HIRE THIS PERSON? If they're held back, it sucks, but they get the help they deserve. Admittedly there's a lot about this issue I'm still unsure of (although I have a few teacher friends who have helped paint a grander picture to me), but if you know anything of substance about this issue, don't be afraid to reply to this.

I recognize the case from 7:13. To sum it up, not only was the "mother" okay with that man beating her kid, she was also doing the beating.
