ശ്രീ പൂർണ്ണത്രയീശ ക്ഷേത്രം തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറ | SREE POORNATHRAYEESHA TEMPLE THRIPUNITHURA | HISTORY

Sree Poornathrayesa temple ( ശ്രീ പൂര്‍ണ്ണത്രയീശ ക്ഷേത്രം) is a Hindu temple situated in Tripunithura, Kochi, the capital of the former Kingdom of Cochin, Kerala, India. The temple is considered among the greatest temples in Kerala and was the first among eight royal temples of the erstwhile Kingdom of Cochin. The presiding deity is Vishnu as Santhanagopala Murthy or Poornathrayeesa. He was the national deity of Cochin and protector guardian of Tripunithura. Poornathrayeesa is known for his love of elephants. Hence more than 40 elephants participate in his Vrishchikotsavam.
The temple is famous for its yearly utsavams or festivals. The main one is the Vrishchikoltsawam, which is conducted annually in the month of Vrishchikam (November-December), kicking off the Ulsava season in Kerala. This Vrishchikolsavam is the biggest temple festival in the world[citation needed] followed by the koodalmanikyam ulsavam iringalakkuda (Thrissur pooram is not an utsavam but it is a pooram so not counted as an utsavam) and one of the biggest major festivals in the world.[citation needed]
It is believed that childless couples will be blessed with children on praying Poornathrayesan. Offering kanikka (money offered to the lord) to Poornathrayeesa in the most pure gold pot on thrikketta purappadu day (fourth day of Vrishchikotsavam) is the greatest achievement that a devotee can achieve. Visiting Poornathrayeesa who is present on top of 15 elephants during the grand procession of Vrishchikotsavam is also considered to be an achievement of a devotee.

Dear Dipu avarkal, Wonderful and informative video. I am an Agama and temple researcher, the Para-Vasudeva iconography observed in Poornathrayeesha Temple is typical to Pancharatra agama. As rightly observed by Anujan Thirumeni- this iconography is common in Tamil Nadu but that is perhaps Pancharatra Agama and its various Samhitas were very much popularised during the period of Azhwars, Nathamuni, Ramanuja and Sri Vaishnavite Acharyas. But we should note that this iconography is found in Kerala also. You mentioned Ananthapuram Temple in Kasaragod, but apart from that you also have Thiruvazhmarban (Thiruvanparisaram/Thiruppathisaram near Nagercoil) which is considered the last of the 13 Divya Desam's in Kerala (erstwhile undivided Travancore) which is a gigantic idol or moola beram made of Kadusarkara of Chatur Bahu Maha Vishnu in sitting position. You can still find the archa/utsava berams of Thiruvananthapuram Padmanabhaswamy and Thiruvattar Adi Keshava in the same iconography. It is interesting to note that all these temples- Ananthapuram, Thiruvananthapuram, Thripunithura, Thiruvattar and Thirupathisaram, the Melshanthi is a vaishnavite Tulu Shivalli Brahmin community. There was a reference made to the Nava Thirupathi in Tirunelveli district, you will find it interesting that the Nanguneri Perumal (Thothathrinatha/Vaanamamalai Perumal) (though not part of 9 thirupathi) is in the same para-vasudeva iconography and up until 400 years ago, that temple followed Kerala Tantra rituals- when I had the opportunity to meet the Tharananellur Thanthri he was saying about how they had tantram in these temples in present day Tirunelveli district. About Thirumanjanam, it is new and interesting news for me regarding Tripunithura. Thirumanjanam according to Pancharatra agama is only performed on certain occassions. In comparison to Saivite Agamic literature, Vaishnavite Agama particularly Pancharatra Agama does not necessitate daily abhisheka to the main deity mainly due to the nature of the material with which the main deity is made (Kadusarkara, Saligramam, Wood etc). That is why a separate archa/abhisekha beram is there for. In Kerala, such practices are common in few temples Thiruvananthapuram, Thirupathisaram, Valiyasala Kanthalloor Mahavishnu (In Trivandrum), Thiruvattar, Poornathrayeesha and even to an extent in Thiruvalla (follows Pancharatra agama)- little water will be used for abhisekha because the dhruva/main beram became weak and there was damage inflicted on the idol. There is another commonality between Thiruvalla and Thirupunithura- the Melshanti and Tantri (Kuzhikattu) do not adorn Bhasma while performing rituals inside the Nalambalam, and the two Melshanti's appointed will always belong to Tulu vaishnavite brahmin community and Sagara/Samudra Dwija community- who again have a Shivalli heritage. The Adi seshan behind Poornthrayeesha is similar to Sudarshanamoorthy behind Sri Vallabha- this practice is again common in Pancharatra Agama and the deity behind changes based on iconography. In most Sri Vaishnavite temples you will find Narasimha behind Sudarshana. You can also find Narasimha behind in the form of a Daru Shilpam above in Chathursra Srikovils found in Kerala, even in Siva temples sometimes.
