Fun Fact: Gold leaf is not all that expensive, since it's such a tiny amount of gold. You can get a small stack of leaflets for 10-20 USD. Chefs who don't know what they're doing will throw gold leaf on bad food to jack up the price and make it look fancy, even though the cost of the materials is nowhere near as much, as seen in the chicken nuggets example. Gold is chemically inert, so it won't do anything to your body, but that's still a waste. Bad chefs will also do this with caviar, even though that's not what you're supposed to do with caviar.

Not only that but earning money from videos of you doing charity work allows you to invest that money into other charity projects. It's basically what Mr Beast does - do the charity work and post a video on youtube, then use the money you earn from that youtube video to do more charity. The more attention videos get the more money you have, allowing you to do more significant good in the world. I don't get why it bothers people so much when someone earns money like that. If they are using it to help people isn't it all good? Even if it is someone who only does it because it gets them attention, the charity is still real. Someone's life was made better so what does it matter if the person doing is in it just for the attention?

@@kaillahwell, I suppose the part that creeps people out about that sort of video is that it puts the recipient of charity in an uncomfortable position where they have to let a stranger publicize their suffering and use it to promote ideals they may or may not support. To frame it in a more sinister light: "I'll give you and your kids a bit of the resorces you should already have, but don't, because life is cruel, but only if you let me treat your suffering as a cheap bit of entertainment for people who have never had to worry about what park bench they'll be able to sleep on that night".

My cousin and I were born exactly a year apart to the day. We always celebrated our birthdays together, and chose the birthday meal together. When I was turning 15 and she was turning 16, we decided that we just wanted to give our moms a list of demands. They were as follows: - No silverware - Potatoes - Broccoli - Something with cheese When we sat down for dinner, the table had been covered in brown paper and the floor underneath with a plastic tarp. My mom and aunt brought in bowls, flipped them upside down on the table, and then lifted them like a cloche. I don't think I've ever heard two grown women laugh more gleefully than they did at the glorious mess. That day, we ate with our hands off the table, and it was messy and glorious. I hope that everyone gets the chance one day to forsake our cultural silverware and dishes and just grab a cheese-covered potato cube from the table directly in front of your uncle and cackle as he fails to steal it back. Messy? Yes. But absolutely worth doing at least once. You won't forget it.

Reminds me of my son's summer camp stories. Apparently, the camp leaders will also cover the tables with single use table cloth (idk if it's paper or plastic) and they'll draw the plates and silverware shapes on for each child with the sauce of their choice, before "plating" the fries and fried snacks. Since they're in the middle of nowhere, without access to things like electricity and running water, I can see why they do this once a week during these camps. Saves a lot of dishes when you have that many mouths to feed. And the kids absolutely love it. Most kids like messy play, and combined with food, which they're often taught should be eaten as cleanly as possible, makes for an exciting meal for most kids.

the trick to not commiting food crimes is start simple, don't overdo it. i recommend soup. you get some soup stuff, you know, some veggies and meat, throw it in a pot and let it boil. there are some tricks to it, but really it's hard to mess up. just don't throw anything that doesn't belong in a soup into the pot. may not come out very tasty, but it will be edible.

Fun fact: Back in 2001, a German man by the name of Armin Meiwes, aka the “Rotenburg Cannibal”, killed and consumed a person who consented to being cannibalized. If I remember correctly, the court case itself was actually quite complicated since the victim specifically consented to this, shown via chat logs from a forum on the dark web, and cannibalism wasn’t illegal at the time. He was convicted for manslaughter in 2004, and then was sentenced to life in prison in 2006 after a retrial.

Its kind of like if you don't have housing long enough you'll crash on the couch of some friend of a friend's cousin with more feelings of safety than you would just sleeping outside, even if you don't know they don't have a criminal record or anything. That joke about cannibalism only being okay when consensual reminds me of that story about the guy who was arrested for being an "ethical" cannibal. He had no interest in eating anyone who wasn't 100% for it. Wild story. He's in jail and, if iirc, he is now a vegetarian.

The charity parable is a double-edged sword because providing a new building to help many orphans and telling people about it for their approval vs. not telling people about it for the extra clout you receive spiritually, both are being done to maximize the benefit to the giver. The skittle tequila cocktail probably has a very low alcohol content since alcohol evaporates at 173 deg F. The coffee heats water close to 200 deg F. If enough vapor collects, it may ignite causing a fire. So unless that TikToker disabled the heating element, sooner or later she’ll burn down her kitchen.

Most coffee makers depend on the heating element to pump the water, though. (Technology Connections has a video about it.) In Madrid, Spain, they'll pour the milk into your coffee right in front of you so you can tell them to stop when you want. They'll also ask if you want your milk cold, hot, or lukewarm (where they'll mix hot and cold) so you can basically determine the temperature of the finished product. I used to be a homeless child. I, unfortunately, remember it vividly. The thing that stung the most was being nonexistent to everyone else, or at the most something lesser than. Most that did see me saw me as a thing to pity, a burden, a problem. Hardly any of them saw what I actually was, though. A human being without food, or shelter, or care. There were a few times though when someone would approach with a gift. Something to eat, a blanket, some shoes one time. I remember those people with great fondness. This was all way before the modern world we live in where clout is everything so why they were doing it didn't really factor into my thoughts behind their gesture. Now, reset the situation I was in but make it today, as it is for many. If someone were to have come up to me with something I needed, but they were filming it so they can virtue signal on whatever platform pays the most, do you think I would have cared? Hell no. I wouldn't care if you had an entire professional camera crew following you. What does it matter? In my eyes that does not devalue the gift. Who cares whether they're doing it out of altruism, or for personal gain. At the end of the day, I got something I needed and they got something they wanted. The way I see it, it's win:win. I think people who moan about those who does this sort of thing (film their good deeds for clout) need to first, shut up, and second, think about how much of what they do ultimately circles back to being done out of motivated self-interest. You might be surprised. Either way, get out there and help, regardless of why, or at least shut up and stop criticizing people out there at least offering something. That sort of criticism could have a chilling effect on any future such acts since they now have to worry about getting slammed for what they're doing, in a world where you live and die by public opinion. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Fun fact about their coffee maker method: Most coffee makers heat the water to about 200F (just shy of boiling at 212F.) The problem is that the boiling point of alcohol is lower at 173F for pure, 100% alcohol; though it is a bit higher for most drinking alcohol due to the water needed for diluting to a more drinkable state. So they essentially boiled their tequila for about 10-15 minutes, removing a good chunk of the alcohol content. Also, when infusing alcohol, putting it in the fridge slows the rate of absorption since liquids dissolve things slower the colder they are. Leaving it in a dark cabinet is preferable to using the fridge

The dump dinner thing is actually pretty cool for people with kids cuz you just put a disposable table cloth on the table and then when everyone is done you just pick up the table cloth and throw it away. Ig you could use a reusable one and throw it in the washer but that would be more mess than it's worth Edit: this is definitely not something meant to do every night lol just when you don't feel like cleaning a bunch of dishes

He made "table tomato soup" which means pouring tomato soup into an indentation in my grandma's kitchen table. I have no idea why Click would do that but apparently we were good buds and my grandma loved the soup (even though none of her tables actually have any indentations like that, let alone for soup).

I remember when I was about 7 or 8, I asked my mum if I could try a bit of cooking and she said ok.... I got everything I liked for ingredients - and put it in a pan and cooked it for about 15 minutes... Yes - it was absolutely disgusting!!! SO she gave me some lessons over the next few weeks and I'm now reasonably accomplished in the kitchen! BTW I've learned a lot more culinary skills in the following 50-plus years!!

@GGysar

The one thing my father explicitly taught me was how he cooked, and I do it like that to this day. Back then, he told me to imagine a taste and then try to get closer to it. That's it, that's all you need to know, imagine a taste, smell and taste spices and ingredients and then mix them, so you get closer to what you want. Start with dishes where you can incrementally add spices (sauces, are good for that) and once you know how ingredients behave you can easily transfer that knowledge to other stuff like meatballs. Cooking like that is SO much easier and often better than just following a recipe and the reason I never had such an experience like you have described, not even as a child, because even as a child I could imagine how for example chocolate and salami taste together... eh, not too bad actually, should be edible. xD The rest is just learning how to cut stuff, how different stuff behaves when heated or cooled, and how to bulk out meals without losing (too much) flavour.

British cuisine in a nutshell (according to the internet) 1. Conquered half the world looking for spices only to decide they didn’t like them 2. Kept foods desperately created during war time rationing as staple foods (beans on toast) 3. Hates their own food so much the national food is severely less spicy Indian food And I don’t want to judge the entirety of Britain’s cooking capabilities based on one poorly researched show, but please stay away from all cuisine outside of Greater Europe. Past incidents on the Great British Bake Off have proven you cannot be left alone with our recipes let alone a singular avocado. Just please, be better than them look up a tutorial before attempting.

for the octopus in gelatin this reminds me of my great aunts who always cooks us "aspics", which are basically cooked food encased in gelatin (not sweet gelatin, its salty) It doesnt taste bad but its just.... food in gelatin. she used to put ham and veggies in there, in small portions. The reason why they did this was in part for conservation. The gelatin keeps the food from turning bad as fast as it usually would, for food to eat on the go etc. I also allowed her to make a batch and keep it out She used mainly ham and other meats but I believe there were seafood versions (which makes sense as seafood would turn bad faster) So huh yeah usually the food in the gelatin is cooked. not a whole ass raw octopus
