Ran Yakumo (Whose name holds no relation to running)) is the Ex-boss of the game Perfect Cherry Blossom, the 7th installment of the Touhou Project. The Touhou Project is a series of danmaku shooters. Go and check the wiki (link at end of description) for more information relating danmaku and Touhou.
Ran, whose name means "indigo" as in the color, is the shikigami of the youkai of boundaries and gaps Yukari Yakumo, who I'll beat... later. A shikigami is practically a familiar in the sense that is a servant to another being, in this case Yukari. I always thought of Ran as a very plain character (except for the mystery of how a Kyūbi ended as Yukari's pet/servant/slave). Even her design is plain, except for that weird hat of her. Is not my favorite character at all, not even in the top 30... Probably. A lot of Ran's spell cards make reference to Japanese culture, so I wont bother on explaining each of them. Go check the wiki for that.
Ran is probably the most difficult ex-boss I had faced so far. And she's not that kind of "WHY ARE YOU SO ****ING HARD FOR NO REASON?" kind of hard (Like Suwako and Ex-Chen). Is a "hard" firmly supported by the fact that she's a shikigami with a shikigami. You know you're strong when you, being a summoning, can summon another summoning. Now that's hardcore right there.
But seriously, what makes her worst is that her favorite kind of danmaku is the kunai danmaku. Their hitbox is practically the entire sprite, which create a psychological barrier that tells you "That's a big danmaku"... but is not. They are numerous though. On the objective side, I think what makes her hard is not only that her danmaku are numerous, but the patterns themselves require a lot of fast reflexes and precise hitbox movement. Still, I believe her to be the hardest so far, but obviously not the hardest of them all.
This wasn't exactly my favorite ex-battle either. It was the most challenging, but Flandre's and Mokou's were more epic while Suwako's and Mokou's more fun. Somehow, Ran's spell cards and the background seem so... uninteresting and plain. I dunno, maybe there was too much indigo kunai for my taste. Even if Mokou had too much red, red is more interesting than indigo...

Actually it had a less controversial meaning at first, old tribes used the symbol as a sign of peace, but Hitler saw it as a sign of power from the gods and he had a goal to take every relic from the past to gain absolute power. Ran and Yukari's hitboxes are inactive during Princess Tenko Illusion and Yukari's Spiriting Away. With this in mind, they become insanely easy. Basically, do not move when yukari/ran teleports on you but move away to the side at the last second so that you redirect the bullets aimed towards you. Even sakuya does enough damage to end the card quickly

@raak1010 Thanks so much for the tips on the characters. I actually ended up defeating Ran today, and under the most strange circumstances. I haven't even attempted to fight Ran for a while, and I never used Marisa A (She's obviously the most suicidal after all) But out of nowhere, I ended up defeating her today. My first Extra Boss completion, with such a suicidal character...and on top of that, I had 4 extra lives still in stock! I have no idea what gave me such a random boost in luck...

The only spells Moku has on me is Hollow Giant "Woo" and Hourai "Fujiyama Volcano. Flying Phoenix is easy, all you need to do is spread out the aimed birds to one side and then dodge the 3 fixed birds rinse repeat.

At first I tried using Marisa (Who I usually use) But then I beat the game with Reimu and tried her, but she's not working to well either. Maybe I should beat the game with Sakuya so I follow Raak's example...

It's called Mountain Of Faith, literally. The problem with it is mostly that your bombs are mostly nullified and you have to be right down the bottom, dodging like hell, Raak has a video of it, just type in raak1010 kanako and you should get it :D

Ran isn't very epic, they save the epic for Yukari. At least in terms of music, since her attacks are minor variations on Ran's. (Well, probably vice versa) It would be nice to see another Touhou game with a Phantasm, preferably one that isn't a rehash of the extra.

Lommy Heron FFotD: her theme was supposed to be Yukari's, but Zun realised that it sounded a bit to cheerful. So he gave it to Ran instead and made the more chaotic Necrofantasia for Yukari. Do it's pretty dumb that he made Ran's attacks just nerfed versions of Yukari's (yeah yeah I get what's supposed to mean, but still).

i can't beat ran because of my stupid laptop.. multiple times i have tried, i seem to survive more with Marisa. the cards i keep losing on it Princess Tenko and Ultimate buddhist. my Laptop arrowkeys don't let me move upleft and downright... so i have to keep going down then right then down then right, or up the left then up then left really fast..
