My 7 lb rabbit who is four years old loves her Sherwood adult pellets. I feed her the blue bag, about two tablespoons each day for past year, and scatter it through a cat tunnel so she scavenges and exercises more. Since I’ve had her, she’s never had any GI issues or wet poops. Your video was very helpful, since I didn’t understand the new changes Sherwood was doing in the new products.

Thanks for this info. I just adopted my bunny last weekend and have been feeding the Sherwood green bag. I’ve cut back so as not to over feed it to him. It’s hard because he goes crazy for these pellets and it makes me want to give him more. He also eats them really fast but I’ve been putting them in a ball that he pushes around and it dispenses a few pellets at a time so he can’t eat them all in 2 seconds. This video was very informative. Thank you.

Nutrition is so important to all types of life. I have some mini rex but I also have some larger breeds like NZ crosses and silver fox. My mini gets under 1/4th cup and my rabbits that are 8+lbs get 1/4-1/2 a cup of pellets depending on current weight and type. Plus free fed hay all day. A lot of people tend to WAY over feed pets and just fill up bowls. This isn't safe for rabbits. Preventing GI Status and making sure rabbits don't become obese is super important!

My bunny thumps by her food bowl every time she wants food, which makes me feel bad thinking she’s hungry and I over feed her. I’m so glad I came across this video because it showed me it’s better for my bun’s future to understand the importance of overfeeding. I just ordered “Sherwood Free Choice Timothy Pallets” on amazon and i’m going to start measuring her food by her weight. Thank you. ❤️ Do you have any recommendations for transitioning her diet? I don’t know if it’s okay from immediately going from a very large diet to a more balanced one because she isn’t used to eating that little.

Thanks for this detailed discussion on pellets. Everyone need to read the labels! Agree with many of these point. Used Sherwood pellets for years. Local company for me and my bun mom friends. They do sell in IFA stores here. My buns do scarf them all down at once, but think because they are in pairs and it is competitive. Give a few greens in morning - yes! Rarely fruits or sugary treats - check! A few additional tips. 1) refill buns hay 2-3 times per day. Toss the hay they aren’t eat into the compost pile. 2) split measured pellets into 2 smaller feedings (due to scarfing). 3) Give bonded buns each their own little pile at each feeding so you know who is eating what.

As always, I appreciate your experienced input, Robin. :) I wasn't aware that Sherwood is available in some brick-and-mortar stores, but I'm guessing that is due to proximity to Utah where Sherwood is located? I understand Sherwood is building a brand new facility with the intent to expand distribution eventually, which is fantastic!
@robinflinchbaugh3389
@robinflinchbaugh3389 3 жыл бұрын
@@HooksHollands Yes, I assume due to proximity. The plus is that is so much less expensive to buy in store than buying on Amazon or from Sherwood online. With the rescue, our discount is similar to the in store price. The IFA stores only sell the free-feed and the baby pellets, not all the products from Sherwood. Sherwood does give a great discount on supplements if you buy 10 - but you probably know that ;) Had one of my buns have a mass removed from her back this week. She is doing well. Interested to see what the pathology report says. Best part was that the vet taught me how to give SubQ fluids. This bun is 8 years old and may have some underlining issues. Need to do labs again when stitches are taken out. Looking forward to your herd update. I know that you have had a run of sadness lately, but I hope that doesn't dissuade you from continuing to have bunnies. The knowledge you are gaining from all these challenges will benefit all your future buns!!
@HooksHollands
@HooksHollands 3 жыл бұрын
I would love to learn how to give SubQ fluids, as it makes me so nervous that I will harm the bunny and not administer it properly. Glad to hear your bunny's surgery went well, and I hope the pathology results are optimistic. Enjoy your Sherwood proximity discount, ha ha. I'm jealous! ;)

@@HooksHollands I would ship you some but the shipping is what is expensive! Will let you know how it goes with her health. Mass was just below the skin and well contained so hope it is not a big deal in the end. Just a long day for her and for me! Buns have a lot of loose fur around the shoulders so not too difficult to give subQ fluids or injections, but yes, there is small potential to screw it up and have a bad outcome. Take care!

Thanks for the Canadian resource for Sherwood! Yes, the baby pellet is free-feed since it's only for the first three months of their lives while they are rapidly growing. I use it for nursing mamas too. Since Sherwood only has one baby formula, it doesn't tend to confuse people like their adult varieties thankfully. :)

That's a good question to discuss with your veterinarian and make your own decision about. Personally, I've learned that the pellets do supply certain vitamins and nutrients often not consumed in hay, so I continue to give Sherwood pellets daily though only about 1/4 cup per Holland lop.

I’ve had rabbits for 25 years and I’ve found that my rabbits have a tendency to get stasis with a high veggie diet, more so than feeding them pellets. I give them half a cup of parsley or comfrey in the morning and 1/4 cup of Sherwood pellets throughout the day as a foraging treat. Good quality pellets are key.

Hi Diane, so sorry for the loss of your bunnies. Thank you so much for this video, this explains a lot. I'm desperate to feed our rabbit Sherwood pellets, but I can't get them here in the UK. I contacted the company, but they told me they were unavailable here at the moment. I can't seem to find pellets here in the UK that does not have grains, soy or sweetners in them. We have a 4 year old mini lop house rabbit, Gizmo. We feed him 2 egg cups of pellets, one in the morning and one at night, Burgess Excel Indoor Adult Rabbit Nuggets, plus unlimited Oxbow timothy hay and water. We have had several incidents of GI Statis, and got him through every time by acting quickly and with constant care. I had a feeling that the pellets could be the issue, so we have been trying to reduce them. Any advice on when or if Sherwood pellets would be available in the UK or a good alternative pellet, would be very much appreciated. Gizmo is part of our family, he gives us so much love and we want to give him the best and healthiest life possible.
@HooksHollands

You might be able to find Oxbow Garden Select in the UK or a non-American brand without grain, soy, or sweeteners. The most important would be lots of good hay, you don't really need many pellets (they do add nutrients that may be lacking in the hay).

Actually, my intent is to 100% alert people to the dangers of overfeeding measured pellets in order to save bunnies' lives. After losing my bunny last week to stasis symptoms and realizing that she was eating the maximum amount of measured pellets for her weight (and that this could have contributed to her death), I wanted to prevent this from happening to others. I feel Sherwood is the healthiest food option, but their numerous formulas are confusing to consumers. I attempted to clarify this while also sharing the tips and information Dr. Sherwood relayed to me. Whether people buy Sherwood or not or buy directly from the company's website or my Amazon links, I do not care. Sherwood does not provide me with any compensation for this video or recommending their products. My goal is to educate and share what I feel is the healthiest option for a rabbit's diet, and people can discuss this with their veterinarians and decide what is best for their rabbits.

💕/••\ Thank you so very kindly Diane, this is a very critical topic💕!!~* I was oblivious that a measured pellet food even existed!!~* I have fed any bunnies that I had that were under a year of age, pellets with an Alfalfa base, then transition to Timothy pellets. As an adult, my first rabbit died at 4ys of age, due to kidney problems, the narcropsy indicated severe sludge in the urinary track😢 Devistated i tried to come up with a healthier game plan for future bunnies, soooo As some of my other rabbits fortunately became very elderly (over8ys) I moistened the pellets by adding a bit of fresh water to them because, just enough to make them fall apart, (I personally have a theory) : when rabbits are not drinking lots of water & they are consuming dry pellets, it MAY DRY the urinary track out more....the pellets absorbs a lot of moisture, and if that moisture goes into the poops it is lessening the moisture going to the kidneys & bladder!?~* Some bunnies are better at water drinking than others, much like their humans I suppose... just a non expert opinion!!~* Again Thank You for This most Excellent Video!!~* I will be certainly checking out Sherwoods foods. 💕💕/••\

I saw your post on Facebook about Hazel. I’m sorry you lost another rabbit. Could your rabbit have had fly strike or picked up something else from eating outside, on the ground, in the pen? If a parasite gets into their digestive system it can cause seemingly similar symptoms.

Ok. After watching this video, I immediately ordered the Free Choice pellets. My bun absolutely hates it and was completely spoiled by the not so healthy pellets. I’m still trying to transition but I feel like I just wasted $40 on a bag of Sherwood Free Choice and she will never get use to it… This is ( Vitakraft VitaSmart Complete Nutrition Pet Rabbit Food, 8 lb) what I thought was a good choice but it’s not. But she is in love with the sweetness and the little different flavors and shapes of some of the pellets. She is a little over weight and I think it’s because of this. Sh eats a lot of hay so that’s great and hearty salads twice a day but she wants her pellets but won’t eat this Sherwood… any suggestions on how to get her to like this pellet?

My 3 year old adopted doe had so many gi issues when I first got her I used the oxbow digestive supplements, slowly giving her greens because she didn't tolerate them and switched her to oxbow garden selects, no more gi issues. The best hay I have found is 2nd cut timothy blend locally then small pet select grass hay. Oxbow hay never quite agrees with both my bunnies 😣

I woke up one day and there was diarrhea all over my buns play pen and all over her face and legs and bottom. She passed a few hours later. There was. No warning sign she was full of energy and licking me right before bed and I actually went to sleep late that day and played with her and went to bed around 3am and saw her again at 9:30 am and was in shock. When I saw her I knew it was bad. I heard about gi stasis and thought okay so they say give them critical care so I tried that and she seemed okay I cleaned her up dried her off and bundled her up and she was moving around but soon after she could not eat or drink even through a syringe and when I gently massaged her tummy this mucus diarrhea was gushing out of her and her tummy was making a strange sound like it was fillled with water it was so weird. I tried to reach out to a vet near and they couldn’t help and my whole family had Covid at that time. It was worst timing. She got very weak and eventually buy 6:30pm her body gave out and right before she crawled up into my neck even though she was so weak and said her last goodbyes. Someone told me because she was so young and everything i described it sounded like bloat they said I had no idea what that was but they said the change I made in her pellets too soon caused a change her in tummy. I bought pellets from my local pet store and when I as the ingredients too I didn’t realize how bad they are. I feel so bad I only had her for 10 days and was not expecting that to happen and so soon. But was told bunny tummy are very sensitive up until 11 weeks and any changes even minor ones to their food can cause problems in their gut.

I love your channel. I live in an apartment with a balcony. I don’t have a yard, for that reason I take my bunnies to a park 15 minutes away just to hop around. I use a fleas and ticks product to protect them. Do you think that’s not a good idea?. Taking them to a park? Thank you
@HooksHollands
@HooksHollands 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, with the risks of RHDV2 (rabbit disease), coupled with the flea/tick medicines that likely aren't the best for bunnies' bodies to detox the chemicals, I would personally let them run around my apartment for their exercise and avoid the risks. Just my two cents. :)

If a grain-free, soy-free, sweetener-free pellet isn't available, you just have to find the best pellet you have access to. I have heard a lot of bunnies doing well on the Oxbow Garden Select.

The bottom line is that rabbits don't need pellets. Pellets should be an afterthought and fed sparingly. I've never had a vet (unless they are selling something) tell me rabbits need pellets. I agree timing when feeding pellets/veggies is helpful. Rabbits are like kids, they will always eat desert first/only.
@HooksHollands
@HooksHollands 3 жыл бұрын
A high quality pellet provides vitamins, minerals, and nutrients not found in hay/veggies alone. Many rabbits also don't digest veggies well or this causes reduced hay/water consumption and thus a lack of proper fiber in the cecum. I realize there are different opinions on this, just sharing my two cents and what Dr. Sherwood's research has concluded.
@rabbitxonxtoast

Hook's Hollands have you ever researched fodder for rabbits? There is this theory that traditionally rabbits were fed a diet of pellets to gain weight for food. I don’t personally practice it because it’s too much work for my crazy schedule. But it certainly changed my perspective of pellets.

What is the best and safest chew toy for a rabbits tooth reduction in your opinion?
@HooksHollands

Blocks of untreated pine works for some bunnies with teeth issues, but not all bunnies like those. Thick 1st cutting hay often is effective as well as apple sticks or willow branches (if untreated with pesticides).

Do you recommend alfalfa hay for baby rabbits? My rabbits are 3 and 5 months old.
@HooksHollands
@HooksHollands 3 жыл бұрын
I personally wouldn't feed a straight alfalfa hay except possibly to young babies (up to 3/4 months old) who needed to put on weight. The pellet I feed my babies has alfalfa, and they do fine on this and timothy/orchard hay. Talk with your veterinarian about your concerns too. :)

I’ve tried feeding the Sherwood complete to my two sweet bunnies, but they refuse to even touch the stuff. :( Even mixed into the pellets they do eat, they will eat around the Sherwood pellets. Silly bunnies. I give them Nutrena NatureWise. They regulate pretty good on their own how much of these they eat, and they eat plenty of the Timothy Hay I provided for them.
@HooksHollands
@HooksHollands 3 жыл бұрын
Dr. Sherwood had this advice about transitioning bunnies on the "yummy sweet food" to Sherwood: Slowly reduce the pellet amount of the current feed. Your bunny should increase amount of hay eaten. Once pellets are at a minimum and greatly desired, try adding the Sherwood. Most bunnies will now readily accept it. Note this doesn't work with bunnies who will not eat the hay when original pellets are reduced.

I definitely had to give my bun some adjusting time with these pellets as well. But after she started eating them happily I noticed she would eat more hay and she would actually go for the hay first sometimes! But she always wants her daily vitamins too haha.

Thank you so much for this video. My bunny DOES NOT EAT hay AT ALL! I have tried many brands, many tastes and the outcome has been the same. After watching your video I think I’m going to stop feeding him pellets, because that’s all he wants. But I am scared that he will loose weight and eventually get sick? I am also looking at stores here in Mexico to see if I can buy Sherwood’s pellets. Any help that you can give I’d truly appreciate. I have also taken my bun to vet many times and she is aware of this. Thank you!
@HooksHollands
@HooksHollands 3 жыл бұрын
You might first try cutting way back on the pellets for a few days, and if he eats more hay, then slowly bump the pellets up to the recommended serving based upon his weight. Dr. Sherwood assured me most bunnies could just eat hay for 2-4 weeks and it's good for them, but it doesn't work for a bunny who won't eat any hay, so be careful about that.
@klachi7
@klachi7 3 жыл бұрын
@@HooksHollands Thank you for your prompt reply! Just one last thing by "cutting pellets way back" do you mean not giving him any at all? If that's the case, I just started doing that today. I went out to cuy some fresh grass to see if he would eat that instead, and feed him a bowl of salad, but zero pellets. I really wish I had the option to buy the pellets you mentioned in your video, I really can't stand seeing my bun getting skinny.
