hello, im in need of your advice. i know its been years since your video. I just wanna ask you, my bunny is 8 y/o now, he has never this sick before, little to no appetite for three days since friday so i took him to vet on sunday, the vet gave him shots: supplement, quick IV fluids and anti inflammation (did blood check and the hetero which is the white blood cell is high), he also had fever. he looked more energized and could eat lil bit of hay after that. he is hungry but refused to eat still. up until this morning i still feed him the critical care and the meds, he took it a like real champ, im proud of him but the hay is remain untouched. it is still heartbreaking because he used to make a mess with his food every time but lately he is so quiet, i really miss his healthy behavior. so, is it okay to just go on with the med (vet diagnosed that it is the bloat) or should i also get the apptite restore? he already peed after the vet visit and pooped a bit this morning

I don't see a problem with syringe feeding a bit of Sherwood's appetite restore (I mix it in with the recovery food syringe), but I'd advise speaking about this with your veterinarian, and if you have pain meds for your bunny, definitely keep giving those as recommended. It sounds like there could potentially be a complex situation occurring, plus given his age, that likely increases his fragility. Best of luck to you...I've been through this many times with bunnies off their feed, and it's so stressful. I hope he pulls through. With my bunnies, the first sign that they're getting better is starting to nibble on hay, and I'll give them a dandelion leaf or parsley as a test to if they're feeling better. If they eat it, they're usually on the mend, but it can take days of syringe feeding before this stage, and I keep giving daily pain meds until they're eating/peeing/pooping pretty normally. 🥰

As for your question of what Aspergillus niger fermentation product is, I did some Google work and it looks like the mold A. niger creates acids (citric and gluconic, specifically), and hydrolytic enzymes (which break down plant cells) which are apparently used in animal feed to serve as a digestive aid, and in industrial applications. The products are generally recognized as safe for human consumption (though I do wonder if the added acids might not cause ulcers in a rabbit?) I absolutely agree that they should understand what they're putting in an animal's food, though!! They also have a peculiar way of writing Ceylon cinnamon...?

I was comparing the brands' ingredients and I noticed that the majority of Sherwood's vitamins are chelated. This is HUGE in regards to absorbability and the body's ability to use metabolize them vs your average synthetic vitamins. It's also probably what accounts for the majority of the higher cost. Thanks for recommending them - now that I'm aware of them, I'll definitely go with that. I suspect a lot of people are going with Oxbow vs Sherwood for the price, but when I calculated it out it's about $15 a month for a Holland Lop using the measured pellet (if you get the 10lb bag...I was assuming 2.5 cups per lb, there's a chance it's closer to 3), so...really not as exorbitant as the sticker price per bag would lead a person to believe. :)

That part about hay meaning the bunnies are more hydrated because they drink more water doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Dry food requires rehydration which in itself would reduce the water available to the bunny. And if the greens have more water in them, then you wouldn't need as much more to keep the animal hydrated. It's like saying kibble dogs or cats are more hydrated than fresh or canned food animals (which definitely isn't true. On the contrary, it keeps them in a constant state of mild dehydration.) Otherwise, definitely listening, I know you know your stuff in general.

What people don't get is that if the responsible breeders stop, the unethical breeders won't, and quality is going to absolutely nosedive.

I'm so confused: #1) I am going to changey feed. Currently they ONLY want pellets They are finicky about the hay and leady greens. They act hungry for more pellets ALL DAY. i feed at dawn around 6a and dusk around 7p. They act like they are starving for pellets every few hours. I feed based on theor weight and usually give an extra 1/4 cup to appease them. #2) As to holding bunnies. As prey animals they are obviously very scared in the early stages. They don't want you to pick them up. BIT I need to clean their cage and/or transfer them to/from their exercise pen. Any suggestions? So far I just sweep around them and move very slow not to scare them they come over and smell the sweeper and my hand. Cute but very inefficient. I am trying to wait until they feel comfortable.

Can you suggest a good breeder near Eddyville, KY? My boyfriend and i want a rabbit when our financial situation improves, and Holland Lops are his favorite breed. We need someone who can help us choose one that hopefully won't have the breed's common genetic issues, and I really want to find one that treats its bunnies well ❤
@HooksHollandsАй бұрын
I'm sorry, but I am not familiar with any Holland breeders in KY. Years ago, people were using Hoobly (website) to advertise their animals - not sure if that's still popular. Still, you'd have to do your homework to weed out the type of breeder you desire. :)

Please!! To any rabbit owners, buy critical care!! Its one of the most important things that you will need when it comes to rabbits when stuff like this happens. Its hard to find in store and amazon has it, its a little pricey but you need to be willing to pay!

ALSO never even force feed your rabbit. Especially if you have no idea why it's in STASIS to begin with. The pyloric junction is often plugged with undigested food because you're over feeding your rabbit Food pellets expand exponentially in the stomach.
@slappychap9692 ай бұрын
99% of stasis is from over feeding pellets. The rabbit stomach is no larger than an almond. Depending upon breed it gets smaller. Or feeding garbage sugary food. That builds gas as the sugar ferments. .

I have always wanted a bunny but I just dont understand why not sale them when they are 2-3 weeks or maybe even 4 weeks I want to raise my bunny I do not want to wait till 8 weeks thats the only reason I will not buy a bunny Im not waiting 8 weeks
@HooksHollands2 ай бұрын
Rabbits are very fragile, and it's not safe to wean the babies from the mother until around 8 weeks. They need to be warm and drink the mother's nutrient rich milk.

The shot of the dog guarding Timmy's grave (or memorial spot?) is just so sweet. We don't give animals nearly enough credit for their ability to tune into the emotions of their humans. I'm not sure if they truly understand the idea of graves, but they can clearly recognize when a spot is important to their humans, and they want to take care of it.

Thank you! I’m adopting an adult bunny next month. I used to have bunnies as a kid but we had to keep them outside in a hutch… and well… that didn’t go well. Anyway, she is getting the R(V)HD2 vaccinations (this is why it’s taking a while) . Do you think this is necessary to keep up as our exotic vets in our state (MA) don’t offer them.

My bunny snapped right out of his little stasis episode mid video. Got it! So when we're in stasis we have to just watch this video and he will magically be cured. 🤣Also the bun montage at the end of the video! Glad to see it's just a cat thing to be somewhat disgusted by buns LOL. My cat does the same. She doesn't hate the bunny, doesn't see him as prey or a playmate, she is just simply disgusted by him

Very informative and nice to have this around. I had a vet say they stopped using metacam because some studies say metacam might not be the best pain medication due to the fact that some rabbits can be more sensitive to it. We used injectable Buprenorphine from the vet and then took home oral suspension Gabapentin, which also helps with stress. The vet said he was still using Metacam/Meloxicam up until a few years ago after some more recent information came out. Just interesting, but again I appreciate all the information and especially that you constantly reiterate that people should contact/go to the vet immediately. Thank you for your time and care for bunnies. <3
