Great job. For my bunnies with black nails a flash light does not always reveal the quick so I guestimate where I need to trim and then gently apply pressure with the clippers to see if it is too tender (bunny will pull foot back). Then I have left a little mark and I know to trim closer to the tip. I also burrito but I sit on the floor just in case he startles.

I forgot to mention about applying pressure to test where the quick might be for darker nails. Thanks for adding that! :)

I find that for really nervous or wiggly rabbits, you can swaddle them and place them belly-down in your lap and just file their nails with a regular nail file made for humans. It's a slower process, but a lot safer and less stressful for a rabbit.

That ending was SO relaxing! Idea for bunny parents with crappy eyesight: put an old pillow (or a towel covered pillow) on a table and puff it up around the bun to provide secure support. Use as many pillows as you need to raise the bunny to where you can safely see enough to trim. I use several down pillows that make a sort of snuggle cloud!

Actually you just put his favourite cloth on the table and put the bunny on top. Hold him a bit close to your body and the job will be easily done. No need to turn him on his back this will cause unnecessary stress. I use only 5mins to do my first trim with my boy.

i did ask my vet about the whole trancing and laying on the back thing, she's very specialized with rabbits and great. Extra education legally for rabbits. She said it all depends on the rabbit and should be done with vet supervision. Some rabbits are fine with it and others aren't.

try the burrito method. it prevents them from twisting and kicking. I have 5 bunnies and I always clip their nails on their backs and never had a problem. some bunnies like to be fed treats during. Give him pets also. It should be fine.

Not trying to be bossy but I would recommend the howcast video on how to trim nails. They make it seem really easy and maybe you'd prefer the method over the one you have now since you have to put the bunny on its back. Again not trying to sound controlling just an idea.

@hannabubbles55226 жыл бұрын
Rehana Jamil it depends if they are siblings or introduced at a joint age.
@ohitzjett6 жыл бұрын
It's really better to keep two females together. The males will fight when they reach maturity and then need to be neutered. Females bond easier, but It's best to keep a male and female pair together that is fixed. You will have the best luck with a male and female pair than a male and male pairing. The longest I've had males get along is 6 months and that was brother and brother. They also got along just fine with their father until they reached 9 months of age.
@jaricas85785 жыл бұрын
After male/female pairs, male/male are easiest to bond! you just want to make sure they’re both neutered, an un neutered bunny will be very territorial and they will fight :)
@nevaehspets65515 жыл бұрын
Rehana Jamil Only if they’re both neutered so they don’t attack each other (: also I know the requirement is 8 ft.² but I would recommend bigger for them! Also the age matters! If you’re getting two babies then they will get along fine!

I never have to trim my rabbits nails as they both play outside (secured area). They hop around on the patio and that keeps their nails a good size!
@scottfirman6 жыл бұрын
We use the song soft kitty warm kitty,but change it to bunny. Yes we sing to our bunny,he calms down after his paws stop twitching,it is usually ok to do this. Its best to move quickly so as not to stress him or her out. We alway put our bunny on his back. he knows what is going on. I keep super glue handy. Its best to locate the quick then slide the clippers back. I use a one two method to trim his nails. by just gently pushing the sissors together if you are anywhere near the wuick,bunny will move. So first time is just pressure,then second time is a full clip. I have hit the quick mabe three times. It really upsets them but a quick dab of glue stops the bleeding instantly. My wife usually holds Mr. Spock singing soft bunny and stroking his head. Bunnys will go into a "State" on their back. If Spock gets too upset,or struggles,we abort the subject. Its best to come back again the next day. Ours usually tolerates this once a month is when we do ours. Keeping a ceramic tile in a corner of their cage to scratch on helps bunny maintain their own nails too. Use an unglazed tile or a red kitchen tile works best.

So essentially trimming a rabbits nails is similar to doing a dogs nails when they are younger (until they are used to holding still) and have lots of thick fur.

I am soooo happy you posted this tutorial! I have been hesitant when it comes to trimming my bunny's nails because he didn't come from a place where he was held a lot. I've had him about a month and he is warming up to me but still gets scared if he thinks you're going to pick him up. I'm worried he might kick and fall off my lap when I'm trying to trim his nails. Is there any way to calm his fears about being cradled or should I just stick to going to the vet every month???

Awesome video I’m gonna have to give this a try the mesh fabric is an awesome hack! Does this work well for pregnant does I have a couple of does in my rabbitry that are quite the grumpy mommies and hate to have their nails cut while they’re pregnant but it’s a must! Would love to see a video on tattooing and possibly some on how you get the bunnies ready for a show and what not! Keep the videos coming we love them they’ve been a huge help when we first got started with Holland’s!

I trim my does' nails right after they are bred so I don't have to trim them again until the babies are born. I do not tattoo my bunnies anymore since I don't show. I hated doing that to them, but I know it's necessary for those who show.

Lauren Lockridge I found a cat mitten with the nubbys helps. lightly wet the fur first. Oh,regular rubber gloves( not kitchen gloves,more examination room style) and lighly wet the fur can do the job. I use a mushdash come works too. it has finer close tines. A longer trimming comb will do the same. hold the brush at a slight angle till you feel the come slightly pulling on the fur,thats the purfect angle to remove the loose fur. You dont want to pull ,pull just a slight resistance. Change the angle more if needed.

I have 11 rabbits and I have two questions. One, how do you tell the difference between A black tort and brown? Two, do you have any doe name suggestions, I have 3 unnamed does.
@HooksHollands6 жыл бұрын
Brown isn't an official color, so I'm not sure what to tell you. Black tort will be a burnt sienna (in Crayola terms) color on the back and darken to a black color on the lower sections and ears. Brown could be chocolate, chocolate tort, siamese sable, and others.

1. What's a purebred bunny? 2. If you are to describe this bunny (Jack) to your readers, how'd you put it? 3. Is it okay to buy bunnies 3 months old?
@HooksHollands6 жыл бұрын
A purebred bunny has been bred from several generations (at least) of that specific breed. I only use Hollands in my breeding program who have pedigrees exclusively containing Holland lops. Some people mix breeds for various reasons, but only certain breeds are recognized by ARBA (American Rabbit Breeder's Association) and are showable. Jack is an incredibly outgoing, amiable bunny. Bunnies are usually doing well on their own by 8 weeks of age, and many states have rules about how young rabbits can be sold (8 weeks is usually the minimum age). A 3-month-old bunny is still a very young bunny...it depends on what you're looking for.
@aliciaarden20196 жыл бұрын
Hook's Hollands - Ohio Holland Lops Thank you very much for the quick reply. One more thing please: please describe the physical features of Jack in your own professional language (I am currently working on a story based on Tales of Peter Rabbit, where I'd require description of a bunny just like little Jack (he's so so adorable) and hence that question). What colour is his coat? Orange? Brown? And finally, if it's not a problem, what's your name (surname will do)? Thanks in advance.
@scottfirman6 жыл бұрын
Bunnys that are taken away from their mother too soon may not have all the nessary skills they need to properlt groom themselves. We didnt get ours until 8 weeks,I told the breeder no rush. We already knew he was going to be ours. Its best to select them young,but then come back when they are older,more mature. Let them finish being babys. They will have the rest of their bunny life with you,so never rush.
@BobbyHobby106 жыл бұрын
I think it all depends on the bunny, if the bunny can eat full solid food they are ready to move away from the mother and how far developed they are, some developed slower than others and need to stay longer with their mother. I had to wait for 8 weeks to get my bunny because he hadn't start eating solid food and he's mother had abounded him because he was the runt of the litter. And my rabbit have no problem grooming even thought he never grew up with a bunny mother and he's the cuddles bunny I've ever had.

New bunny mommy here🙋🏻♀️ love your channel, lots of great information. I am so scared to clip my buns nails as he doesn’t seem to like me picking him up, or at least the way I pick him up??? I lift him from his stomach and then put my other hand under his back feet. Anyways, I thought it was bad to put a bunny on its back? All of this information out there and a lot of people saying different things. Like this for example, is this method good for a squiggly bunny?
@HooksHollands5 жыл бұрын
When it comes to trimming nails, you need to get it done however you are able and still keep the bunny secure and as calm as possible. I suggest getting someone to help you and finding the best position to hold your bunny. It only takes a couple minutes, and with gentle petting and a treat afterwards, it can be tolerable for the bunny.
