I knew that any "AI" devices would be total scams seeing how AI still is half-baked. Until AI is consistent and reliable, then there is no way I would spend money on any of these devices. We all saw the demo and people already started mentioning all the red flags. We need to ask why silicon valley has moved to copy the corporate game dev community where they release unfinished products and expect consumers to lap it up?
@matthewdekker60648 ай бұрын
I think Dave is probably right in saying that these companies needed to release the devices early once they heard that Google and Apple are releasing their own AI programs soon. I bet at the start of these projects, the creators had high hopes for what could really be done on these devices, but after plenty of tinkering, etc., they've gotten them to the state they're currently in, which isn't great, but now they've already spent so much money on their development that if they wait to release them until after Google and Apple release theirs, they're just not going to end up making any money. So they released them in this unfinished state because it was basically the only way they could possibly make some money back on the project - and still probably won't be profitable, but it's better than just wasting 100% of it. And maybe they totally plan on continuing to work on things, so the devices will get better and better, but they needed to show them off now to get some interest from people before Google/Apple enter the fray. If they waited, interest would probably be near 0 because these devices can't do what Google/Apple's AI can probably do from within your actual phone. At least, not yet.
@DanKaschel8 ай бұрын
I don't think this is quite true. In my opinion, a good AI pin is possible right now, but it would take enormous expertise and expense to develop for a market that hasn't been proven. It’s a weird trajectory these AI gadget guys are on. The phone has subsumed GPS, camera, watches and mp3 devices, among others. The natural gravity of doing things on the device you’re always carrying is pretty strong. You have to invent/find a use case that really shines as a standalone gadget. Which is that the most useful way for a personal AI to work is if the AI has control of your data and does things on your behalf. This will not be allowed by an app on your phone (unless it is from the manufacturer). We are just now getting to the point where you can run a quantized LLM locally and allow it to be the OS. Two major changes I would've made when designing a device like this would be swap out the scroll wheel for the old but amazing blackberry ball, and if it MUST be that chunky, I'd add ALL the features and hardware from the Flipper Zero. Right now, as it stands, it's useless, may as well buy one, just to disassemble it, reverse engineer the AI learning, and make your own with similar features. This is what happens when someone is too excited about their idea to actually put in effort towards features real consumers would want.

That scroll would be perfect for a game or something. It’s also weird I can connect to Uber but not Uber eats and I have to use door dash. I tried the Uber and it freaked me out cus it doesn’t display anything. Just says they ordered it so I don’t see it useful cus you can’t communicate with the driver or even see if they’re on their way. But then again I wouldn’t really use this for Uber. Gemini is already on my Pixel Fold. It is an option if you look in the play store. Almost exactly the same thing. It does have some of the local access to contacts, but that is all done locally, not on the cloud.

You're missing the point! This is a TOY. A TOY. That's what it is. It's a $200 tech novelty that will be a collectible memento of the early days of AI. For rabbit, this is a data collection operation. YOU are training the model. YOU are making it capable. That's why they don't charge you to use it. This is a quirky, fun, toy that will lead to better things later. Let it be what it is, and enjoy the ride.

The only redeeming feature of this present obsession with AI handhelds is that for the first time since before the smartphone, we’re getting fun and interesting form factors again.

actually you can bake an LLM into a phone. There are a few that are already open source. Chat-GPT powered Siri (offline) is around the corner.
@Electric1008 ай бұрын
9:03 You can get an AI LLM baked into your phone. Android allows you to change your voice assistant from Google Assistant to Gemini. It can access your data just like Google Assistant did. Or, you can get the Gemini app on Android or through the Google app on iOS/iPadOS ; not sure if they can access your data though.

7:00 The funny thing about having AI features from the manufacturers is that we already have many features with voice & text prompts. Then they would just need our authorization to charge to a card on file. I know people who don't even want to use current features. Now with trying to lead the industry, will this lead to forced errors from Google, Apple, Microsoft, and others?

I've been having this conversation over and over. The arguments you get for the Humane and the Rabbit are always along the lines of "Nah, the smartphone is not the end of development in this space. This is something new." Only, it isn't of course. The design is a step backwards and cashing in on hype and FOMO among tech-bros has been done by many startups before.

Remember how shit the first iphone was? Nothing on the app store etc. Yeah it'll be no iphone but still has potential especially for people trying to get away from their phones.

You nailed it when you said 'this should be an app'. Connecting that comment to Google and Apple's control, they probably see it the same way too. Yeah G+A might make a pin or whatever but there's more value embedding an enriched assistant into existing devices and existing software than having to carry secondary or tertiary devices around. There's literally nothing in the Rabbit or the Humane AI pin that makes me think anything other than 'yeah but that's what a phone does now / is for'.
