Microsoft Windows Tip - How to fix Windows key not working on Windows 10 and Windows 11

The Window key opens the start menu immediately without having to drag your mouse cursor over the screen to the Start button. But for some user, whenever they press the Win Key on the keyboard, it does not seem to do anything which can be quite frustrating.
Also, all shortcuts associated with Win key will not work. Like the
Win + I to open Windows Settings,
Win + R to open run dialog box,
Win + Tab to go all Desktop and
Win + D to bring up the desktop will not work.
There is an easy fix for these madness.
Hold the Fn and Win key for 5 seconds, and the let it go.
Now your Win key will start working.

The developers of 3D video card and Microsoft Windows deemed that it is critical to disable the Windows key when a new patch is applied to either the video card driver or the Microsoft Windows operating system. And the main reason for that is to prevent interruption of gaming when and if the Windows key is accidentally pressed during an intense gaming. I believe they are doing it with good faith, but it's a double edged sword for end user. That is my understanding when I spoke to Nvidia and Microsoft Technical Support.

When you see the error message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer," it typically means that the user account you're using doesn't have the necessary privileges to complete the requested action. Try this. 1) Click on Start menu, type "gpedit.msc" in the search bar, right-click on Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator" 2) drill down to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar 3) Look for ""Remove Run menu from Start Menu", and make sure that is disable or "Not Configured". 9/10 times that works. If the Win key on your Dell G15 laptop is not working, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue: 1) PHYSICAL DAMAGE Check if the Win key is physically stuck or damaged. This is more common in mechanical keyboard. Sometimes, debris or dust can get stuck under the key, preventing it from working. Try gently cleaning the key and making sure it moves freely. 2) SOFTWARE LOCKOUT BY OS Make sure that the Win key is not disabled in Windows settings. To check this, go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and make sure that the "Use the Win key for gaming" option is turned off. 3) SOFTWAR LOCKOUT BY 3rd PARTY DRIVER Check if any third-party software or utility is interfering with the Win key functionality. Some programs may override the default behavior of the Win key. Try closing any unnecessary programs and see if the Win key starts working. I own an ASUS Strix, Laptop which includes a third-party software called Armoury Crate. After updating the ASUS driver using this software, I noticed that my Win key was disabled. It may be worth checking if this software is causing the issue for you. 4) KEYBOARD DRIVER UPDATE If none of the above steps work, try updating or reinstalling the keyboard drivers. You can do this by going to Device Manager, finding your keyboard, and selecting "Update driver" or "Uninstall device" and then restarting your computer. If you have tried all of these steps and the Win key still doesn't work, it may be a hardware issue and you may need to contact Dell support for further assistance. Good luck!

I am wondering if you have tried the On-Screen keyboard Ctrl key. In order to launch on-screen keyboard, you hold down the windows key + R. On the run dialog box, type osk To launch the onscreen keyboard application. Try pressing the control key on the on screen keyboard and the press w, q or r. If the windows behave appropriately, which means that something wrong mechanically with your keyboard or you need a keyboard driver update. Let me know how you pan out.

It's a bit hard pressed to find the model number if you don't have any stickers or anything attached to it. For what it is worth, some keyboard has a special key with a company logo. Like for example Steel Series keyboard have a Steel Series logo as one of the key. Does that apply to your keyboard?

If it's the ASUS motherboard and/or ASUS system in some form, I'm pretty sure it comes with Armoury Crate software. If you launch the? Armoury Crate software, at the bottom right-hand side of the application, you will see a spot where can enable and disable their windows key. When you upgrade your Microsft Windows operating system or Armoury Crate software, the Windows key get disabled automatically. I and my colleague have an ASUS laptop, and it does disabled the Windows key every time operating system is updated. I hope that tip helps.

That is because your system enters a Game Mode. When that happens, it disables the Windows key. This is done in good faith by developer to prevent gaming experience interruption if and when the Windows key is accidentally pressed.

For the "Steel Series 100 Apex" keyboard, you will have to hold the "SteelSeries" key and then tap the "Windows" key. The "Steel Series" key (with Steel Series logo) is on the right-hand side of the keyboard, between the right-hand side "Windows" key and right-hand side CTRL key (two rows below the ENTER key). I tested it again on one of our "Steel Series Apex" keyboard, and it worked for us. Please let me know if it worked for you as well.

Mine worked but with the hyperx hx kb6aqx You can lock any key by pressing FN + F12 + Windows Key (Or Key desired to lock) Thanks though

When was the last time you upgraded your video card driver? That update normally triggers Windows key to be disable. Do you have access to the Nvidia card software? You can also enable using Nvidia application.
