This is exactly why I recently built a squirrel nesting box, myself. Raccoons raided squirrel nests in trees one night- it was horrible! One of the orphans started hanging around my deck. She was so small and didn’t seem to know how to be a squirrel, so I started feeding her and eventually built her a pretty deep nest box with predator guards. Trying to entice her to move into it now, and hoping the larger squirrels (who bully her) will not take it over, instead! The point of my comment…thank you for the video showing how easily (and how far) raccoons can reach in to get at squirrels…while they are sleeping! Squirrels have it tough, that’s for sure!

Absolutely! Thanks for watching! Luckily most the time I’ve noticed that if a raccoon hits the house the squirrels hear it and dash. Not everytime. But that’s what I’ve experienced most. I’ve witnessed 2 times it trying to grab them and there was plenty depth and room for them to steer clear of the coons hands. Obviously they were scared, but they were clear of danger Thanks again for watching. Good luck with your orphan!

@@mybackyardfriends7326 Update on my orphaned squirrel & box: She was happy to eat while sitting on the box’s deck, but didn’t show any interest in living in it. Then FOUR younger males moved into it whenever it was really cold at night😢. However, when it began to warm up (Texas), she took it over and began sleeping in it at night. Soon I would see her fiercely defending it from other squirrels. And today, I believe I heard a baby squirrel in there!! ❤️🐿

Wouldn't it be funny to have a speaker or something to turn on when the raccoon shows up at the nest. Could scare it right out the tree😂. They carry mange, rabies, and especially worms that kill squirrels. Not to mention they attack people when frightened.

The camera actually has a talk option. So I totally would do that if I was awake and saw it happening. Raccoon visits are always in the early AM
