This is really, really good. The more I learn about genetics and 'race' the more I realize just how utterly full of shit the 'realists' are. The reason why race isn't discussed anymore in science is A: The concept has been so heavily smashed it isn't funny, B: The sheer political and social ramifications are horrified if the wrong people butcher the data for the wrong reasons (and we've already seen it happen MANY times over the past 130 years). It has nothing to do with Political Correctness trying to hide an inconvenient truth. I wish they had some links that showed what a load of hogwash the Bell Curve is. I understand the racists won't buy it because they're so hell bent on believing that they (or specifically Northern Europeans) were behind every single achievement in human history and seem to think it's an insult that they were behind on anything at one point.

Hi, I was the researcher in this discussion. I admit it, I cringed when I listened to this part again too! And I regret not following chat in retrospect because they had a number of good comments and criticisms. Concerning Asperger's, my purpose was to discuss how difficult it can be to find a genetic basis of complex traits. In the study I cited, Asperger's has ONE known genetic marker, and that marker is actually present in 78% of the population (whereas 78% of the population definitely does not have Asperger's). I hope this illustrates (to some extent) the difficulty in finding causal genetic variants in modern genetic studies. But we're working on ways to do a better job of it.

This PhD genetics researcher sure does have a difficult time explaining rudimentary undergraduate biology concepts. Its fucking scary to think that someone running a university lab propelling articles into the scientific colloquium doesn't understand the distinction between mutation and genetic drift.
@alexhopwood87 жыл бұрын
He's not explaining anything that is extraordinarily complicated. That's why I gave the example of genetic drift, wherein he struggled at giving a completely wrong definition of genetic drift. Keep in mind that if this guy is who he says he is, he should be equipped to teach at a university level and he fucked up AP Bio material.
@sprddrss7 жыл бұрын
Hi John Cena, I'm the researcher in the discussion. As Funnyannita says, I do sometimes struggle to explain complicated concepts in a simple way, which is why feedback during and after a conversation is often useful. So it sounds like you think I made some mistakes, could you elaborate a bit? From memory, I believe I talked about how genetic drift is the random accumulation of mutations over time due to random effects rather than natural selection. The wikipedia definition says that it's "the change in the frequency of an allele in a population due to random sampling of organisms". I think most people have difficulty understanding "variation in allele frequencies" so I tried to discuss it in slightly simpler terms (which I think were close to the truth). I also tried to talk about fixation, but I had difficulty explaining it in a simple way. At any rate I'd be happy to hear your suggestions. Thanks for the comments.
@alexhopwood87 жыл бұрын
Here is what was said when defining genetic drift: "...changes in the genetic sequence, genetic code, due to random chance." You should immediately recognize the problem here, where a fairly accurate layman definition of mutation is ascribed to the concept of genetic drift. Genetic drift has no effect on the genetic code. It is an actor on mutations and can be the reason for which they become fixed in a population, but it does not produce mutations as the definition indicates. I think the researcher may have realized this after Destiny derives a more accurate definition (possible prior exposure?) of genetic drift from the original dialogue because he restates the definition as "If there were no reason why a trait might spread it might spread anyway due to random chance." There is still a reason, that being random chance, but this is understood. I hope you can see why I take issue with this when the accolade of a PhD is being touted as why the viewer should trust that the information and arguments presented are coming from a place of authority on the subject matter. Its the same reason why there was such an uproar about Gary Johnson's Aleppo fiasco. This is a guy who wants to be the director of foreign policy for the most powerful country on earth, and he gets tripped up on an integral piece of the United States' current foreign involvement. I don't have any suggestions. I have no way to tell if that is you in the video or not. Maybe the presenter was nervous, maybe he shines at communicating ideas on a different medium because he isn't used to presenting ideas in this format, maybe he had honest misconceptions about these ideas. Who knows? I wouldn't feel comfortable or useful giving suggestions until I could pinpoint the cause of why ideas were misconstrued in the conversation.
@sprddrss7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comments, I think I get what you're saying. First of all, by all means, please do not take what I say as gospel. That was not my intention. My hope is that introducing broad concepts such as drift and diffusion and discussing how drift might play an important role in in addition to natural selection are topics that people can become aware of and further investigate on their own. If you don't believe I was the speaker that's ok. Second, upon reflection I think I more or less agree with your first two paragraphs. I had difficulty in that part of the discussion because I think the average person has difficulty thinking in terms of frequencies. In the end my attempt at explaining things in a simple way was not terribly accurate on a scientific level. I fumbled a bit and Steven is fortunately quite bright and also gifted with words. I'll try to be more careful in the future. Cheers, and thanks again for the feedback.

@_WhiteMage5 жыл бұрын
"Normal" in the sense that it's not particularly rare, but a single deviation's difference between two normal distributions makes for a very clear and obvious difference between groups: Overlap two normal distributions, different by only _one_ standard deviation, and you get half of the higher one being higher than the top 5/6 of the lower one. To put that another way, it takes being in the _top 1/6th_ of blacks to be at least as smart as the _average_ white person.

Here why don't we have a little science class discussion for ourselves, shall we? Seeing as how climate and diet alone have distinctly evolved and shaped different races and ethnic groups, such as dark skinned Africans being better suited for hotter climates and Asians with slanted eyes to protect them from snow, do you think it not possible that climate and diet could also have possibly had an effect on intelligence, thinking patterns or brain differences between groups?

@MrRand0mGamer3 жыл бұрын
@@lastraven7205Hey would you mind using your brain real quick? I am talking about evolution and natural selection here. Absolutely diet played a large role in the increasing of human intelligence. We likely evolved the brains that we do because of our meat diet. Compared to chimpanzees whose diet mostly consists of plants and insects, human diets were more carnivorous in comparison. Brain tissue requires 20 times more energy than muscle tissue and meat is a much higher energy dense source which could support this larger brain size. Later with cooked meat we also got even more nutritional value and faster consumption time. It's also important to add that while diet may not increase your intelligence in the short term, it can definitely decrease it. What you put into your body makes a huge difference. Btw I was only asking this person as a hypothetical if just these two factors played a role because of his first reply to me. There is a lot more I could say about this, but he didn't want to play along as he didn't really care about the truth or have an inquisitive mind. Hi, I was the researcher in this discussion, and I appreciate your criticism. My purpose in this discussion was to give greater insight into why I don't believe racism stands up from a scientific viewpoint. I feel that the specific arguments that some race-realists happen to be making today or tomorrow is a detail when racism and racially-based ideas come in many forms and are constantly evolving. I hope that discussing some of the fundamentals of population genetics will give people some broader insight into the challenges we face when discussing these issues.
@BenDover-jy1wy7 жыл бұрын
Except you know nothing about the "altrights" "racism". We don't argue that race is anything but a social construct, which is something you spent about half this interview discussing. The simply fact is that humans can be broken down into different population groups based on place of ancestral evolution, but those groups are probably too blurry to break down into definitive "races". The altrights sole argument is that evolving in vastly disparate environments for 70,000+ years would produce differences in population groups, and all evidence suggests that those differences wouldn't magically stop at the brain. And don't even come in here saying that you were just trying to give some more info on the subject, you literally stated at the beginning of the interview that the altrights racist use of the information is bothersome to you.

Because that's the explanation for why population genetics are determined by the group through which the genes spread (aka by the location where the group lived) instead of by the environment the group lived in. Genetic drift was an "issue" for human populations, which is how you can tell if someone is from Scandinavia or Britain.

holy shit this guy talks way too much to explain simple things. He also doesn't fucking say what his subject is, "PhD in STEM field" doesn't mean much.

So basically, from a scientist's point of view, we know nothing about anything and there's an impossible number of variables effecting every aspect of life and research from 30 years ago is basically useless because well it's 2017 now... ...and we should continue to invest in academic scientific research because reasons.

This guy obviously doesn't have a quality understanding of history from what he's saying, while he does have a good basis in what he's saying at some points, the idea that race is arbitrary, and that it's some kind of social construct is massively untrue. People developed from where they were, the europeans, west africans, east africans, mongolians, slavs, britons, celts, all developed differently, even those that were similar in skin color or looks, have connotations to many physical factors, both due to upbringing from culture and selective breeding which was commonplace in history. These things do not apply much if at all in modern society, but we still have signs of the initial racial differences today. This was shown in the past with how scientists would separate races and phenotypes with differences in skull structure as a basis, while this has been muddled with racial supremacy in the years, it still can and should be used as a basis to work off of, as there is a noticeable difference in how races look and how they develop physically, due to the area that this race developed for the past 3000 years.

in the first 10 minutes he literally said that the meaning of race subjective, which you seem not to understand

Racial categorization is different from culture to culture thus it's a social construct. Ez.

Sorry, but from an historical point of view, it is you who does not have any understanding from where the concept of race comes from. First, it is very recent concept (dating back from the end of the XVIII century) and second, it was based on very loosely and weak concepts. Some arbitrary physiological differences, and some nasty generalizations about the behavior of people classified into those concepts. In a time where nobody even knew DNA and genetics was just in its infancy.
