I completed RTTS (100k non-stop) this year, 2023. This video helped me so much, like when to run, walk, what to eat. Other 2023ers, do you remember the pigs at aid stop 5. I thought I was seeing things!!!!! Kind of intereting watching the last 10k. It was dark when I did it, REALLY thick fog where you couldnt see 5ft infront of you and mud like grease. Who else remembers that???? But....the best running experience in my life. Thanks Heather and the GTN guys.

One of the best GTN videos hands down! Thank you for your honesty and in showing the range of emotions you go through on a race. I think it's nice for us beginners to see that we're not alone on this rollercoaster, and this is perfectly normal, when running (although, I felt like this on a half marathon, not an ultramarathon!). My first Marathon, I was 26, (by the time I've done 25k in a good time) went so bad, I was ready, but I've made a mistake, looking for company, I've thought I've lost him in the confusion and I was behind him, and picked up the pace. By the 15 k on a turning I've seen he was 100 behind me and not ahead, so I've waited and went together. By 21 km I've hit a first wall too soon, I couldn't keep 4 min 10s/km to beat the 3hours, and fall to the 4'40''s by the 30 k I was already in the 5' and the 35k on the 5'40'' not stopping but catching a guy who stops and runs every 100 m. I couldn't believe I was capable of making the last k under 4:30''. When I finished, I've almost couldn't walk to the car that was almost 500 m from me. I've should give up from the race after the half marathon, I've damaged my knee with the strain of running so slow in the tarmac, and spend almost one year with a knee injury. My second experience was some years later on a beach marathon of 43 k, I've trained a lot on beach, on the dry sand. We went to the place of the start of the race do a 3 hour training race, that went fine (but to close to race 2 weeks before). The first 25 went well but I've felt the first wall, and stopped for a while we went to the water to height of the knees, put the shoes on and start running again, on 28 k I've taken off my shoes, by the 35 km hit a second wall, and stopped and eaten some dry fruits bar, laid down for 2 minutes and went to the end for 5h and 19''. In the next year I've didn't train enough for long running, but I've trained my feet to running shoeless. I've started the first 2 h hours just walking and eating and drinking, when the beach became easier (I've learned that running in the soft sand I was doing 13' per km and spending my energy) I've started running close to the water and picked up a good pace, only felt some kind of a wall on the last 3 k, I've did in 6h 20'' but was ok compared to the year before, and the beach was more sandy. A few years later I've started also riding a bike, first MTB, two years later I've Bought a carbon Road Bike, and started training alone, I've started working in a zone where cycling was a tradition, but was a flat zone, and made some friends and training companions, but was harder for racing. My first ride above 80 km I've went into trouble and was no easy to make the final 20 k. A year later back on my home, I went for a 100 k solo race into a another town and back, by the 70km I've didn't had more isotonic drink and had to fill the bottles with water in a gas station. The sun was picking hotter and I was less than 6 km from home but I couldn't continue peddling, I've sited down on a bus stop for a few minutes and then gained the courage to do the last k. I've never felt the same kind of trouble, I've learned the hard way how to feed well and very early to avoid trouble. I've did a train into the mountains (we went for the Strava KOM), we were already with over 130k, and taken the boat to other side of the river and I was supposed to take the train or go home alone for more 50 k, but naah.. waiting for a train, I've hit the road and made it ok with a total of 183k. I've gained confidence to go back to running long distance again. I've used the bike to adapt the body to long training without the stress on my knees.
