The 700R4 can be a nice transmission. Keep the TV cable tight. The early ones weren't great. They were still being used in the mid 2000's just electronic shift. If you put upgraded parts in them and planetary gears from the 4L65E they can handle some power. The transmission shop I worked at when I was young, we would put them in alot of "street/strip" cars. One that stuck out the most was a 442 Cutlass with a carbed 455 running 11s. The syclone has one.

Put a big block in it.. you won’t regret it! You guys will be tickled to bits with the torque she would be putting down. Look for an old square body dually with a bigblock for a donor or an old camper that has one. Slap some good heads and a good cam in it..

U can put the 305 heads on a 350 it will bump the compression up to like 9 to 1 also most parts are interchangeable on older Chevy small blocks if it is a 350 u can buy a stroked crank cheap and make it a 383 which loves the revs which u need for franks heavey foot also motor size should b in the vin

Everything bolt on is the same between a 305 and 350. The heads on a 305 have a smaller combustion chamber. If that's the stock motor from that truck then it's an 87. That the only year a square body 1/2 ton pickup got a TBI motor. 86 and older are carbureted and perimeter bolt valve covers. Those are center bolt.

the 700r4's are a decent transmission once you throw a few upgrades on it.. if you install a corvette servo and pump kit which can be got round $350 from different speed shops like jegs and summit and throw on a 2200-2500rpm stahl converter so still streetable or get cra cra with then like a 3k rpm stahl but I'd keep the 700r4 save you money plus with the corvette stuff installed it'll suprise you how much u can control the shift points plus with that overdrive it'll make cruzin it on faster roads way more enjoyable cuz engine won't be wrapped out at 3k rpm at 65-70 mph

@mikemccabe7124 it's pretty much the same as a 4L60E only controlled through a TV cable and not solenoids. Good unit with minor upgrades. And 4 speeds vs 3 in a THM 350.

It wasn't until 85 or 86 that they put TBI in the pickups and all of the parts from the first generation heads and intakes can be swapped with a little modification to the center two intake bolts ion the exhaust cross over runner on the intake

you need to put a full manual 4l80 its the same as a t400 but with 4 gears ( by going full manual you wont need a computer to run the trans it will take a beating

The numbers are on the back driver side of the block it will tell you whether it's a 5.7 or 5.0 I'm guessing it's a 305 I've changed out quite a few of them. Build a 406 with nitrous Or a couple of turbos

You guys don’t know much about transmissions apparently. The 700R4 is an awesome transmission. We have them in all of our high 9 second cars and but them for under $1000 in parts. Plus with the overdrive it keeps our RPM down for highway cruising below 2500 with 4:11 gears. They can be awesome when built correctly. You’re probably thinking of the 200R4 that came behind the V6 or the 307 in the Olds Cutlass, Buick Regal (even the T-Type and GN). Those were garbage. The 700 is a good transmission. Hard parts are exactly the same as 4L60/4L60E.
