While my Demon 170 was having a new engine installed, I had the opportunity to drive the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer featuring the Hurricane Twin Turbo Inline 6-cylinder engine. I give you my driving impressions after driving it for a full month. Is this engine overhyped or something to get excited about?

Apparently it runs like it’s already being stressed so I can’t imagine with boost or tuning without toughening up some of the internals a lil bit

@@hughitt6107inline 6’s are naturally better balanced than V8’s; turbos are much more efficient than supercharging; they come stock with forged internals… definitely a losing combination 🥴

Problem is BMW has mastered the I6TT. These will have to be extremely tunable, reliable, and cheaper to compete. I’d have a tough time taking this over an M340. That’s apples to apples. Once you lose the V8, you start cross shopping with every other German brand. I got my challenger for the 6.4. The sound, the NA, all of it

BMW 6tt is a great engine however it's cost to maintain is outside reasonable by a Texas mile. That's why BMW values tank horribly when the warranty expires.

100% Agree! Right on point with BMW, also the rest of the European market. Which makes me wonder if that's why they went the Hurricane direction, is Shitlantis using the American market to production test an I6 TT engine for their European brands? Much cheaper to do it here than Europe, given the stricter emission standards, fuel standards, etc... over there.

Inline 6 engines can be super reliable, Chevy 4200 is a really good inline… 2jz, S54…. I wouldn’t say never but I expect the very least from Dodge 😂

Inline 6's are a very good platform. "High Strung" and over stressed Turbo or Super Charged versions are NOT long term Reliable. If ....ANY.... of these Engines make it past Warranty, I'll be totally shocked.

Those badges being on cars will be around longer than the dealers, but at some point probably will just be a badge and that's pretty much the point we're at. Now that the 90s designed hemi is gone!! That was the last thing Chrysler they had left. I guess if you want to argue the shape of the Wrangler but even that it's completely changed

Man being a youtuber has its perks. My redeye was in the shop for almost 4 months and they didnt have a loaner car for me. I had to buy a cheap beater car or get reimbursed for a rental which i would have paid thousands of my own money after like a month of waiting.

Look. Here is the reality. The I6 is a 6. Nothing will ever change that. No one that loves the roar of a V8 will ever get the same joy from an 6 cylinder. Just the reality. The V6 eco boost is a solid motor for ford. Been proven even racing. Makes great power, super tunable. But it is not a predator. The hurricane, on paper is solid. Just isn't an emotional power plant.

False, I was with chevy from 2010 to 2021 with 2 vettes and zl1, now I'm team bmw and hopefully I'll be team porsche in another 10yrs, I like variety staying with the same platform is boring, a real car enthusiasts likes a variety of cars, life is too short driving the samething your entire life.

@@hpickettz34 lol. Sorry to offend your "real enthusiast" sensibilities. But this video was not about BMW or Porsche. Porsche has a fantastic flat 6. BMW a great I6. Lotus even made a very fun little 4 banger. Forgive me for not being overly enamored with a V6 Camero, or a 4 banger Mustang, or in this case, the actual topic of this video, an I6 in the upcoming 2025 Charger. And, I did say that the EcoBoost and the Hurricane are both solid motors. I don't imagine you would have jumped all over a 450hp TT I4 in your Chevy days. Not saying there aren't good or even great motors out there that are not a v8. An Italian v12 makes music with its high end revs. Ferrari has a v6 in the 296 that sounds pretty good and the car is a monster. And Steve Saleen has a wonderful 4 banger in the new (if it ever actually happens) Saleen 1 My point is in the MOPAR world Dodge is not making a GT3rs. They are making an American muscle car. And nothing says American Muscle in the MOPAR world like a V8. I agree with you that there are wonderful enthusiast cars in the world. The Germans produce wonderful vehicles. But this video was about Dodge and not BMW or Porsche. Just sayin'.

I think people forget what a truck is for, work. When the turbo spool up for heavy loads or towing,mileage drops like a stone( friends with ecoboost confirm). My experience with my 87 GN is that as well...cruising 25mpg,playing 12-14mpg. I don't give a crap about the latest gizmo, give me a natural v8 that will last and can be worked on. You can put 10 lbs of crap in a 5 lb bag but the seams are gonna give

@@hpickettz34 Semi engines are also 12.7 to 18 liters, diesel and put out around the same HP as this 3.0 liter gas engine. Which one is stressed more? I've been around diesel engines for over 40 years,both trucks and marine, you cannot compare big slow turning diesels to the 3.0. Not saying it won't be a decent little engine, just not a 3406 Cat.

Getting excited over a Stellantis product, when they have a reputation of making junk, is jumping the gun to say the very least. If you want to go fast with a modern inline-6 get a BMW with a B58 engine. They have a proven track record of being bulletproof built on a legacy of bulletproof I6s. They also sound good. Stellantis isn't Dodge. They are a dopey European EV maker wearing a Dodge skin suit.

My friend is a general manager of a CDJR dealer he has three hurricanes waiting for motors that have blown. Good luck putting 700 horsepower in these things. You all will be footing the bill for a new 15,000 motor. Pass

Wow, I didn't think there were even very many of them on the road yet. I was intrigued by these but they burned me with the 3.0 Ecodiesel in 2014 so I knew better than to trust them with another new release.

@@FaithfulServant316 Apparently they didn't learn their lesson with the Ecodiesel. The I6 is basically the I4 from Jeep and Alfa with 2 more cylinders. Using an engine meant for a crossover or smaller sedan to put out huge torque is one of the main reasons why so many of those diesel engines would blow out the bottom ends in the 1500.

They have a thousand times more tech than a modern Wagoneer, yet they rarely fall out of the sky. Technology, if built correctly and with quality is extremely reliable. The Gen 4 Viper had probably the most advanced PCM ever designed in the early 2000's...in fact, nobody has been able to crack the code so it can be modified (bummer). As hard as it is to believe, my 2009 Viper is classified as a low emissions vehicle according to the government mandated EPA emissions sticker.....600 naturally aspirated horsepower and low emissions....Yeah, that was real simple to do. Lets face it, Stellantis is crapping the bed in many ways. Another 18 months of this and they'll be sold again. Hopefully the new regime will pick a name that doesn't sound like an erectile dysfunction drug.

Dodge doesn't even have the support that dealers need to fix ppls cars with the 2015 design. And they under pay their mechanics which leaves the customer with sub par work being done

I do not what Chrysler Dealership you take Chrysler Jeep Dodge or Ram. The Dealership I go to has EXCELLENT SERVICE DEPARTMENT FIXED RIGHT FIRST TIME. Been going there for decades for service. I take my chrysler vehicles there for Oil changes.

I'm a first time viewer of Racer X. Him worshipping Stellantis- ESPECIALLY with Stellantis screwing customers tells me he's too emotionally and probably financially invested in Stellantis to be objectionable.The Car Care Nut had a pre production 6 cyl Tundra months ago and was praising it with the tenacity of a cult member. The Toyota engine like the Stellantis engine is a giant Turd.

Lord forbid I do something other than bash Dodge .. Thats what so many of these guys are doing.. they are so close minded! It just gets old! I encourage you to simply try something new! You might actually like it! Just about every drag racer or performance enthusiast that has actually driven then this thing says its amazing. Some people change is scary and they just cant bring themselves to do it. Dodge doesn't pay me a dime. But I respect all engines because I know what they are capable of.

I love straight 6 engines. They are very smooth and the torque was right in the sweet spot. I've had 2 BMWs, one with the 3.3 and one with the 2.5 liter naturally aspirated inline six and they had plenty of power for those cars and they were great highway cruisers. I was getting 26 MPG at 75-80 MPH on trips. They don't sound as good as a V-8, but they have a nice PURR to them.

I agree, bmw m20, m54, s54, n52 all sound amazing to me. i love i6 engine sounds. i4s and v6s are too raspy, i5s and v10s are too high pitched. inline six and v8 and v12 are perfect.

I'm from Australia and the top engine swap here that isn't a V8 is Ford's BARRA turbo 4.0 inline 6 cylinder making as much as over 1200-wheel HP. They're cheaper than a 2JZ build over here.

1200whp isn’t muscle if it’s not a straight piped 400whp v8 - so muscle = a slow car that can’t corner and looks bulky and cheap and sounds louder than an explosion is the only way to live according to some of these dodge boys and girls. 🤦

@@XboxAlive Yes but you have to admit 1200 hp from a 4 cylinder is pretty impressive. It may not be a muscle car, but it'd be fun to toss one into a sedan and go have some fun. I love my V8s too but I need toys for all of my multiple personalities!

The bigger better brother of the ford barra is the 1FZ-FE and TB48 engines they are huge inline six 4.5-4.8 displacement and absolutely indestructible these 2 engines are capable with a turbo of 1500-2000 horse power on stock crank and block they destroy any V8 in a race or off road

I will keep my 2019 Dodge Charger R/T as long as possible. I smile every time I start it up. I am a car nut and take very good care of my vehicles. I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE that I bought new off the showroom floor in late 2001. It only has 55,000 miles. The only non wear and tear item I had to have repaired was the 6 CD Changer which I had a new changer put in it with a local old timer like me, I'm 72. He had it out of the dash in less than 5 minutes and back in the car in 5 days. The Charger has 33,500 miles on the 5.7L V8 and the only thing I have added to it is a OIL CATCH CAN. I put a new set of tires on it at 33,000 because I have too much fun laying down some rubber. With the new set of tires I have learned a good lesson and only did one burn out since they were new. I am only putting between 3500 and 5000 miles a year on it. One oil change a year with Mobile 1 or Pennzoil Full Synthetic for both cars. My wife drives the Altima and the HEMI is mine,LOL.

The hurricane is the least satisfying engine to drive in the full size truck segment because it’s a V6 and TFL trucks proved the hurricane is the worst engine in full sized trucks when it comes to MPGs. That’s why people aren’t crazy about the hurricane.

I've been a lifelong Mopar Fan....I have driven Mopar Powered vehicles for 38 years so It doesn't matter to me what was under the hood whether it was the Early Gen 1/2 Hemis,Big Block or Small Block LA, 2.2l Turbo II engines, Magnum Series engines, or the beloved Gen 3 Hemis, PowerTech 4.7, Slant 6 or even the venerable 4.0l Inline 6. I am about the heritage of Mopar not just the Hemi persay. I will continue to support the company no matter who owns them... Plus I am getting older and I cannot stand vehicles with loud obnoxious exhausts systems. Amazing how times have changed and when the new Ram Truck debuted in 1993 and boy did people throw a hissy fit, Along comes the Charger in 4 door boy did people throw a temper tantrum, now here comes a new inline 6 turbo and people are once again throwing a fit. Times might be changing either you get on board or go elsewhere don't throw a tantrum, just move on enjoy your life.

Sounds like you had alot of great miles in those Mopars. To be honest, I miss my magnum 360 pickup truck...wish it hadn't got stolen and ruined. My replacement was a rusty 8100 Avalanche. I'd say it is similar to the wonderful V10 Dodge had.

This is the same situation with the ford 3.5 ecoboost years ago. Everything on paper was better than the v8, but it sounded terrible and wasn’t reliable, so nobody cared for it. However I6 sounds better than a v6, we’ll have to see on reliability. I do remember driving a Taurus sho once with with the 3.5 ecoboost and it was a lot of fun; I always thought it would he cool to put it in a mustang, so I am excited to see the hurricane in the charger/challenger. Btw I drove a wagoneer with the I6 and it does have kick ass performance.

It's had some major issues from what I've found. I feel like it's a mix of the N54/ecoboost. Good engine, but what's around it will kill it cause it's faulty and hasn't been revised yet but will prob be fixed/updated in future models.

The 3.5 ecoboost is a great engine. I have it in a 3/4 ton cargo van and I love it. Hasn't given me any problems in the past 8 years

An amazing engine. Per some Dodge/Ram mechanics, many repairs, specifically to anything mounted to the rear of the engine, require body off to repair. There is simply no room to reach between the firewall and the engine to work on anything. This adds thousands in labor costs to what should be an easy repair.

I saw that vid on KZbin where the entire body was off the chassis just to get access to some fasteners on the rear of the engine. As an old working auto tech, this was mortifying regarding my attitude toward Stellantis and their movement to get rid of Dodge, Chrysler and maybe Jeep and Ram. Also, what happens if a person purchases a new Dodge and they unfortunately go out of business? I've been driving Dodge's of all forms, new, rusted out, powerful and powerless since the mid 70s. Sure I've owned lots of other stuff too, GM, Ford, Honda, and even a couple Saabs! But between working on late model cars and seeing what's coming in the horizon....it's scary. Your average key board warrior doesn't really know what it's like working on this stuff day by day. And less people now want to get into the auto repair trade than even 10 years ago. I agree with @zilsmooth @Springfield2016 comments should be up on top to let anyone who's considering purchasing the latest cars to think very carefully and do their due diligence WITH real auto techs....NOT keyboard mechanic wanna be fakes. @RacerX9 please read this.

My problem with the hurricane is that the tuning market will rule it out. If I want to build a straight 6 and boost it. I can boost a gm 4200. For cheap, and build huge power with just an ls derived head. The problem is, we can build better sixes that are proven in the field and on the track, for a fraction of the cost. I just don't see this motor being worth it to real motorheads.

Here my problem with this engine. It doesn’t scream durability it says performance. The aluminum block. The sprayed in cylinder liner twin turbos. I sure it’s a great preformance engine but is it a pickup engine. Ford has had problems with the eco boost in a truck and Toyota is having problems with there turbo engine in there trucks. My concern is they are a through away engine. There going to be expensive to replace and likely impossible to repair and in a truck that should be used for work those are major problems

The hurricane engine will wear out 3-4 times faster than a naturally aspirated V8 Hemi and if it gets to 100,000 miles without issues, and that’s a big IF, even with forged internals …. you’re going to have loads of issues. Let’s talk when a good portion of hurricane engines hit 100k+ miles.

You'd rather have a v6 or v8? Inline 6 engines (like the Cummins) are over square, so they make way more torque down low. Even though the powerstroke(v8) makes way more hp and torque, the Cummins is superior for towing

Just as a service to others here, can you tell us what's the worst quality issue with any Chrysler or Dodge? I'm serious, not poking any fun at you....I'd like to avoid some of the products they've sold that you feel are the worst quality wise. TY for answering if you do. Oh, and an FYI, I personally don't like those roller lifters that lose the needle bearings in them and wipe out the cam. But then again, I hate Tritons also, which are Ford as you probably know. And that reminds how many Ecoboost's have giving up the ghost as well as every damn GM LS 5.3 that has engine issues that I've worked on.

FrankieD SRT in Germany 🇩🇪. We all have to grow up sometimes. Nature of the beast. I’m all about power too. The 6 cylinder engine is a torque beast because of it’s inline profile. More direct and deliverable power. I owned a 1989 Ford F150 Short bed that was a torque monster. Not fast, but powerful as hell! I’m a MOPAR guy though. It’s not Horsepower, it’s Torque. A lot of people don’t really get that. If you’ve got a power train with a higher Torque output, you’ve got the Beans. Make sense? Love you brother!!!❤️

I look at it like this. Change is very hard to accept. I get that everybody has had a moment like that. I won’t completely trash the inline 6 but from some of the things I’ve seen does raise eyebrows. Like the recent events with Demon 170 engine failing. Talking about electrical issues with the new hurricane engines, some concerns about the engine not having an oil dipstick, and then also as you mentioned the issues of a first year engine. It is enough to raise an eyebrow but I always like to wait to see what quirks are worked out and if any potential issues are worked out before giving my complete thoughts.

I have a '65 F350 with the same engine. The Ford 300 six is one of the best engines ever built. The Australians kept updating it and eventually gave us the Barra. .... The Hurricane is no Barra.

I drove ford Broncos and F-150s with both 302 V8s and 300 I6s. The 302 had a little more power, but the 300 was just as good. IMO, the debate isn't 8 vs. 6 cylinders; it is about size (displacement) period. Little engines start hitting a wall around 100,000 miles when you work them.

That Ancel battery tester is pretty cool. I'm going to have to look at getting one of those. Since my car is a push to start, it will either crank or it will not.. so I can't gauge on starter behavior to know if my battery is weak! A tester like that would be perfect to avoid the dreaded, no start scenario! As for the Hurricane I6, I'm not quite sure yet... I guess we'll have to see it installed in a performance car, see how it performs and holds up, and let time speak for it's reputation.

Well Nissan is dropping the GT-R because they know the Charger 6 Pack is gonna be likely on par with the GT-R bit cheaper. Honestly the biggest mistake Stallantis is making is they're putting it in a Jeeps first because Jeeps are known for being buggy.

They honestly tossed them in the jeeps well before they announced it in the chargers. Plus, it'll be war between the 6 pack awd chargers and the G80 bmws because they're so close in performance and possibly weight that it'd be a battle if dodge fixes the 6 packs issues asap to make it competitive.

Time will tell the hurricanes reliability. The 5.7 hemi has always been a pretty good engine. The 5.7 hemi has had lifter problems at high miles but other than that they are pretty solid engines. Just change the oil every 5,000 miles and don’t let it idle all the time and a 5.7 hemi will run 220,000 miles all day long.

I am. Completely happy with my ecodiesel Gen 3 on my gladiator. Mpg is almost 30 on highway with 34inch tires... Mud terrains also... Like 70lbs per tire... I tow a 5500+lbs boat still get over 15mpg at 60... I don't know what can be better.. Just hope it is reliable over the yrs and might make it more loose from Restrictions over time.

I worked at a dodge dealership and I was very disappointed with the quality of the vehicles coming from the manufacturer. So many electrical issues blemishes in the paint, bad batteries and more recalls than I can count. I eventually had to quit because I could not promote such a bad product.

I am exited and surprised to see the return of the straight 6 in RAM vehicles. Like probably many Australians I have fond memories of the Holden XU1, 6 Pak Charger, Valiant Slant 6, and the famous Falcon Barra, not to mention those old Q Dodge side valve motors that finished up in ski boats. I've heard they've been having alot of problems with them but it is a new engine so there's that. These issues are making it unreliable and techs don't want to work on it the whole body has to come off for any kind of drivetrain work.

My vehicle now has a Hemi. I've driven the new Hurricane. The Hemi is only better for the sound. Hemi's are not a panacea of reliability either. That I6 is so smooth, and has such excellent power. You will miss the sound, but RAM's were the quiet Hemi's from the factory anyway. The factor exhaust on everything else with a Hemi sounded better. And you will love the pull of that I6. Torque.

People with reservations about the 6 cylinder with twin turbos versus the V8, just research the 1987 Grand National GNX, V6 single Garrett turbo, fastest production car in 87, the numbers were reduced for insurance and tree hugger purposes, just imagine what the technology is today!!

Agreed on the GN. Wonder how fast it would be with a twin turbo v-8? , I owned and loved the Grand National, but this Dodge 6 cyl will likely have higher maintenence with Turbos than a regular Dodge v8. I would buy another RWD Grand National in a second.

The issue is just it’s a v6 not that it’s not fast or anything it’s just not a true muscle car. I have a hellcat and a stinger the stinger gets up and goes with some upgrades could smoke the hellcat all day. But I just don’t like the way v6s drive which is a lot of people’s issues I think is they just don’t want a v6 they’d rather drive a v8 even if it’s slower then a tt 6 cylinder

@@bobbybraddock7530 I’ll agree to a certain extent. They lifted the whole mandatory ev thing they’re trying to make cars and light trucks average 50mpg by 2031. Point being the way it’s going it won’t matter if you like a v6 or not we all are gonna be driving 4 bangers with 150hp soon if we keep letting them get their way.

Just buy a BMW why spend that much money on a unproven inline 6 from a company that has sabotaged every American brand. When around the same price range you can get a BMW with the same engine and is actually a luxury brand not a brand forced into a luxury brand it just makes no sense.

The more cylinders the sweeter the sound, my S.R.T.10 dodge truck is music, but the best engine sounds I've heard was the v-12 jaguar I tested in 1975.

i dont like v10s and I5s. too high pitched IMO. inline 6 and v8 and v12 are great. BMW S54 in the E46 M3 , and the lamborghini murciealgo v12 is probably my all time favorites.

I traded my hemi wagoneer for the hurricane and I love it. It’s a fantastic motor. TONS of power and super great power band

Yea True tech will improve but for me old school V-8 sound and for the love of it my 2016 Challenger SRT will forever be in my garage!!!

I wouldn’t call dodge a ‘dead brand’ frankly EVERY automotive company is going to be swapping to EV’s , they’re just taking the initiative to swap to it sooner rather than later. Still amazing cars.

I own an BMW M4 Comp that comes with the S58 inline 6 twin turbo. Has crazy power and with a few mods and a tune people are seeing 700 WHP out of the platform that can be daily driven. Sounds like garbage, I will admit, the way the turbos are arranged and the exhaust is setup but love it.

Racer X. Sh*t! I love love love my Hellcat. I kno you sure liked Xcessive... Personally I don't care about the new I6. They are a common power plant. I bought a 2023 Hellcat. If I'm too slow? Oh well. If I'm a dinosaur? Oh well. I'll take my swagger over the new engine advances. This is my second Hellcat, I've owned two 392s, and I have even had an R/T. All Challengers. I love the old school styling and the V8 power. What you speak of may be the future but it's not my future. I'll sit on my 2023 for as long as I can. I'll watch the world go by from one fad to another while I enjoy my impractical outrageous 717hp coupe that's good for nothing but wasting tires and gas. Smiles for the miles! Thanx X! Keep up the good work.

I have had the 2025 ram 1500 limited with the 3.0ttHO engine in it for about a month. Great engine, smooth power delivery, cant feel the transmission shift, and when you stand on it.....wow, its a rocket ship. Only complaint I have is the engine is jumpy from idle speed to about 1100 rpm. something is wrong with its throttle response at very low rpm.

I drove an enterprise rental wagoneer with the hurricane but the check engine light was on. I was also very surprised at the power delivery but I’m not crazy about all these electrical issues Jeep seems to have.

Going back 40 to 50 years, Chrysler (and I mean CJDR) have always had electrical issues with modules and wiring. However, their alternators, starters and batteries are generally speaking, reasonably durable. This is from a Mopar fan boy! As far as this inline 6 is concerned, according to engine engineers, they knew they were going to incorporate the turbos on these vehicles from scratch so as such, they designed the engine with that in mind. However many turbos out there are designed as an afterthought on an ICE and that is really where many turbo engines fail because they were not originally designed for it. As such, many internal and external components of the engine, such as the pistons or cooling system, cannot handle the extra boost.

My mother in law just bought one constant electric issues with the infotainment and the ac system sucks in it . Glad I bought the wife a Yukon at4 with the 6.2 zero issues and better fuel economy so far .

Those were the same issues I had with the Wagoneers that I drove. The engine felt great but so many issues with the car itself unfortunately

I owned a wagoneer with the hurricane in it. The engine does not have a dipstick to check the oil. My wagoneer had with the hurricane had many issues, including with the engine. I would not recommend anyone buy anything with a hurricane in it. Sorry X, your video sounds more like a chrysler commercial, rather than an honest opinion of what the reality of the engine is. My hurricane had many, many engine issues to the point that I was bought out of it.

It's the Dodge "Barra"! The Mopar "Atlas"! Inline 6's have a legacy of strong performance with basic mods. But in the era of transverse mounted engines, that didn't fly so well.

As a 31 year Chrysler tech i would say the 3.0 tt has plenty of power, but the lag when stomping the pedal is kind of annoying and lets see how it holds up after 100k. Right now im doing a lot of t stats and fuel pumps on them. I had a couple of engines that were blown up early but they are starting to thin out.

I have not driven one.. but I am excited for them. I drive Mercedes for work.. and the inline 6 turbo is nice.. I can imagine the Twin Turbo..

I've been a Mopar fan for over 50 years. But I will never buy a twin turbo vehicle. It will cost the crap out of you to maintain and repair. I'm not a fan of extended warranties, but you better get one for this engine.

The engine stats are BS, it’s fake power. Let’s see how these engines handle 75k miles of moving 7,000lbs around. If I have learned anything from watching these auto manufactures it’s they aren’t building them to last. Plus the sound sux.

Their problem is that they should have showcased that engine in something that'll take advantage of its performance. Throw it in something mustang sized, or bring back a single cab Ram RT.
