Anyone who lives in Houston knows it's friggin' hot and stuff like this is probably going to happen even to exceptional athletes in good health. At 6pm, the temp reads 100 degrees in the shade in summer time, so after like 9am, there is no cool time of the day.
@Banyo__7 жыл бұрын
Athletes around the world, no matter the sport, male or female, can and have collapsed due to heat related illness. The sun is an equal opportunity offender. If you were already sick, you aren't drinking enough water, you overheat--it can happen to anyone.

Are you asking because when I say no, you're going to say well OMG it's so hot there and no one ever passes out no matter what or it's hotter than Houston for sure so this video makes no sense. Like I said, the heat is an equal opportunity offender. Your own personal body reacts to it differently. It's why people from the South going to the colder North sometimes find it really intense, whereas someone who has lived in the North their whole lives can go down the block in shorts in the cold if they wanted to.

Water breaks 1 minute every half and you can avoid things like this much better! Not 100%, but much better! Top leagues in europe uses it in very high heats(but the temperature are usually not that hot)...or reschedule and play later!
@LindseyLF19907 жыл бұрын
The NWSL implemented hydration breaks a few years ago after a FC Kansas City player was hospitalized with dehydration. They have them around the middle of every half for three minutes and did so during each half of this game. Lifetime (the channel that broadcast this game) didn't want the weekly Saturday games to interfere with their higher rating programming that starts at 6:00 PM Eastern so they worked with the league to schedule the games at 4:00 PM Eastern. Since this incident Lifetime and the NWSL shuffled the start time of some of the games around, lowered the temperature threshold of when they would have hydration breaks, and implemented a system of if and when they would delay games due to dangerous temperatures. When the schedule was released some of the media in Orlando and Houston voiced their concerns that the games being broadcast on Lifetime were scheduled too early in the summer. When this happened it was like an unfortunate "I told you so" moment.
@kekort26 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of you are young people, so you need to know that what happened was a player falling victim to heat illness. It's not because she's faking it, or out of shape, or because she's a woman. Korey Stringer of the NFL died from heat stroke in 2001. Educate yourselves about it or you could easily be a victim as well.

I was born and raised in Houston, and that damn heat is truly deadly. I spent a few summers working for my dad in construction in Houston in the 80's and it sucked ass. I live in Dallas now and it's not quite as bad. The humidity here is dryer and more tolerable.

Not sure if the rules for NWSL is the same as most professional leagues, but I've always wanted to change the subbing rules for incidents like this. What is the precedent for the 3 sub a game rule? Was the game played in quarters/water breaks? Every other major sport to my knowledge allows all the subs you want. You got 19-25ish players on a squad - why not more than 3?

My understanding is that the men stopped playing daytime games in Houston, if that's still correct..? Funny that the women had to play during the heat. I lived in Houston for 2 years and saw Houston Dynamo vs LA Galaxy when Beckham was there. It was played at lunchtime and the heat was unbearable. There was about 12 in our gang and most left after a few minutes coz they were burning up. Me and 1 colleague were brave and lasted to halftime before exiting to the nearest bar to cool down. I don't know how the players survived... Ps just realised the vid is from 2017. I watched the dynamo game in 2012.
