I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Evelyn Infurna. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, I was able to scale this quickly to $150,000. If I can do this in a year, anyone can.

I think it is unrealistic to take someone who is wise, frugal, etc and call them upper class because they have the benefit of their frugality. Because their frugality shows up in their lifestyle that is diminished from the true upper class. But I argue this. Someone living a upper middle class who is content has a better life than an upper class person who is not content. There is a lot of stuff that rich people spend money on that don't make you happy, secure, or otherwise enhance you life.

My wife and I make combined $280K in NYC suburb... by definition, I'm def upper class but I dont feel it... Our taxes are like 80K... so out of the 200K, we spend another 50K on housing and 20K on childcare... with 130K left, we spend 60K ish and save 70K ish... so I'm saving good amount but just live plain middle class lifestyle
@eile4219Күн бұрын
that's why national average or median income is pointless. Too many poor people in other places to bring the average and median down. Always good to just compare to your own area. $280K for a couple in NYC is just not enough to have a quality middle Middle Class life when your rent can be 3k or 4k a month, paid more taxes than national average.

I don't remember my salary doubling in a few years but if you've got a good paying job, are living below your means, and investing you're on the path to building wealth. By the definition of middle class used in this video we haven't been middle class for a fair number of years. That doesn't mean a wild lifestyle though. We live modestly and drive nothing special ten year old cars. But that gives us the freedom to spend a little extra on the things that are important to us and not worry about paying for the little emergencies in life, like the furnace going out (which it just did).
@leahwolber7082Күн бұрын
It really depends where you live too and if you have state taxes. My husband and I each gross over 100k, but feel and behave middle class. We budget, careful with spending, invest 15% and still have debt. We’re ok with the debt we have at this point (student loans and mortgage) and are working to pay it off but not aggressively. Here’s what makes a big difference- when you bought your house (2019), do you have childcare costs (no, all my kids are in school), how many investing years do you have left- those are important.
@dkstudioartКүн бұрын
The only sign that I'm not middle class is the fact that I was able to retire early, however I live modestly, like I'm lower middle class because most of my income is IRA distributions and I want to make sure my IRA lasts the rest of my life no matter what happens with the stock market.

You can get scholarships when you are middle class. It’s harder to get grants and work study. I went to college with kids who had partial and full academic scholarships and now I have friends whose kids have them because their standardized test scores and grades were exceptional. Also many scholarships are not administered through schools and don’t ask about family income. Also if your parents are divorced, you don’t have to put down a non-custodial parent’s income but some people don’t know this.

Meh, all the nation average income 59k? proves is that there are way more poor people then rich dragging down that average. 59k is not middle class. In fact, I would argue that anyone under 150k a year isn't middle class, and there's a lot of places where 300k isn't middle class. Americans don't like to think of themselves as poor, so they inflate their status. You can not be middle class without having a stable decent income, savings, a home, reliable transportation, healthcare, investments/401k, and a 529 if you have kids. Those are the basics of middle class and you are not achieving that on 59k. Anywhere. Now go make (a lot) more money.
