Signs You Are Now Above Middle Class 1. Your income has doubled in the last few years. 2. Your only debt is your mortgage. 3. You are able to save for retirement. 4. You have passive income. 5. You are actively taking steps to reduce your tax burden.

@droptozro2 ай бұрын
Well, 1) sort of---but inflation makes it feel like not much has changed. 2) No mortgage--paid off our starter 2 bedroom home earlier in 2024, but still can't tell now with inflation. 3) Still saving for retirement, but health bills have made it difficult this last year to add beyond the basic 15% 4) Nope 5) Probably need to work more on this. I listened to a lot of stuff on it years ago but need to put it in place more with investments. I'm mainly investing in Roth 401ks and Roth IRAs. Still feel middle class and on the low end of it.
@kayb52 ай бұрын
@@droptozro At this point it seems people think that if you're not adding debt to your net worth every month you're upper class. You seem pretty solid if your house is paid off and you're able to save 15% for retirement. We're only at 6% (3% if you exclude company match) and we had to move to a different state which almost doubled our mortgage. We have 5 young kids and only one income, but we're not adding consumer debt into our lives and we're building our savings, so I feel pretty run of the mill middle class.
@droptozro2 ай бұрын
@@kayb5 That's great that you're getting a handle on it and not adding to your debt. I know exactly how you feel on one income--my wife stays at home and homeschools our kids. It seems solid from the outside, but it's not because our 2 kids both have chronic health issues now that we're trying to head off. After spending probably $10k this year on mainstream doctoral methods even though our deductible was low... we've had to recognize we're essentially on our own--most doctors said we were just going to have to mitigate the health issues(migraines almost daily for one daughter). Without tons of other details on their health issues, the only thing we've found that helps our children(and us) is truly local organic foods from local farms we know and trust. And, that comes at a cost. We have backyard 5000 sq. ft. garden, sheep, and chickens--but it's not enough. We went from spending about $600/month on food to now planning on spending $1800 next month on food. As an example, raw A2A2 milk from a farm we trust cost $14/gallon. Raw sour cream from those same cows cost about $15 for a small tub similar to what you'd buy at a grocery store. Grass-fed grass-finished beef at 1/4 cow prices is still around $6.50/lb after butcher costs. And I feel the same pressures---we want to move to a larger farm of at least 10-15 acres so we can be more self-sustainable but prices are rising too fast around us. We may have to move states, but like you now have--I don't want a %7-8% mortgage. Paying off our house felt great for about a month, but then it's been nothing but bills and costs rising. Home/car Insurance just tried to raise prices 40%, property taxes are going up another 30% next year. I felt more solid 4-5 years ago even though I was only making about $60k for our household and had a mortgage. The health issues were a wake up call on our family.

I think it is unrealistic to take someone who is wise, frugal, etc and call them upper class because they have the benefit of their frugality. Because their frugality shows up in their lifestyle that is diminished from the true upper class. But I argue this. Someone living a upper middle class who is content has a better life than an upper class person who is not content. There is a lot of stuff that rich people spend money on that don't make you happy, secure, or otherwise enhance you life.

that's why national average or median income is pointless. Too many poor people in other places to bring the average and median down. I don't remember my salary doubling in a few years but if you've got a good paying job, are living below your means, and investing you're on the path to building wealth. By the definition of middle class used in this video we haven't been middle class for a fair number of years. That doesn't mean a wild lifestyle though. We live modestly and drive nothing special ten year old cars. But that gives us the freedom to spend a little extra on the things that are important to us and not worry about paying for the little emergencies in life, like the furnace going out (which it just did).

We budget, careful with spending, invest 15% and still have debt. We’re ok with the debt we have at this point (student loans and mortgage) and are working to pay it off but not aggressively. Here’s what makes a big difference- when you bought your house (2019), do you have childcare costs (no, all my kids are in school), how many investing years do you have left- those are important.

You can get scholarships when you are middle class. It’s harder to get grants and work study. I went to college with kids who had partial and full academic scholarships and now I have friends whose kids have them because their standardized test scores and grades were exceptional. Also many scholarships are not administered through schools and don’t ask about family income. Also if your parents are divorced, you don’t have to put down a non-custodial parent’s income but some people don’t know this.

The best way to break out above the middle class is to own a business. A lot of work is required, but usually people choose a business they’re passionate about. We’re upper class, but didn’t start there. My wife and I started as a young married couple in college- with me stressing over a $500/month rent payment. We’re now 46 and save about $500,000 a year and live on a 29 acre ranch in California. Building a business gives you the chance to do that. Almost no employees will ever be able to earn 7-figures.

I would define social-economic classes as the lifestyle that your income can mathematically afford in your local area without going into non-mortgage debt. Lower class is most basics but very little to no luxuries. Middle class is all basics with a few luxuries. Upper class is all basics with many of the finest, higher end things that money can buy.

Tennessee may offer a relaxed lifestyle. But the reality of wealth in America is being established enough that inflation took your $45k house past a $1M value. So the old standard that Meryl Lynch gave me, that the house I live in is not wealth, hold true. But the earning money while we sleep is important! Passive income is where most wealth starts. And not having all our eggs in one basket, shows wealth too! As a 7 year cancer survivor. Having comprehensive healthcare just down the street matters. I have relatives that live in lower cost areas. That they would have to go several counties over to get the same healthcare I have locally.

5 Signs You Are No Longer in the Middle Class 1. Your income has been cut in half. Your spouse lost their job & cannot find work. You’ve had to get a side gig, in addition to your full time job, just to try & stay afloat. 2. You’ve begun running up debt on credit cards in order to buy gas & groceries; just trying to stay afloat. 3. You are no longer able to save for retirement. You need every penny to try & stay afloat. 4. You have no hope of ever having passive income; you’re just trying to stay afloat. 5. Taxes, income & property, are unaffordable & will ultimately bankrupt you. But, you can’t even think about that right now, you’re just trying to stay afloat. Congrats! You are no longer in the middle class; you are now in the US poverty class. It’s an enormous & growing group of Americans who are footing the bill for the whole world, except you & your family.

IMHO: No debt except house (and that one not over-leveraged, healthy equity and OK % of after-tax income), healthy buffer savings emergency fund that is only touched for actual infrequent emergency events, saving 10-15% of your income in investments to build wealth (and letting it compound without extracting all dividends/gains) preferably maxing a employer match or Roth/IRA, and also crucially _not being daily stressed about your personal economy_. I didn't mention any income level, because frankly if your income is too low you won't be able to check those boxes, but you can achieve an above middle class life experience with the right mindset (critically planning, discipline, and living somewhat below your means) and sufficient middle / upper middle income managed well.

Is it just me or am I the only one that doesn’t feel sorry for people who feel strapped with $200,000 a year? If you still feel broke with that much money, you are living in an area that is just too expensive and could feel completely different in a lower cost area. And mind you, that might not be several states away, it just might mean that you have to get slightly out of the city. We live on $80,000 income, of course, less once taxes are taken out, but we’re OK. Maybe we don’t have the ability to go out and buy whatever we want whenever we want, but we’re also not constantly worried about money. If we had $200,000 a year I can guarantee, I wouldn’t be worried about money with the way I spend money right now.

Why does she look somewhere and not toward the camera. Odd watching the video so just end up listening until I found the summary of the 5 in the comments, read the 5 and moved on.

You are upper class if you have enough that you no longer have to work for a living. (Upper Upper class inherited their money)

Why would “the last few years” mean anything special in terms gauging class standing? Nobody cares - or should care - about velocity of wealth creation.

Didn't Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett invent the strategy of buying/investing when the market is low and also buying/investing when the market is high? As Warren Buffet said, he has seen this happen many times in his life. Not an investor. My husband and i never earned more than a middle class salary. We plan to get retired at 58 with a stock portfolio worth $4M. We have never sold so much as one share of stock...

Doubling your income depends on where you are when you are a student you might only earn small change. You often double it with your first proper job. Minimising tax is also pretty bad behaviour if you live in a society

Christian Socialism- choosing to op in- is way different then governmental socialism. Military health care is a form of socialism. No matter your rank, your family is fully covered.

Someone does know the definition of Socialism..Younger kids through out words without knowing the true meaning of the word they are using 😂

@@jabow1878 military healthcare is paid by the government so it is a socialism policy. A religious organization profiting is not socialism
