@@obcl8569 It is not really THAT impressive. In ages past Iceland had a small population, usually didn't go far above 50.000 people. I usually do not need to go more than 6 or 7 generations back to find a connection to any of my friends, for example. So when the person in question is from about a thousand years ago, I would not be surprised if more than half the nation can trace their lineage back to Egill (who we all learn about in school, so he would be a popular example).

In case anyone was wondering this song is a bastardized version of a piece of Skaldic poetry from Egil's saga. No Viking ever wanted a galley and definitely never steered a barque. Also you can't steer a ship of that time period from the prow, you steer in the stern. The whole thing is non-sensical. The original was probably changed due to the content, but it goes as follows, My mother wants a price paid To purchase my proud-oared ship; Standing high in the stern I'll scour for plunder, The stout viking-steersman Of this shining vessel: Then home to harbour After hewing down a man of two. This is a popular translation of the original, which is written in old Norse, some of it is a little incorrect. "Of this shining vessel" is actually "stýra dýrum knerrir" which roughly means he will command a fleet of a Knarrs, which are Viking trading ships, wider and heavier than a longship, better suited to open ocean voyages. Here it's too mean that he will need them to transport all the treasure he will plunder. Egil wrote this right after cutting a boy in half with an axe, he was 7 at the time, the boy was slightly older than him. This started a whole skirmish, 7 men were killed, and a longstanding feud started between the two families of the boys. Egil's mother told him he would be a strong Viking warrior and leader after what he did, saying that he was a true Viking, so he sat down and wrote this.

That is very interesting, and I'm going to enjoy delving into the history. While I definitely like to know the truth, as close as we can get at least, behind art and legends, I'd argue we are following a tradition as old as humanity itself: shifting stories into something we can appreciate and understand ourselves. This society can appreciate wanting to sail to distant shores and steer a proud galley rather better than the idea of a baby slaughtering another baby being anything to sing over. I'll forever be fascinated with how stories and song and legend are not only a product of their time but also grow or shrink with the sensibilities of the people who come after. Thank you for sharing!

Just enjoy the music maybe it's historically inaccurate but it's still a good song

I remember learning the original in school as a kid. As an Icelander, you're usually expected to kill your first foe by the age of 10 and start a full-blown family feud before turning 12.

This song gave me more sea experience than working on the water for almost 15 years....also at the start of the song I had nothing but at the end I'm holding an axe and have a helmet on with full beard WTF?!??!
