It's a deadly difficult combo for Californians, but maybe she's used to the misery of humidity in New England. 😎 Although I wouldn't even recommend pleather for our typically dry 🥵 scorching Summer or early Fall🌡heat. Triple digits are quite common in that period. 🤩 Unless we're in the midst of an extended heatwave〰️which can happen year round here too〰️her skirt could probably comfortably work from late 🍁Fall through mid-Spring💐. Our last few Springs had been mostly sunny, but fairly mild temps through June. 😫Sadly, we haven't even experienced much "June gloom" this year that keeps a cool 🌫 coastal layer over us for at least half a day. 🙏 We're hoping it's not a sign of worse weather torture😖 to come. 💚 Bridget from Cali ☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

For the leather debacle: (edit: here change "leather" for "skin" or "resource") Leather is usually a side product regardless if it's going to be used or not. The problem with the sustentability movement would fall into the meat industry, not the leather industry. A lot of leather brands (at least in my country) are family owned and have been working for years, they're mostly small businesses (compared to a corporate like Inditex that would produce PU Leather aka plastic) hence the higher price, however leather (if taken care properly) LAST FOREVER. Which is also an extra point for having pieces that are both timeless and aren't going to breakdown fast (like said PU Leather). For me, buying Brand New leather is alright, but if you are worried about the environment impact, leather fairs with local expositors and thrifting are the best options. Leather is also an incredibly versatile material, it's used for clothes, shoes, harnesses (both for people and animals), accessories, furniture, etc. And again, as long as you take proper care of it, it may outlive you which is more than we can say about a lot of clothes. Tl; dr Leather is a side product from the meat industry, it's going to be there regardless it's used or not, if it's used, it's going to be one of the steadiest and lasting materials, buying leather support local business
@obtusemushroom2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for phrasing this so well! It makes me so sad whenever people bash leather. As long as people don't feel iffy about animal products in general and can afford locally crafted leather products (specifying because cheaply produced leather comes with horrendous exploitation of workers), I would always recommend going for the real thing instead of the plastic version. Although.... A genuine leather skirt of this length doesn't sound any more comfortable than a plastic leather one....
@idraote2 жыл бұрын
One concern is usually about tanning which is not a clean process. But they are getting better at it and what you say still stands. Leather lasts, wheareas plastic lasts in the wrong way.
@changingmind32482 жыл бұрын
It might be that way where you life, but sadly it's not always true that it's a side product... Often there are different breeds for different purposes. For cows, the ones used for milk are not the same as the ones bred for their meat or for leather. Also, the byproduct in form of feathers or skin of large slaughterhouses is usually in no shape to be profitable for them - meaning it's cheaper for them to throw it away than have it cleaned of the blood and feces... Edit: it is however true, that leather has great potential to last, so thrifting is always good - otherwise I'd recommend you give vegetable leather a try! I have no personal experience with it, but I've seen the guys from NerdForge use it regularly and they seem happy with it :)
@TheEliseRodgers2 жыл бұрын
@@changingmind3248 NerdForge does have various projects using both animal and alternative leather, and can show production success with various different types and thicknesses. They often source large pieces of different leathers too, so are a decent resource it anyone is interested in seeing more about finding and using this material for various projects
@helenm10852 жыл бұрын
My partner's argument as a vegan is that if leather is a byproduct of the meat industry, then buying it subsidises the meat industry. I still bought some ugg boots though and I'm supposedly vegetarian.... I guess I just hate the idea of plastic more, and I want my shoes to last forever and ever

💖 you have the best vibe. I still have your "good enough" stored away in my head to be played like a sound effect in a radio show for when I need to cut my perfectionism short... and "let's f*ck around and see what happens" is about to make it into that sound effect collection as well.

This was GREAT! The shot of Frodo resting his head on the Goldblum picture made my heart explode. Also, maybe a petticoat or two would help make the art more visible?

The only bad thing about watching Rachel Maksy videos is the sudden brazen confidence and interest in doing a complex DIY project, knowing it will be horrible. Never fails.

I think a linen or cotton petticoat would not only help reveal the picture more but also be a great way to make a pleather skirt more viable in unpleasant weather. The natural fibers will help the air flow and wick away moisture.

The best tip i ever learned for using printer paper as a stamp is to put the yellow-ish masking tape over it to make it a little stronger before cutting out the design. Also 100/10 on the skirt ❤️

So basically the reason you can't make an environmentally friendly faux leather is down to the fact that it doesn't last and the fact that it doesnt last is down to the way it's made. Faux leather is basically flexible plastic on a fabric backing. In order to produce faux leather (yes even the self proclaimed 'fruit leather' made from plant fibers) you must add plasticizers to make it flexible. Plasticizers are notoriously unstable and tend to with dry out (I'm sure you've handled crunchy peeling pleather before) or leak out (think of that awefull sticky layer vintage toys and electronics often have). There are different "recipes" for faux leather and some is more stable then others but eventually it will suffer either reversion (getting sticky) or dry rotting (disentigration). We just do not have the tech to mimic real leather without this happening. Real leather holds up because it's an organic material. It can still be bad for the environment but it wins in the long run because it lasts so much longer than faux leather. It can be reconditioned and is pourus enough to absorb oils and regain it's flexibility. People use saddles that are over 100 years old today if they were well maintained. Even with the best of care faux leather comes off the manufacturer line with a built in expiration date. The chemicals that let it flex and bend like a real animal hide are it's destruction in the long run.

Yes exactly!! In my opinion it's better to buy real leather, sustainability wise. I know it's kind of a double-edged sword though
@MsSarahKelly2 жыл бұрын
Woah, I’m really blown away. Thank you for sharing this. I have seen what you’re describing about some of the older vintage toys having that sticky layer and other items coming apart made from pleather. Seriously. Thank you.

I once visited a leather museum near Frankfurt and saw some super promising vegan alternatives made from pineapple and even the SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) from kombucha. I also saw a bag made to look like it was made from Alexander McQueen’s skin, including hair, scars, tats and nips. Highly recommend.
@raraavis77822 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. But just a word of warning for the less experienced in all things leather: Leather can vary widely in quality. You want to look for 'full grain' leather, ideally. 'Top grain' leather is second and 'genuine leather' is quite low quality. (Just google the terms, if you want to know why). Do not buy belts or everyday life purses or such from 'genuine leather', they'll not last you much longer then the fake stuff, likely. And pay attention to details. Your nice purse won't do you much good, if the coating on the handles peels and flakes. Stuff like that. Just be super critical, as you exame potential purchases. Consider, if parts might be replaceable, if necessary. Compare stuff from reputable brands (I don't mean 'designer', but brands that specialise in leather goods) with cheap stuff, if you have the chance. Best education, you can get. Even an amateur can see and feel at least some of the differences. Large department stores are great for this. And take care of your leather. It NEEDS some tcl every now and then. Get some quality care products. They're well worth the couple bucks more, you pay for them. Don't be that person, that endlessly worries about the environmental impact of every single purchase.... just to not take care of their things afterwards.
