This video reminds me so much of my grandmother. She used to attend a new years party her friends threw every single year, and one year she bought a short flapper dress that was entirely made of a tin-foil like material. At the end of the party everyone was insanely wasted, and they needed to wrap the leftovers, so they just stripped my grandmas dress and truly used it as tin foil. She went home practically nude with only a sheer slip and a bundle of leftovers and my grandpa howling all the while. It's her favorite new years story to tell.

This is unironically actually a genius fashion moment. The dress becomes an interactive light show that takes up an entire space, kinda like a lazer show. A person can be dazzled by its effect without even looking at the dress itself. On top of that, the movement of the reflected points of light interact with each other by crossing each other and sweeping across the room in curved sporadic lines, a real disco ball could never.
@amyhannon3034 Жыл бұрын
Yes that's it! I didn't understand why the reflected lights are so dazzling as compared to a disco ball until you said that. It's because she's a disco ball that's not the shape of a sphere AND her shape changed when she wiggles around lol

Rachel, your videos give this middle aged lady a serotonin boost without fail. Thanks for all you do.
@AlexaFaie Жыл бұрын
I think the reason she thought it was unflattering was how it followed her tummy a bit. Which is how this style would have looked on people in the 20s if they didn't wear the correct foundation garments (usually a corset, just not one cut with any waist reduction). When you have a tube shaped dress it really needs a smooth foundation layer to look peak level regardless of the body wearing it. That's like the sole issue I think Rachel has with the fit of some of her dresses since they come from eras which have a lot more to the foundations than we wear nowadays and it can really affect the fit. But for a short project like Rachel does, it would not be possible to create all the correct underpinnings for everything. She'd never get to post a thing. I think she looked awesome in the dress regardless and I was lamenting how she just cut the pattern from the paper and did no adjustments and it was good to go for her. My measurements are all over the place (split between core and plus sizes for patterns which makes the concept of even trying to make anything overwhelming). Like for a no edit pattern made out of backdrop fabric it turned out pretty damn amazing. And the sparkles.... all the sparkles! How can that NOT be flattering?

Ok. Backstory time! When my kids were little, they noticed the light reflecting on the ceiling from my phone screen dancing around and got really excited about it. Being me and having seen an old Peter Pan play on PBS at some point where Tinkerbell was played by a mirror reflecting light onto things, I very quickly decided to convince my children that this light was Tinkerbell. So, little reflections like your new dress puts out are now tinkerbells in our house after many happy years of messing with toddlers' minds until they became teenagers. Backstory time over. I can't help but notice, your dress also happens to be roughly the cut of Disney's Tinkerbell's dress. Therefore! You have made the ultimate Tinkerbell tinkerbell dress! The end.

I wrote this really fast but here's this for everyone: The Disco Girl of Massachusets. The word is that you'll see her on dark nights, just outside the range of a streetlight. A single glint of stray light followed by a cascade of square lights. Then, you behold her - the Disco Girl of Massachusets! No one knows quite where she came from. Legend is that she's a sprite from the creation of disco ball in the 1920s, or an ambitious flapper girl by her style of dress. Other legends claim she was just a party girl from the 1960s, who got lost on her way home. If you manage to spot her before the lights from her dress strike you, she'll beckon to you. If you follow her summons, you'll find yourself led to a speakeasy. Don't worry, she knows the password. Inside, you're in the 1920s. Cigarette smoke is heavy in the air and glasses clink underneath racous laughter. What's that? You're worried you're dressed too modern? Oh, don't worry, they don't see you. The music swells as the live band swings into a new tune. You dance the night away, and awake under the streetlamp. The morning mist clings to you like the smoke last night. You sit up as you catch the last of the Disco Girl disappearing with the morning sun. Was that a glimmer or the sun rising? If you don't see her before she sees you, you're reminded of the hypnotic spin of a disco ball. Your eyes are struck by it, held by it, as she steps closer. She smiles. She disappears in a shower of light. You're left wondering if she was real. A sudden urge to find a loud bar with lots of dancing will strike you. It passes, a fleeting desire. Something is still sparked within you - a desire to be cozy with friends. Don't spend too long searching for the Disco Girl of Massachusets. No one is certain what town she's in. Most sightings happen in the older parts of Boston, on nights of the new moon, when one's heart is most empty. She reportedly doesn't harm anyone and apparently only seeks to promote joy and connection.

I LOVE this dress. You did such a fantastic job. If I saw this in my yard at 3am, I would think a drunk fey got lost on the way home from a party 😂

Full honesty I think this is the single most “trust the process” I’ve ever felt abt a Rachel video (literally since the pinup companion days) and subsequently experienced the highest degree of delight and shock at the result lol Also random tip after years of sticking mirrors to things (including clothes) the best solution I’ve found for sharp edges if you’re not going to embroider them on is to file every single edge with a dremel (with eye promotion, gloves, and a respirator) on very low speed, or by hand on high grit sandpaper. Beyond tedious addition to an already tedious af project but it def makes a useable/lasting garment as far as not mutilating yourself lol

I think we all should do more things that don't "serve a practical purpose" but make us happy... and I love how supportive Nick is to going out and watching you light up the yard. lol

this looks like an iconic 80s dress that many people try to recreate despite all interviews saying it was lethal ❤🔥

I know for a FACT that my black lab would lose her mind chasing those shinies reflected, while I would be absolutely mesmerized because of how pretty it is-

rachel, i love seeing how much you grow. i work at a location of a popular fabric company (ms. jo’s if you will), and i love recommending you. when someone comes in to purchase fabric, patterns- hell, even beads, i let them know that for when i’m working on my projects, i watch you. thank you so much for what you do. been watching you for years, and won’t be stopping anytime soon. i love to see your growth

I love it so much! I remember hearing that we're drawn to shiny things as an evolutionary trait to help us find water sources, so really it's only natural that you'd want to be a walking disco ball.
