Same! Or alternatively, redoing the colour lifter one more time to get an all-over level 6 would have made the henna come out much more orange. Rachel uses the same henna as me (Jamila) which is known for being able to produce beautiful orange-copper penny tones, but if your hair is too dark when you use it, it doesn't go ruby red, it goes brown! My face when she went "meh, light enough, and if not I'll get a nice red fade" 😱😱😭😭

I’m a professional and have a few tips for the future: 1. The hair wasn’t saturated enough with the remover, you needed AT LEAST the double amount if not more. Probably still a second application, but only for the darkest places still left in the hair. With henna especially, you want and even starting point as possible. 2. Going from the first point, Henna doesn’t lift. It will only stay the same level of light or go darker. So it’s a good idea to be one level lighter before Color (when talking henna), so you don’t risk getting too dark. 3. Newly lifted hair sucks pigment more easily, and will appear darker. Keep going with application of pigments, and you end up dark again. Which is what happened here. If you want to go to another hair adventure yourself, without a professional, I highly suggest: Give your hair at least a month of rest with lots of treatments. Do another round of colour remover and a second might be necessary. If a third is needed, I would give it a few days rest and treatments. The goal is to get it as even as possible, so only apply the second or third round the needed places. I would recommend a semi permanent dye or a toner, just for the sake of health for your hair. If henna is still desired, you just need to be slightly lighter than the desired result. I would just give a few days between the colour remover and henna with lots of treatments, so the hair sucks the pigments more evenly. No matter how you desire to colour, just remember you need and even result as possible with the colour remover. It’s the foundation for the next step, and the most important part. Wish you good luck! 🥰

💯 all of this! PLEASE use a demi/semipermanent color if you get back to red and decide to go dark again. It’s so much easier to go lighter again.

As someone who has gone from black to henna red and back multiple multiple times… my recommendation if you want to go back to lighter red is: do the color remover again up to 3 times. Make sure you rinse really well. Then do the henna again. IF after this you are still not at the desired lightness… then do a light bleach bath for 15 minutes. Mix a bit of bleach with shampoo for that. It should not be too hard on your hair.

I actually adored your colour after the colour lifter. As someone with dark hair, I would say your hair now is definitely red rather than brown, just a very dark red. I think washes and sun will lift it naturally over the next few weeks - it looks beautiful all the same. But yeah, dark hair is basically a life commitment unless you’re willing to use bleach. My hairdresser kept asking me over and over before I went dark if I was sure 😂

I have blonde hair. In one fell swoop, I had half of it shaved down to about a cm and the other half long, and all of it was dyed black. After it grew out a bit, I had it all trimmed down to the same length, and someone dyed my roots brought red for me. Lol. Then I let it grow out from there. It's long and blonde once more. (Though I'm ready to chop it off. I'm waiting till spring so I don't freeze over winter)

After dying my hair a darkest blue-black, it took me a 6 hour salon visit and $300 to lighten it to a medium reddish brown. I think they did color lifting without the harsh type of bleaching - hair peeps can say exactly - but my hair survived with very little damage. My profile pic shows my natural color, so I got pretty close. With all the home hair products, time spent, aggravation, and tears, the salon was worth it for me (I could eek that cash out mah butt at the time)! Best luck Rachel!! We're here for ya!

Oh, boy, I did this journey. As a natural redhead, I tried dark hair for a while, and going back to my natural colour... that was ROUGH. I tried colour lifters like this about four times to little avail and finally just ended up bleaching it and then dying it as close to my natural colour as possible so it would match as the roots grew out. Harrowing process.

I had my natural red hair a dark auburn for a few years and got tired of the upkeep. I bought two boxes of color oops (because I have a lot of really thick hair) and applied it, then after waiting the right amount of time, washed my hair like 5-6 time (wash, rinse, apply more shampoo, repeat) in the shower. It got about 90% back to where I needed it to be.

About 10 years back I shaved off my hair. Accidently. You see, I'd been cutting my own hair for years with clippers (hair is curly, it's easier than you think). So, on my first round with what I mistakenly thought were the long combs I took a wavy line through the top of my head. Stood back up after dumping the hair in the sink. And screamed like a girl. And then I laughed harder than I had in years. Shaved the rest of it off. Went to go see Jello Biafra perform at a local bar with Mister Husband... Everybody assumed I was going through chemo. Meh. I was yelling at the beginning, "Follow the instructions and wash your hair!" I've been screwing around with my hair for 24 years, color lifter will lift the dirt as well as the color, so if you have squeaky clean hair, it will only lift color and not dirt. Use two boxes for one application since you have long hair, and do it twice for dark colors. I would give it a couple weeks and let your hair relax, do oil treatments every 5-7 days, that will help the hair and help start pulling the henna out. I'll pray to the All-Hallow gods for you... lol

I say embrace the autumnal hedge witch vibe I'm getting. It's definitely red: Just darker red. I personally adore that color, but sun and washes will likely lift it lighter. IDK if it would work, but I know when I want to remove some Arctic Fox from my hair, I switch my normal wash cycles to head and shoulders (the dandruff shampoo) because that's essentially a clarifying shampoo. IDK if it would work with the henna but it might help with a gradual lift instead of a chemical shock. Either way, thanks for the content. it's been a rough week for me and me and my daughter adore watching you and find your stuff so inspiring. So thank you. Take care of yourself.

I have some tips (I have been to haircoloring/stylist school for a while) -Smaller sections of hair during the coloring/color removing process helps make the results more even toned, use a rattail comp to make the sections and separete them when u go -Use more 2 or 3 box of the hair color remover at a time if you have long hair to coat the whole hair evenly and throughly -Use the color remover on a clean hair -After first color remover is washed and hair dried, you can do the process again and focus the color remover on the ends wher it is darker and leave the roots either for last or completely color remover free, this so the result gets more even, you can do this same process third time on a dry clean hair and focusing on the darkest parts of the hair - After that I would deep condition or use a condition based semi permanent hair dye to get the color you want (like manic panic, arctic fox etc which don´t include developers) these kinds of hair dyes just coats the hair with color and don´t get in the hair follicles so they are safe to use after harsh treatments - Yes the box hair dye as a mistake, and it is because color doesn´t lighten the hair even with a developer, if you want a lighter color u need to remove color, not add to it, this is a common mistake - Mix turmeric powder to your henna mix to get a more orange and lighter result also the lemon is not needed and will dry your hair out -Also last pro tip if you want swicth between ginger and dark brown hair color, I would recommend using conditioner based semi permanent dye (without developer like manic panic, stargazer, arctic foxetc) to get the darker color, again it just coats the hair and doens´t get into the hair follicles so it will easier to remove and get pack to the ginger with color remover Also the video was entertaining and I will watch any and all videos you make, I am here for the vibes lol Hope this helps

As a hair stylist, I just want to throw out there that it isn't always feasible to go get what you want done in a salon. It's expensive as heck, and while we do a lot of school and continuing ed, it's still totally possible to get what you want at home with some research on products and a baseline of common sense. The only thing I would highly suggest to anyone is to try to have someone around to help make sure things are evenly saturated, but even that can be done solo. I am always more than happy to help out my clients with advice for home stuff, from styling to cutting bangs to color, because the stigma of diy hair needs to stop. Most of my own terrible color jobs and cuts came from professionals.

Oo Rachel I feel your pain! The issue is that color does not lift color. So you can put any box dye on the dark parts, it will not get lighter. If I were you I'd go through a couple more color removers, like the one you used. It gets rid of the color buildup, without damaging your hair too much. To get the most out of the color remover, wash your hair with a stripping shampoo (or dish soap) and dry it, no conditioner. The more open your hair cuticle is, the easier the remover can get the c out. Then when it's orangey, put the henna over it again. You can do it!!

Colour removers have to be used >exactly< as the instruction on the box says, the hair must be fully saturated, and they also have to be rinsed out >forever< (like 10 mins + literally) afterwards with warm water. The way it works is that, depending on the remover, it either temporarily "shrinks" or "pushes out" artificial pigments from the hair. If the pigment is then not washed out of the hair properly it is going to oxidize and become dark (or spotty like in your case) again. The instructions usually fail to mention that, sadly. Usually you'd see the hair turning lighter all over before washing though, so I'd guess that either the 20 mins wasn't enough or the colour remover is just not the best. On a more cheerful note, it it goes wrong again you can always do an orange buzz and become a true pumpkin girl :) Also your current reddish brown also looks very autumny and pretty!

That turned out a gorgeous dark red, at least on camera. You remind me SO much of Anne of Green Gables - but at least you didn't manage to dye your hair green at any point during this adventure; I was half afraid that you would! It'll grow out, given time, and fade - it happens, embrace it (you can always wear your hair up or experiment with 1940s style hair scarves - though that might be more a UK WWII thing than a US thing? I don't know.) It's always lovely to see a video from you, whether or not the thing you set out to do worked, there's something about your brand of cheerful chaos that speaks to my soul, though I'm not as fearless as you at deciding to Do The Thing and going for it. Rachel, as a retired hairdresser I would like to caution you about the use of multiple products back to back...you can easily burn your scalp , blisters even, cause major breakage and lose hair . So please go gently, gently ! Wait a week at least before adding more chemicals and use hair moisturizer to sooth your scalp and hair. The lifter has weakened the color bond so if you just wait a few weeks you will see that the color will lighten over time . Continue to use hair conditioner and take pictures of your mistep to remind yourself that you "tried it ,didn't like it"! Push comes to shove a simple hair cut will repair some bits AND hair grows every day.👍 😄Its what keeps hairdressers employed ! 😄

I go from black to white every Summer so I can do fun colors in my hair. I have learned a lot and I will share. The color lifter worked really well but it was patchy. There were dark spots of the black left. I can't remember if they mention it on the box but it works better (like way better) when it is warm. Even air conditioning will make it so that it does not work very well. That's why the top and the hair close to your scalp was red. The ends of your hair were still a bit dark because they needed heat. I wrap my hair in plastic and then put one of those heated caps for deep conditioning on while it processes, about 20 minutes. It gets the shade of red you want with no dark spots nearly every time. If you have some darker spots you just do it again. Also, you need to use more than one box for the length of your hair as well. If I had your length I would buy 3. No henna needed. Good luck!

Her roots are light because she's a natural blonde. Not because the colour remover worked better closer to the scalp. And she did wrap it in plastic and a shower cap when she did all her hair. That said I thoroughly agree she did it incorrectly. Multiple boxes, squeaky clean hair and another round on the patches she missed from sectioning poorly. Would have gone much better. I'm also a fan of colour remover because it's so much gentler than bleach

hey rachel! i've been through this process before of trying to go back to red from a dark color. your hair is probably reoxidizing, meaning you didn't get all the dye out the first time you stripped your color from the molecule. i would suggest using the color remover 2 to 3 times and making sure you spend at least 30 minutes in the shower with a clarifying shampoo. i think if you tried it all again, you could get way better results.

"Piling on top of eachother" is exactly where it's at 😂 Some tips for my DIY homies: - if you want to go darker than what you're currently rocking, there's very little risk to mess it up, box dye or henna will cover up lighter shades, no prep needed - if you want to go lighter (dark to blonde) or brighter (dark to red/auburn), you need to remove pigment first; so either you use lifter to remove artificial pigment (may require a few applications if you have dyed your hair a couple of times) or if you have virgin hair you need to bleach it first (volume 20 is enough to lift 2-3 levels without damaging your hair too much). Hope this is helpful to someone somewhere! ✌️ Edit: If you want to dabble in some darker colours, but you know you will eventually want to revert to the previous lighter colour, don't use dye. Instead look for colouring shampoos/hair masks etc, as those will wash out in 8-12 washes and if you don't wash your hair too often you can get some mileage out of them

I repeat this process if dry ingredients and warm water until the consistency if greek yogurt. NOW STOP! Cover your bowl and let sit over night. In the morning stir again, the lumps should largely have dissolved overnight. Apply as usual.

@@lexmarie3248 That won't happen if you use henna dye that's 100% henna. Cheap, low quality henna dyes contain metallic salts and that is what reacts to the bleach and can cause your hair to melt, not the henna itself. I used to always bleach my roots before adding henna and would always pull the bleach down over the henna to blend it. When multiple applications made my ends darker than I wanted I would bleach my whole head. Never had my hair melt cause I used 100% henna. Rachel, you did a good job! When you use those sulfur based (that's why it smells like that haha) color removers there's a chance the pigment can come back. That's why it got darker when you put the copper boxed color on it. I'd skip that step and just do a bleach bath. Powder hair lightener (bleach) mixed with 20 vol developer according to the directions on the package, then add about equal amount of shampoo. The shampoo helps make it easier to distribute evenly and dilutes the bleach a bit. Apply to dry hair, some say wet but I find it works better on dry. Avoid your roots since they are already lighter. Leave it on for about 15 min, you will be able to see if all the dark is gone and if it's not light enough keep checking every 5 min up to 30 min total. Then rinse and shampoo/condition.Your hair should be close to what it was before. This can be repeated if its not light enough, I'd wait a week or so before doing it again. Then go in with your henna. After get some Olaplex #3 and use it before you wash and deep condition after you shampoo. Since you set your hair and don't use much heat on it it should be fine. I'm a Hairdresser and have done this many times to my own hair. I recently went from the red you had before to darkest brown/black then back to a light brown haha. The only time its very hard to remove dark color is when you want to go blonde. The warm tones are hard to get out but since your goal is a bright copper you don't have to worry about that. Also the "boxed color is the worst thing ever" is a myth similar to henna, they used to be made with metallic salts. But now most brands are owned by companies that make Salon products... L'oreal, Revlon, Clairol etc. So they are similar formulas to salon color but they are commonly used incorrectly which can lead more work to remove so I think that's why most stylists still say not to use them.

I love the crap out of this comment. I would add that box dyes do have the draw back of often using a higher volume developer than needed, which can cause some unnecessary damage. Hairdresser here… Smaller sections are always better for even application. A color brush is nice to work the product into your roots but even hairdressers use their hands to work the product into the ends. The brush also has a pointed tip on the handle you can use to part and section your hair. You can get a bowl and brush for like $5 on amazon. Going lighter from dark is not an easy process. You have to lighten the brown parts ONLY and then apply the final red. If you put lightener on your roots it’s going to give you hot roots. This is a color correction and if you want it more copper red I suggest going to a salon and paying someone to get you back to red and then you can maintain it going forward. Henna adds more complications to this process and getting professional help will be worth it. You also probably need a trim and a deep conditioner after allllll that. Good luck!

The problem you really had was you didn’t lift out all the old box color so you were just adding pigment on top of pigment, hence the darkening color. (Which you figured out pretty quick I think 😂) Color remover is a form of lightener, just less strong, so it can lift out the box but not the henna. You should give it another go later! Just remember that unless you can get all the color out, the henna will just look dark. Good luck!!! 👍🏻

Going back to the ginger I love was a *journey.* I recommend trying the lightener a few times, letting your hair chill for a week and then dying the red. Keep up with the red as usual and it will eventually go back to that color you love! Sorry this didn't work out the way you wanted but your viewers love your content no matter what!

I feel this so much. I had lagoon blue hair and then wanted to go emerald green. Didn't lift and tone enough so my bleached hair was really yellowy. Yellow-y blonde + emerald green=swamp witch green. It's the risk we run when playing with hair chemicals. Your hair is an amazing color though, intended tone or not. All the falls colors suit you.

I'm no hairdresser, but I've been around for 63 years, and I've had lots of hair mistakes, so I'd like to suggest using a lemon based dishwashing liquid just for the next few washes. It will strip out some of the color, and you'll have to do some intense conditioning afterwards, but it never failed to strip the color from my hair. Give your hair some time and several washes before you apply anything else to it. You're beautiful no matter what color your hair is.

I've gone through my onw home dyeing jobs and I have to say, I never had your sense of humour about it! I know the final result wasn't what you were going for, but IMHO, I think it's the most flattering colour you've ever had. Yes, the vibrant red and the very dark both looked really good, but this colour looks great on you. It really brings out your eyes and your skin tone. You'll have to put up with looking gorgeous for now.

I never wanted to be a redhead (natural dark brown, at least before I started greying) but I did find a purple that is meant to go on dark hair without needing to bleach it. Also found a blue that does really well on dark hair too, unfortunately two different brands!! (Garnier Nutrisse Deep Lilac and Ice Cream's blue). But one does what one must to get fun streaks and also avoid bleaching one's nice dark hair (I've done blonde streaks a few times and it takes multiple times with the bleach stuff to get it past orange, stopped bothering with it though because the really fun Manic Panic colours don't dye my hair, like, at all)

The cut to you saying "I don't want to talk about it" on your 2nd attempt at henna really made me laugh. I haven't used boxed dye in years, the last time I did I underestimated how long it would last. I assumed it would fade in a few months and I'd be back to my natural dirty blonde/light brown (I dyed my hair jet black) but I ended up having to let my hair grow until I could cut it out 😂

I used to henna my hair for years and absolutely loved it! At the age of 60 I decided to go "factory original". So, I just stopped the henna and let my very silver roots grow out. Once they were long enough, I chopped off all the red, then grew out my hair. Regarding your hair, you may want to go to a stylist to get it lightened before trying to henna again. Btw, I'm 68 now and have long silver hair. Much as I miss the henna, I really don't want to have to grow out the roots and chop my hair short if I change my mind again.

I have dark brown hair, the same color as Rachel's before look, and I used to use henna to give my hair a red tint. It actually made my hair look almost a shade lighter, and the red was so cool and fiery when backlit. I quit when the number of grey hairs tripled on my head. I only had six grays to start with for the longest time, but it really freaked me out when I suddenly had more. I have long hair and do not want to have to cut it off to get rid of hennaed ends. I was so convinced that my hair was going to go gray rapidly once the grays multiplied, but three years later I still haven't sprouted anymore. My hair is still just it's natural color and I'm done messing with it.

Girl, I am an hairdresser. Unfortunately I think you need to use bleach… 20 Volume developer will be okay, it don’t have to be much stronger because you don’t have to lift to blonde. Then you can apply the copper box dye or henna, but your hair needs to reach the right level before put anything on it 😊

I agree the bleach is probably the only way. I have been using henna since 2012 and recently discovered that I can have highlights by the bleaching process though since I did highlights I went to a salon but I imagine those bleach kits would work for all over color fixing. Though I will say my hair is naturally blonde with red tendencies and I haven’t used any chemical dye since switching to henna except for the bleached highlights.

As someone who has used colour remover many a times here are a few tipps: You need to really saturate your hair in it. I mean drippin wet. Like with bleach it needs to thoroughly coat each strand of hair. I would also recommend to repeat the colour removing step twice, if you have been dying your hair a long time to get the buildup out of there. I hope this helps for future hair dying adventures ♥

I dyed my (naturally mid brown) hair black when I was 18. When it was growing out I wanted some way to transition it and spent 4 hours in the salon to get streaks bleached into it so I could dye them red while I was growing the black out (didn't even try to lighten it...good thing considering the rest of the story.) So the hairdresser bleached the streaks and put the red on, and my 4 inch roots took the red fine of course, but the streaks refused to take any color at all and stayed blond. So I had black hair with red roots and blond streaks. For like a year people would look at me and go "what color is your hair???" and I would say "lots." It's much easier now that I have chin length hair cause I just wait and cut it off when I'm making drastic change.

As a hair dresser imma review your process constructively :3 1) color remover instead of straight to bleach: usually a very good choice, it normally won't do as much damage right away. 2)test strand: perfect! Love to see it! 3)reading instructions: ahead of many others! 4)the smell and fumes: windows but if it's hot yknow it can't be helped 5)application: you don't need the brush, but smaller sections make saturation easier on ya :3 6)saturation: you wanna use more than you think you need but you did great keeping the moisture in! 7)henna: haven't experienced myself yet but hear it's easier on the hair so... lovely! 8)application2: shows consistency in your technique and attention to saturation. Very well done! 9) saturation: when it looks good on camera it's usually good, so, awesome! Overall 10/10 as long as you had fun along the way :3

I'm old, and I can say that I did this with my hair a few times. It's insanity, but each time I did stuff like this, I still told myself that the outcome would be different. It never was. One time my hair was black, one time it was red like a fire engine, and one time it was brown with a lovely green that made you think of something you find in the diaper of a baby. So watching you made me feel compassion and serenity, knowing that most of us do stupid shit like this with our hair.

Rachel, I was in the exact same situation as you! I have henna red hair and wanted to go dark brown with a semi-permanent dye. Love both colors! And I also used a color remover, then (very important) deep cleansing shampoo. Then didn't touch my hair for a week to see if it gets back to dark. Thankfully it didn't! Then I dyed my hair with henna. The ends of my hair looked still darker than my roots. After a few months I bleached the lower part of my hair (without touching the roots) and it was magical. My hair became such a beautiful red! I actually have never used red box dye. I guess that step was a mistake. Because in most cases your hair will become dark after that. Well, now you know... One day, sooner or later, you will get back to red.🧡

THANK YOU for having had the 'courage' to post this because I had been thinking something along the same lines. I don't presume to know Rachel's "real-life" financial situation, but was it really out of the question for her to have spent a couple of hundred bucks(?) on going to a professional salon to have her hair stripped and re-colored to the exact shade she wanted? There would've been no shame in having said, "I spent $___ and, yes, that is a lot of money, but I knew it would be worth the investment."

I’m a hairdresser so my advice is leave it alone and wash it frequently with hot water to pull out the color. Also cheap dollar store shampoo works great at pulling out color. But honestly you’ll need to use bleach to lift it. If you want to do it at home use bleach with 20 volume developer with shampoo and let it sit for 20 minutes at a time and wash it out
@Glesga_lassie
@Glesga_lassie 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't touch freshly applied henna with bleach as a home job, also a hairdresser. If it goes wrong it will cost more to colour correct than if Rachel had gone to a salon initially. And there's a high chance it would be patchy and yes, it will go shades of orange, red etc but there's no guarantee it will lift in an acceptable way. Henna is a pain to deal with as a stylist, but for someone with very long hair that's been through multiple processes I wouldn't recommend a home job unless they're willing to spend a lot of money to correct it, or cut a lot of the length off.
