Kat Momo I think it’s more of why buy something just to destroy it you know? Like that’s time effort and money and resources that went into it. By destroying something without even getting a use out of it you’re basically just wasting resources and that’s not very good for the environment.

Suicidal Nematode well i don’t really think she bought the book just to criticize it. she went in with no opinion, since she hasn’t read anything else from gabbie, and when she finished the book, she had an opinion and decided to share it. she shared it in such a polite and nice way too she was very supportive and showed ways to better the poetry

@TotosTales5 жыл бұрын
Actually that is a lot more appealing than anything she wrote - it’s simple yet funny, even removed from the mocking of Gabbie, it can be interpreted as a mockery of a certain subsection of society. Essentially you’ve managed to create two layers in three sentences which is a lot more than Gabbie ever did
@TotosTales5 жыл бұрын
Genuinely if you flip the first two lines you even get a proper rhythm. “Dogs Bark Trees have bark I am one with nature” Also as the person above pointed out it is reminiscent of a playground rhyme, which combined with its simplicity, if it is taken as a criticism of a subculture if society would imply that that subculture isn’t very smart and relies on 8th grade intellectualism. So layer one: a funny short poem of someone say in the park Layer two: a comment on egocentric subculture being simple, vapid and self important Layer three: One could argue that you are saying that to enjoy nature one must too regress to a simplistic childlike state, although I am not sure I could write a super convincing argument on that... I’m sorry, I just really enjoyed those three lines, they’re genuinely quite good imo. Yes I realize this is ridiculous

I thought it was disgusting for her to equate issues such as self-harm to nothing more than a cheap punchline about changing your hairstyle. People struggle with that for many different reasons and it comes in many different forms, some people use drinking alcohol as a way and means of that, and some use other methods. You weren't being overly sensitive, she's a terrible advocate for mental health. Her whole poems were basically her wishing she was dead, because if it wasn't self-harm she was trivialising, she would go one step up and trivialise other issues such as suicidal ideation.

it's also really incredible how she never has any trigger warnings? i was never really a gabbie fan, i just never followed her, but there was that one time when the Internet was blowing up about 'monster' so i checked it out and the end had some other her committing suicide which i was in no way ready for and she didn't warn about anywhere. in 'cut' it's the same, we are lead to believe that this is a poem about a very serious issue that, unfortunately, a lot of people struggle with, and she doesn't warn us that, "hey, this could be upsetting", instead she makes it into a joke. the "permanent solution to a temporary feeling" or whatever the line was can't even be applied to a hair cut, because as she says herself, "hair grows back". she seems really insensitive to anyone struggling with mental illness in any way

Something I've noticed about Gabbie is that she's very fake deep. She's always talking about how deep her music is and there's so many underlying messages but her lyrics are all straight to the point and obvious, any meaning she does try to add seems so forced. I think this is a big reason why she chose to do a poetry book. Poetry's main point is to carry a message through your words and she chose to write poetry to seem deep. Her poems in reality aren't crafted to have a deep underlying meaning that you wouldn't realize until you've reread it tons of times, it's very straight to the point like you had said.

I like sleep! Sleep is neat! Cause when I dream, Nothing is quite what it seems, The huntsman's biting, human axe, The princess's final gasp, To disappear and sadly weep, Lost to that eternal sleep. I like sleep! Sleep is neat! Wow, I didn’t realize how bad her poetry was until now lol as someone who also struggles with self harm, the “cut” poem does feel very insensitive and demeaning in a way, but something that I find interesting is that Gabbie has talked about it being very hard for her to cut her hair, since she’s used it almost as a security blanket her whole life or as a thing to hide behind. So perhaps she’s trying to draw a parallel between the pain of cutting her hair and the trauma of self harm? Which i think is uhhh,,, sorta yikess

But she's not worth it, you'll probably experience more people like her, but she isn't worth relapsing over. You are stronger then her words. It’s about gossip, and how words get twisted after people all add their piece to the truth. all poetry should have meaning. That’s why poetry is special.

Yes -- Shel Silverstein wrote MUCH better poetry than this, as do Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear and others. There are some excellent poets whose work is directed to children. In contrast, I can't helping thinking that the Hanna poem about sleep is of similar awfulness (as far as structure, rhyme, meter, etc., _not_ content) to some of the "verses" in Ken Ham's kids' books. Her poem “sticks” was actually quite nice until the last four lines. Completely ruined it and made it angsty self hatred, which is a common thing she likes to shove in literally anything she writes. There’s lots of problems with her writing, but specifically the angsty, edgy extreme grasp at attention that’s plaguing her work is seriously dragging her down. Mental illness is not a trend, and the attempt she’s making at making a statement to relate to youth is.. sad. It’s an obvious lack of connection to society due to her other problematic behaviors, and maybe someday when she works at her issues she may find writing to be more kind to her.
@suffering_soup5 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. Literally every single Gabbie piece in this video was just absolutely drenched in edge and self-hatred and angst. It’s so overwhelming and wayy over done, and although I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having an angsty poem, hers just are not even a little bit subtle or elegant. Her writing sounds like an edgy teen dumping their feelings on tumblr, not an adult trying to tell a dark story through art. And there’s just nothing considerate about any of them, especially that last one about cutting hair. She’s so aggressive about the depression theme and it just makes it all sound like a joke. It’s very frustrating to read, I think especially as someone who has been surrounded by these very serious issues their whole life.
@woowieghost5 жыл бұрын
I agree, out of all the poems she read out in this video by Gabbie I quite liked Sticks until the obvious twist and sudden change in rhyme structure that completely distrupted the flow of the poem. Slightly off-topic, but...as someone who has been writing poetry since I was a child and loves it so deeply that I studied it in college, I’ve been saddened to learn that many writing programs I participated in as an undergrad fell by the wayside either due to lack of interest and/or funding (including the graduate program I had my eye on). So I want to express that I really, really appreciate your clear love for poetry as a medium, Rachel! It’s especially encouraging to me to hear that you don’t consider yourself a writer and still have a deep appreciation of the craft. Usually the only other people I’ve met who were interested in poetry were other writers. Hearing you talk about your love for poetry gives me a lot of hope, because I also feel that it’s an art form with so much room for creativity. Thank you

Hi! I don't know if this means anything to you, but I study Russian at the uni and poetry has always been a very popular genre in the russian litterature. I'm very saddened by what you said, the fact that people don't seem to be interested in poetry anymore. But where I live (French speaking part of Switzerland) it is fairly popular. Same goes for Germany. So don't lose hope, it'll come back! It's just the 'circle of interest' I guess, maybe in 10 years poetry will be more popular where you live. Thank you for your attention ahaha, I'd be very interested to read something you wrote. And if you'd like to know some awesone french (or russian) poets let me know :)

Anyways, you can read some of my work at @blackholetulip on Instagram :) you can also send me the list of poets there if that's easier for you. She's not good at writing poetry because she doesn't write poetry. That's the thing I don't understand with KZbinrs; sure they have a massive following of people who will consume this thing they create (poetry books, music, makeup, Lily Sing's talkshow, etc) and thing and tell them they're great, but that doesn't change the fact that they picked up a random thing and decided to do it regardless of skill or lack of training. She has a psych degree, not English. She isn't a writer. Why publish an entire book of poetry when you AREN'T a poet? People write for years before getting published for a reason. We all suck at first. One of the most common pieces of advice in writing is that you gotta kill your darlings and accept that the first book you write is likely terrible. You pay your dues and keep at it until it gets better, something she's starting to do with her music. But when you write your first book and publish on the first try because of a media following and not your work, it's gonna be rough. Not to say people can't learn new things, but like...walk before you run, which seems to be something she struggles with more than the average KZbinr (which is saying something)
