I think so too - I'm the opposite of most people though - watercolor works better for me than acrylic or oil!

I'm so glad I saw this before having a 3rd go my next painting (the 1st 2 were a disaster lol). I use glazing on my paintings but the one I'm starting is of a rooster and had never used naphthol red, until this painting. I'm going to try the yellow underneath this time even though the red in the 1st 2 were ok but seemed like there was something missing. The disasters in the 1st 2 were of something else. 🤦

I'm so glad! I use glazes in almost every painting. The opposite of using a lot of glazes is Alla Prima painting, where you paint everything in one go with one layer - Charles Reid paints a lot of Alla Prima for example

The thing that makes a good watercolor paper is it must be 100% cotton. A second thing is how it is seized. Arches is considered THE best watercolor paper, but it is crazy expensive. There are other very good brands of watercolor paper that are more affordable, like Baohong. Kristy Rice has an excellent KZbin video out where she compares different brands of watercolor paper by testing for various attributes, like whether or not the paper pills, how it receives and distributes pigment, and how a company's seizing affects the painting process. The easiest thing to remember, though, when it comes to buying watercolor paper is always remember to buy 100% cotton paper.

I have issues with my underpainting bleeding or lifting up when I glaze over it. Maybe that's normal? I keep wondering if it's because if my paints (which are largely Cotman, at least for the basic colors), or if I have a bad technique. This happens even if I come back to it days later, so the paper is definitely dry! I still consider myself a newbie, since I haven't practiced as much as I should have over the years, but the glazing thing is a constant source of frustration!
