As soon as the video started, I thought of Charles Reid! I am attempting a sketch of coneflowers prior to the viewing, as I am not much of a flower painter. I would love to see this technique applied with a darker background. Another great KZbinr, Nina Volk, stresses the importance of having your mid values connect the elements. She does landscapes, but I need to apply that principle to other subjects. Deciding what to do with each edge is so tough for me.

Blurred edges are in less important areas and shadows, in general, and hard edges stay in the main area of interest.

Hi Rachel! I saw a couple of your recent videos about Charles Reid and edges. Fascinating. I don't have a lot of confidence, but I am very excited about this dreamy effect, and will try it!

Thank you Rachel, for demonstrating the "dreamy" effect! And for the tip of using hot press. No wonder I'm having a hard time achieving that effect. I'm using cold press!

OMG! This just blew my mind. I have been watching many KZbin video tutorials on this painting technique, but no one has ever explained it like you did in this video. I really like how you managed to balance the loose quality with the structure of the subject When it's too loose, the painting becomes vague and when it's too structured, the painting looks tight. I'm having difficulty with keeping my paintings loose because I'm too scared of losing my edges and making my paintings look vague, but you just solved my most difficult problem. Thank you a gazillion times!❤
